As someone who lives, and grew up, in Latin America, I'm no stranger to casual comments of racism and homophobia. It's sadly ingrained in our culture. In my experience, it's usually not malicious but coming from a place of genuine ignorance. I believe the first step in challenging their beliefs is for them to get to know the communities outside of their own. I've had friends tell me "I had a completely different idea about the LGBT community before I met you!" They're great people with not so great influences around them growing up. So I think the starting point to inclusion and diversity is just saying 'hi'.

In order to be aware of diversity you need to get to know the differences. Through workshops and club meetings students can get to know different backrounds and communities.
