Resource talk:How to create diversity and inclusion awareness on campus
I think its really important that every campus can count with a safe space to talk about diversity and inclusion, if we know our environment reality, together we can work to make it a better one.
The idea of doing "Tunnel"s is a really effective way in order to show what people feeling outside of the circle feel like, check out the 3 min video on the resource page!
More open minds
This is a great topic and in my opinion, we do way too less in Europe. Everybody should feel comfortable at University (and in everyday life), so we should start to see the world more openminded. This is a very good guide how to start and if we start to follow those steps, then we can change the atmosphere on campus and get everybody to feel completely welcome.
The Full Picture
Diversity and inclusion can sometimes be limited to subsections of it ie race, and gender. So many other facets of our identities have to be acknowledged, especially in education spaces, as these affect our experiences and access to it. My university has been having conversations that take the 'big picture' into consideration for institutional policies and this holistic approach, using the tips given, needs to be brought to the social level of the campus.
Starting With Hello
As someone who lives, and grew up, in Latin America, I'm no stranger to casual comments of racism and homophobia. It's sadly ingrained in our culture. In my experience, it's usually not malicious but coming from a place of genuine ignorance. I believe the first step in challenging their beliefs is for them to get to know the communities outside of their own. I've had friends tell me "I had a completely different idea about the LGBT community before I met you!" They're great people with not so great influences around them growing up. So I think the starting point to inclusion and diversity is just saying 'hi'.
Make information available
In order to be aware of diversity you need to get to know the differences. Through workshops and club meetings students can get to know different backrounds and communities.
