Bio
Sophia Raab aspires to take her aptitude for math, her dream of becoming an engineer, and her passion for pottery to design products that can make the world a better place. She is a rising Sophomore at Grand Valley State University, majoring in Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering with minors in Mathematics and Studio Art: Sculpture. One of her goals is to join the outdoor products workforce. Another is to travel more internationally, to more distant countries and cultures.
Sophia grew up in the California Bay Area, and recently moved to the Mountain West. As a student in Michigan, she appreciates the regional diversity, and hopes it has made her a better listener and keener observer. Her many years selling Girl Scout products laid a strong foundation to develop professional communication skills knowing how important they are for life, and especially a career in engineering. Challenging circumstances during high school, from an athletic concussion, multiple therapies during recovery, and an abbreviated stay in a Colorado boarding school before COVID, created what seemed like a never-ending period of instability. Her experiences helped her gain greater empathy for those who struggle, as well as deeper, more personal insights.
