Biography - Shalin Jyotishi


Shalin Jyotishi is Senior Advisor for Education, Labor, and the Future of Work at New America. He is a Forbes Contributor covering workforce and education innovation.


Jyotishi's mission and expertise are in designing cross-sectoral research, strategy, and policy innovations to build a better and fairer future of learning and work for all. Jyotishi founded and leads New America’s Initiative on Future of Work and the Innovation Economy and contributes to research, storytelling, and policy analysis relating to community colleges, workforce development, labor markets, and credentials.


A seasoned industry analyst, Jyotishi's insights on higher education, work and workers, technological innovation, policy, and their intersections have appeared in NPR, Washington Post, Politico, Financial Times, U.S. News and World Report, InsideHigherEd, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. He has delivered 350+ speaking engagements on high-level stages including for the United Nations, Davos, OECD, and U.S. National Academies.


Jyotishi has extensive board leadership experience including for the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Convergence Accelerator, MIT Science Policy Review, the UN International Telecommunications Union, the International Economic Development Council, George Washington University’s Institute for Public Policy, Georgetown University’s Center on Security and Emerging Technology, and Arizona State University's Future of Being Human Initiative.


Previously, Jyotishi served as the first civil society in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at the World Economic Forum where he led research on AI, job quality, and work augmentation. He oversaw labor economics research at the Burning Glass Institute and served as Program Director at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, North America’s oldest presidential higher education association, where he supported university executives with strategic planning and implementation in economic and workforce development, entrepreneurship, and R&D innovation ecosystem building.


Jyotishi's roots are in science, technology & innovation policy. He served as CEO and Managing Publisher of the internationally acclaimed Journal of Science Policy and Governance, and as Visiting Scholar in Science Policy at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science society, where he co-authored a textbook on U.S. science and technology policy (Forthcoming MIT Press 2024). He held science and innovation policy positions at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, University of Michigan, and founded a consulting practice serving global non-profits and philanthropies.
