He previously served as a research assistant at the Neuroscience Institute at Georgia State University, as well as at the UGA Institute of Higher Education where he worked on an NSF-funded Science of Science & Innovation Policy grant studying the networks of university trustees of AAU institutions and their relationships to private firms. He contributed several articles for an upcoming textbook on stem cell technologies focusing on regenerative medicine. Shalin developed a better understanding of the university’s role in driving economic development when he interned with the Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness and Economic Prosperity(CICEP) at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities(APLU) and through his current internships with the UGA Technology Commercialization Office and the Athens-Clarke County Office of Economic Development. Shalin serves as Advancement Associate for the </span>[http://www.sciencepolicyjournal.org/ <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">Journal of Science Policy & Governance</span>]<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">, a 501-c3 non-profit organization and electronic, open-access research journal aimed at publishing high quality articles on a variety of science and technology policy topics</span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">and</span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">recently assisted authors Tobin L. Smith, Homer A. Neal and Jennifer B. McCormick in outreach and promotion efforts for the latest latest release of their book </span>[http://sciencepolicy.us/ <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">Beyond Sputnik: U.S. Science Policy in the 21st Century</span>]<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">. Outside of science policy, Shalin is active with the University Economic Development Association and with the International Economic Development Council where he is developing strategies to connect students with university-led economic development. Passionate about student engagement, Shalin has served as a founder or co-founder of a total of six student organizations and two honors societies during his four years as a student.
