Introduction

Wayne State was founded in 1868, consists of 13 schools and colleges offering 370 programs to nearly 28,000 graduate and undergraduate students. It is currently Michigan's fourth-largest university and one of the 100 largest universities in the United States.

The WSU main campus encompasses 203 acres linking more than 100 education and research buildings in the heart of Detroit. It also has six extension centers in the metro Detroit area providing access to a limited selection of courses. The institution is a notable engine in metro Detroit's educational, cultural and economic landscape, as manifested through efforts such as its thriving research and technology park and hosting of the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival.

Wayne State is committed to supporting the growth of startups and improve the innovation and entrepreneur culture with students involved as one of VentureWell’s University Innovation Fellows. WSU offers plenty of resources and support through the various departments, the goal of this wiki is to list the current ways a student can get help growing their startup.

Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Edge Certificate Program

The EDGE certificate program will identify, mold and mentor engineering students interested in considering a career as an entrepreneur and provide them the skills necessary to channel creative innovation into ventures that add value. This certificate program exposes and trains engineering students in the entrepreneurial skills required to commercialize new ideas, technologies and products. The EDGE allows students to take courses in entrepreneurial marketing, finance, law and management in combination with the traditional engineering courses in their major. Students also have the opportunity to put their learning into action by way of an entrepreneurial Capstone project in their field of study.

WSU Entrepreneur's Network provides a forum to:

  1. Discuss the dynamics of spin-out company formation based on WSU innovations;
  2. Interact with role models and professional resources for faculty who want to explore starting a company without leaving the university; and
  3. Identify opportunities to serve on technical advisory boards for new ventures

Wayne State Technology Commercialization

Wayne State Technology Commercialization (TC) is responsible for the identification, protection, marketing and licensing of intellectual property (e.g., patents, unique biological or other materials, and certain copyrights) developed by WSU faculty, staff and students. The TC Office promotes an entrepreneurial culture and supports start-up ventures and regional economic development.  TC also negotiates Material Transfer Agreements and Confidentiality Agreements and reviews the Intellectual Property terms of Sponsored Research Agreements.

The goal of Technology Commercialization is to comprehensively manage and aggressively pursue technology transfer activities to support the faculty and the university in translating innovative ideas from the university to the marketplace.

Entreprenurship Atmosphere

We currently rate WSU as a 9 out of 10 because of the amount of students interested in startups, however the university could greatly improve the visibility of the available resources for students as well as improve their Intellectual Property Policies. Also the number of student run organizations isn't much though we see that being fixed by 2016.
