Alex Plazas is a University Innovation Fellow and student at the University of Alabama Birmingham studying Biomedical Engineering. He is originally

from Columbus, Georgia, and graduated from Columbus High School in 2016. After completing his undergraduate degree, he plans on attending a masters program in Biomedical Engineering and working in medical research and development. 


Alex is involved in many innovative and exciting projects happening on campus. He is part of a team developing a low-cost solution to simulate capillary refill action for use in medical simulations. He also interns as a graphic designer for a local IT infrastructure startup, creating website mockups and content. As a member of USGA, Alex also helps in planning student outreach events and discussion panels to inform students of what’s happening on their campus. 


Previously, Alex has been a debate coach for a local high school team consisting of students from across the city of Birmingham. He also was a captain of the UAB Mock Trial team, winning an All-Region Attorney award, and helping his team earn a bid to the AMTA National Championship.



Alex’s free time consists of hanging out at the UAB Makerspace, playing or watching sports, gaming, and playing the Ukulele.
