About Me
I am a Sophomore at Berea College with a major in English and a double minor in Film Production and Business Administration. In the summer of 2014, I was able to take part in an 8 week program on my campus titled Entrepreneurship for the Public Good where 19 other students and I used the entrepreneurial mindset to promote economic development in Eastern Kentucky (Appalachian Region). We also utilized social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) to help small businesses promote adventure tourism throughout their communities. This was my first imerssion into the concepts of innovation and entrepreuneurship. My biggest challenge being a college student is feeling like my knowledge is being utilized in a way that is promoting some type of change. Throughout the undergraduate level, I see other students feel as though they are bound to quizzes and essays, rather than applying their knowledge throughout the community to create impact.
This is WHY I wanted to become a part of the University Innovation Fellow program so that I could show other students, they too, can be changemakers. Although Berea College is a small, liberal arts school, I know that we have the resources here on campus to promote effective change in curriculm, creation of space, or even Startup weekends. With my background in creative storytelling through design and film, I want to help push the status quo of my campus through my creative eye.
I am currently a Research Associate for the Entreprenuership for the Public Good program where I help compile data for the instructor, as well as create all PR related content for the office. Also, I am a Student Associate at Appalachian Heritage, a literary magazine, where I am the Social Media director, and help manage content through our website and blog while also editing and choosing submissions for our quarterly issues.
I am excited to see where the UIF program will take the Berea College campus, and how I can be a part of this exciting process of innovation.
