This project is important to me and the Human-Centered Design Lab because we have an opportunity to make a larger impact on our community at Medical College of Wisconsin and in our health design community in Wisconsin. This would positively affect our faculty, staff, and students by sharing what human-centered design and design thinking is and how it can be applicable in their work. It would also allow for networking opportunities that might not organically occur between health professions and the design community.

Using this mission, we can offer our community of designers an opportunity to learn and connect with one another. Milwaukee has a strong higher education presence that we can tap into and that would have interest in working on co-developing a project like this.

The long-term goals of this project will be to host an annual or bi-annual gathering to learn from, share new ideas, and network with. This gathering would include programming that includes HCD learning and training, community design planning, and presenters on health design topics. This could lead to a network of health design thinkers that could connect and collaborate more regularly.

Project Name: Health Design Symposium

Project by Faculty Innovation Fellows Candidate Antonina Johnston

Why is this project important to you, your department, & your Fellows?

This project is important to me and the Human-Centered Design Lab because we have an opportunity to make a larger impact on our community at Medical College of Wisconsin and in our health design community in Wisconsin. This would positively affect our faculty, staff, and students by sharing what human-centered design and design thinking is and how it can be applicable in their work. It would also allow for networking opportunities that might not organically occur between health professions and the design community.

A second reason this is important to me is to help solidify the identity of our lab and place in the design community. At times it feels like a silo and I want to meet and collaborate with more people to help create real and big change in our community.

Description

In collaboration with other local institutions, I would like to co-develop a health design symposium. There is a small number of health design labs in the United States, and an even smaller number that focus on medical education and social innovation. Over the last ten months our lab has been dedicated to creating a new mission and vision for the future of our lab. Our mission is to advance the innovation of medical education by empowering change makers through empathy, experimentation, and curiosity. Our programs are designed to challenge the status quo and encourage participants to be open to new perspectives.

Short term goals for this project would be to gather a team of interested collaborators and start ideating on what the needs are of the stakeholders and starting to plan a pilot symposium for Spring 2024.

Stakeholders served

  • Medical College of WI (Faculty, Students, and Staff, MCW Interprofessional Education Program)
  • UW-Milwaukee (Lubar Entrepreneurship Center, Graduate Nursing Program, Other Health Profession Programs, Engineering programs, etc.)
  • Additional Milwaukee Institutions/Programs:
    • Marquette University (707 Hub)
    • Milwaukee School of Engineering - CTSI 500 Stars Program
    • University of Wisconsin Graduate Design Program

Key Milestones

  • December 2023: Create a group of core collaborators on the project
  • March 2024: First pilot (Probably will happen closer to April/May)
  • June 2024: Reflect and Iterate Plan
  • September 2024:Continue planning for next Symposium
  • December 2024: Expand
  • March 2025: Second Pilot

An Innovation Portfolio

I am unsure what this will look like after going through the iterative process, but I hope to offer a symposium design, hcd training modules, and a new network of health designers.
