Bio

Dr. Lena Walton is an Associate Professor and Coordinator for a newly approved Doctor of Philosophy program in Curriculum and Instruction (Ph.D. CUI) at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University. Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Walton has been instrumental in creating programs and opportunities to improve educational programming and projects for learners who are underrepresented in their communities and or in P-12 classrooms. For example, while at the University of the District of Columbia, 2012, Dr. Walton worked with the DC Office of the State Department of Education to redesign and implement training for teachers of GED programs across the District and a master’s program in Adult Education to level up their qualifications as adult literacy professionals. At Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University Dr. Walton conceptualized and worked alongside colleague Dr. Samantha Strachan to request funding from the Alabama legislature to increase the number of minority male teachers in P-12 classrooms in Alabama which was funded in 2020, spearheaded a grant funded transformation of AAMU’s teacher education programs and is currently working alongside colleagues on the state of Alabama funded AAMUTeach project intended to increase the number of science teachers in 6-12 classrooms. Dr. Walton consistently advocates for student success, and faculty professional development. She is keenly interested in mentoring relationships between faculty and students, and for faculty mentoring at all levels of their career.

Honors of the College of Arts and Science 2016, University of the District of Columbia Star Teacher Award 2012, UDC Chapter of NEA Educators Make a difference Award 2010, Theta Sigma Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society award for contributions to Teacher Education Salute to a Great Teacher 2006 awarded for contributions to Development of Reading Across the curriculum Initiative Washington DC Consortium of Universities.
