= Overview =
Founded in 2009 at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering, Design for America (DFA) is an organization based on the idea that people cannot innovate without believing in themselves. This principle defines their motivation behind working on a national level to build a network of students who actively create impact at the local level through team projects. Co-founder Dr. Liz Gerber has researched new ways of learning about human centered design called Extracurricular Design-Based Learning (EDBL). This method engages students, community members and partners to think about our biggest challenges that we face in Education, Health, Economy and Environment. I think the best words that summerize this organization's vision is motivation informed by belief in ability." DFA holds the idea that we must believe in our ability to develop and implement innovation solutions that can address the world's challenges [[File:DesignForAmerica.png]]

The organization's goal is devoted to “fusing collaboration, leadership, and creativity” to create a network of empower students working to solve apply design thinking to large scale social problems . DFA works to accomplish this by establishing “design studios” at college campuses across the country. Then, the studios are provided with the necessary resources to effectively utilize design thinking and make a significant engage in projects that create impact in their community. Design for American student teams survey their local community and assess the challenges people facecommunities. Teams go through all steps “Studio” is a term used by DFA to define a group of the like-minded students that come together to think, design process , and innovate. The studios themselves can look different depending on which university you visit; varying from ideation a designated physical space on campus to viable product developmentsimply available classrooms where students can meet. Student teams are part of studios Currently, or DFA organizations indepentently run by has spread to 37 campuses around the United States, serving 1200+ students on campuses nation wide. Groups The establishment of students come together like any other organization on campus and think each new studio follows the model of problems the original Northwestern studio in their community. They then create teams of 2 order to 3 students to take on different projectspreserve the student-led atmosphere. Again, Design for America believes that every student has utilizes these studios to give young adults the ability experience needed to make an impact be team players, purposeful learners, and through design innovation students can solve problems in the world around themeffective leaders.

{{#Widget:Youtube|id=u7v6mrdC2lQ}}}

The main goal of Design for America is to generate a network of students who actively work to create solve social problems and make an impact in their communities. In order to assess its challenges and complete all steps in the design process from creating ideas to feasible product development, student teams must survey their local communities.
