While studying as a Technology and Applied Design major with a focus on sustainable systems. Serving , Kayla worked in the Berea College Office of Sustainability as the Waste Diversion program Program coordinator and was a member of cohort 14 in the Entrepreneurship for nearly 3 years, she is currently spearheading a research the Public Good (EPG) program under Dr. Peter Hackbert. Recognizing an opportunity to reduce food waste by digitizing the recording and design management process in the college dining hall- Kayla recruited an interdisciplinary team of 15 people students, staff, and faculty dedicated to reducing food influencing student waste behaviors through machine learning and visual nudging. Believing that an innovativeUsing the Innovator's Toolkit to teach Design Thinking to students and staff, entrepreneurial spirit is necessary Kayla led a series of UIF and EPG sponsored workshops to encourage growth and reduce impacts on engage campus with the environmentnew WOMbat system (Waste Operations Management, Kayla hopes behavior altering technology) while gathering insights about consumer preferences in the dining hall. The results of this project enabled students to utilize design thinking have more decision-making power over meal offerings, in addition to better facilitate reducing the creative process time and hassle of properly recording food waste. The experience of being a campus-wide leader in green behavior as an educator, sustainability planner, and cultivate solutions event coordinator empowered Kayla to reach out to the global climate UIF team and encourage a change crisisin meal planning at the annual meetups.</p><p style="text-align: justify">With aspirations of becoming a Biophilic designerThe Spring 2019 SVM was the first ever Zero Waste UIF meetup, and Kayla is deeply inspired by nature and strives a crew of other Fabs worked tirelessly to incorporate holistic methodology into educate the 400+ SVM attendees about composting and recycling during the daily meals. Despite the design challenges of sustainable systems.
