These challenges range for simple to extreme, that must be solved to create a stable and safe life for our children and future generations. It is anticipated that each participating institution will develop its own specific realization of the five components and that students who complete the program successfully will receive a distinction of Grand Challenge Scholar endorsed by their institution and the National Academy of Engineering.</span><br/><br/><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The Grand Challenge Scholar Program has two levels of organization and thus two levels of assessment are needed to ensure consistency with the core principles set forth by the founding committee.</span></span></span> <span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">The <span data-scaytid="2" data-scayt_word="NAE">NAE</span> Committee on Engineering's Grand Challenges has identified 14 areas awaiting engineering solutions in the <span data-scaytid="5" data-scayt_word="21st">21st</span> century.&nbsp;</span></span>  *<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Making solar energy economical<br/></span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Provide energy from fusion</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Develop carbon sequestration methods</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Manage the nitrogen cycle</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Provide access to clean water</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Restore and improve urban infrastructure</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Advance health informatics</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Engineer better medicines<br/></span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Reverse-engineer the brain</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Prevent nuclear terror&nbsp;</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Secure cyberspace</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Enhance virtual reality</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Advanced personalized learning</span></span>*<span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">Engineer the tools of scientific discovery</span></span>  <span style="font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:larger;">One of the 14 areas is engineering better medicine in which you can read the [http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/cms/8996/9129.aspx article] here.
