<div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">It has come to our knowledge that practical courses in our University are lacking real life experience, thus causing desmotivation and an enormous waste of resources and opportunities to really learn. Also, even though volunteering is highly important for the University and many people attend the events, the numbers are not constant.</span></span><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Along this journey we have learnt that watching our ideas in action is essential. Students should be able to try a “prototype” of their life as proffesionals at early stages of their careers, in order to make informed choices along the way.</span></span><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">To accomplish this we propose a new way of doing things, SocialUM: practical jobs implying social work. We would be working on real life projects with real life clients, addressing real world issues. But most importantly, our clients would be NGOs, a different one would be selected based on the type of help we can provide them for each course. Every project would be specific for each career, it would take place in curricular subjects, specially the practical ones, and work would be carried out in teams. </span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Students would not only gain work experience from real situations, but also would be faced with different realities which would help them develop empathy and soft skills. Furthermore, the NGO would end this process with a free and functional service provided by the students and plenty of public exposure. And last but not least, the University would have much better trained students to face the world and accomplish their goals, a respected social committed status and a lot of exposure.</span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">We realize how ambitious this plan is, that is why we decided to start with changing one course: Civil Engineering Lab.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #1:''' Empathize with students and the lab professor. The interviews will be taken care of by all of us. </span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #2:''' Meet with Techo, an NGO that builds houses and roads in poor neighbourhoods in order to work with them. Serrana and Magda would handle this task. </span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #3:''' Make a syllabus of the course. We would handle this task together. </span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #4:''' Talk to our Dean in order to have the idea approved. This task would be handled by all of us.</span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #5:''' Start the marketing and communication strategy to attract people. Rodrigo and Josefina would handle this task.</span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #6:''' Launch the renewed Civil Engineering LAB.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><big>Nowadays, there happens to be global unawareness regarding entrepreneurship matters, especially among students. Since we do not have any face to face encounter with successful entrepreneurs, we aren´t even aware of their existence.</big></span></span>
<span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Nowadays the greater economic activity in Uruguay is based on the development of small and medium enterprises and most of them are born as startups, and this phenomenon requires creativity, teamwork, and many abilities more. That's why we realized that the best way to show them how the process of building a startup is by doing hackathons where students form every university in Uruguay con attend.</span></span>
<div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">In this environment, students will have the opportunity to gather people of different areas of studies, crate an environment to boost creativity and innovation, generate communication and teamwork ties.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">This hackathon will be organized for and by students. There would be divided by commissions and each of them will deal with a different aspect of the planification. It could last two days, and it can be done over the weekend. The subject of the first hackathon would be “what would improve my daily life”, with this challenge, students will be able apply all the knowledge they have in I&E to real and tangible solutions. </span></span></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Prior to this inter-college hackathon, we would to a test version for UM students.</span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #1:''' Interview and look for students that are interested in hackathon, then recruit the ones that are willing to take the responsibility of organizing a project.</span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #2:''' Contact potential benefactors such as I&E centers like Initium.</span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #3:''' After covering all the needs we would present the project to the university authorities. Firstly, we would tell them the results of the interviews and how many students are interested in the activity, secondly, we would show them the list of our potential benefactors and how these are going to help us, finally, we would discuss the potential days the hackathon could be held, where will it take place and what additional resources could the university give us. </span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">'''Step #4:''' We would promote the hackathon through social media, the campus life newsletter. Moreover, we would nail down the deals with the benefactors. We would buy the necessarily material for the challenges and prototype how are we going to arrange the space where the hackathon would take place.</span></span></div><div></div>

===<span style="font-size:large;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-15a44742-e2ae-624f-6683-ebc337148279"><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Strategy One: Create an entrepreneurial club of UM students</span></span></span> ===
<span style="font-size:medium;"><span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Despite there is a center of leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators at the University, we find a weak innovation and entrepreneurship culture among students, especially because the same students go to the workshops and talks, and there are few. Many students don’t know about the existence of Initium or they don’t take advantage of it privileges. So we think that if create an independent entrepreneurial club with UM students, this could change.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">But not any student can get in. It must be something that make this club special. So it would be a pre-selection. The judges (at the beginning would be us: Cecilia, Romina, Matías and Luis) must see an entrepreneurial spirit, and show that they could be an agent of change. Being a member of this club would be also a privilege for the CVs of the members. In the club, the members can work for projects or areas (logistics, communication, fundraising, etc). Then, the same members can reclute students for specific projects. It would count with Initium’s support, but it would be independent, so it must have a director that at the beginning would be probably one of us, or a graduate student. The director can also make recommendation letters for the members which would help in finding a job.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The meetings would take place in ZROOMs (classrooms that already exist in the UM, that is similar to Stanford classrooms) or even better, the Design Thinking Room that we’re also planning to do (see Strategy Six), once a week, the day that all the members agree about.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">- </span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Step #1:</span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Talk to UM authorities and see what type of benefits the group members can have. </span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Romina will handle this task by the end of March.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">- </span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Step #2</span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">: Create a selection commitment who will pick the members of the club by interviews. </span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Romina will handle this task at the beginning of April.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">- </span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Step #3</span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">: Make a communication campaign to invite members to the club. </span><span style="font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Cecilia will handle this task at the middle of April.</span></span></span>
