Overview
The name Universitas Brawijaya (Brawijaya University) was granted by the President of the Republic of Indonesia on July 11, 1961. This name is derived from the title of Kings of Majapahit, a great kingdom in Indonesia from the 12th to 15th centuries. UB transformed into a state university on January 5, 1963, following a Presidential Decree issued earlier in the same year. This date was later promulgated as UB’s anniversary (specifically called Dies Natalies among Indonesian academic society members). UB campus is situated in the city of Malang, East Java, in a strategic location that can easily be reached by public transportations. With trees growing in all corners of the campus and the cool air of Malang, UB indeed is a very fresh campus. As a city of education, Malang has been developing rapidly. This seems to be inseparable from the glory of East Java in the past. Today, UB is one of the leading universities in Indonesia with more than 60,000 students in various degrees ranging from the Diploma Program, Bachelor’s Degree Program, Master’s Degree Program, Doctoral Degree Program, and Medical Specialist Program, in 15 Faculties, 2 faculty-level Programs, 1 Vocational Program, and 1 Postgraduate Program.
Promoting Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Brawijaya University is encouraging the students to develop an entrepreneurial mindset by holding various related activities. One of them is by collaborating with TEDx in creating a program to inspire students. In addition, Brawijaya University also provides encouragement through several courses that lead to innovation and entrepreneurship, those that lead directly to entrepreneurship, and those that indirectly, such as Information Technology Industry Management and Business Communication courses. They also held several workshops such as Management Entrepreneur Days and SDT Brawijaya to increase student's interest in entrepreneurship. The existence of several clubs and competitions in entrepreneurship is also one of the factors that can motivate and train students, so students are expected to train their skills in entrepreneurship.
Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Brawijaya University accommodates students to channel the creative and innovative ideas to develop entrepreneurship by having programs that focus on entrepreneurship such as entrepreneurial students. The faculty is also accommodated with courses that can support students' entrepreneurial skills and abilities. To improve I&E, students who want to explore entrepreneurship will join the entrepreneurial community both at the university and faculty level. In addition, there is a competition to encourage students in entrepreneurship and innovation such as the entrepreneur student program, business plan competition, etc. One of the programs from the Young Entrepreneurs community is Meet in Person for engagement catalyzing the formation of venture teams in the pursuit of specific opportunities. All of this is because of the collaboration between students and faculty
Actively Supporting the University Technology Transfer Function
The functionals of Brawijaya University are occupied by several supporting systems that help to magnify the sharpness of technology-savvy function within the campus. Students are being guided into committing opportunities in technology and business by providing entrepreneurial innovation and incubator agency supported with toolkits by Information and Communication Technology of Brawijaya University rightfully. Courses are always being updated with the latest knowledge and set of skills that’s needed to enhance the student’s capabilities in technology, aligning with the essentials of entrepreneurial skills. Implementations of these are usually testified in the regular competitions that are being held on campus, whether it is to pitch, make a business plan, and prototypes.
Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration
Brawijaya University has some requirements so that students can graduate, one of them is completing internship courses. In this course, students are expected to have work experience in an industry, so that they are equipped to face real-world problems in the future. Furthermore, Brawijaya University actively participates in the "Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka" program organized by the Indonesian government. The program encourages students to have hands-on work experience in the industry. One of the "Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka" programs is Bangkit Academy. Bangkit Academy led by Google, Tokopedia, Gojek, & Traveloka is a student competency development program for a career in the world of technology designed through a partnership between the Director-General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Google, Gojek, Tokopedia, Traveloka, and university partners, and is offered through the "Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka" program for 3000 students (There are more than 70 students of Brawijaya University accepted in this program this year!). The purpose of this program is to provide students with skills relevant to the development of the world and information technology, equip students with exposure to the world of work by practitioners and experts in their fields, as well as certification so that students can work in the technology industry and bring an acceleration of the digital economy in Indonesia.
Engaging with Regional and Economic Development Efforts
There are several efforts made by Brawijaya University to support regional and local economic development. One of them is the Institute for Research and Community Service which acts as a research center to help students develop their research. In addition, there is also an entrepreneurship center that can support students by incubating entrepreneurship and so on. The agency that plays a role in this field is the Entrepreneurial Innovation and Incubator Agency. Brawijaya University also has a special study program related to entrepreneurship, namely the Entrepreneurship Department. There are certificate programs or concentrations, namely the International ABEST 21 Accreditation Certificate of Entrepreneurship Major and Economics and Business Faculty. Based on the survey that has been conducted, it is obtained an average of 9 to the estimated number of startups/year. These factors indicate that Brawijaya University has an active role in supporting regional and local economic development.
