INTRODUCTION

To engage people in collaboration, while they are competing with each other is often difficult. Stereotypes and limited insights in what's the value of collaboration can keep people away from working together. Though it is important to encourage people to collaborate since this often leads to the best outcomes due to the simple fact that a problem can be seen from many more different perspectives. Breanne Przestrzelski has shared her insights about how to hold competitions while also nurturing a collaborative environment.

BEING ENERGETIC AND OPEN MINDED

The first steps you should take when you want to create collaboration between students being passionate and energetic about your topic to create awareness for what you want to say. A next very crucial step is to be open-minded, because when you set up an event you are the example to which other people will be looking. If you are open for different ways to do something or to look at something other students will do the same and an atmosphere of collaboration can be created.

HOW TO DEAL WITH STEREOTYPES

In order to deal with stereotypes from students or teachers with different backgrounds one must realize that everyone holds their own stereotypes. Therefore, an important step is to accept that we do possess them. In order to unite everyone tasks need to be done that promote teamwork. Thus, allowing everyone to contribute and work towards a final goal. This process will allow everyone to see the value in diversity, and that they need people of all types in order for a company or group to be dynamic.

HOW TO CREATE BOTH A FRIENDLY AND COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT

The first step of this process is to make all the competitors realize that truly not only one person/ group can win, and what is most important is the experience gained in the process. You must emphasize that just as much is gained by just competing in general. Once this message is understood then a friendlier atmosphere will arise. Also, realize that not everyone will be able to have this balance, some people are purely competitors, and just learn how to work around those situations.
