Project 1: PhD Info Hub

PhD students of different departments at HSU are relatively isolated from each other. They receive most information from their direct advisors and primarily mingle with their peers in the department. There is a lack of a comprehensive information portal that comprises news or resources relevant for PhD students from all departments (such as admission details, funding etc.) and offers the opportunity to connect with each other.

This project aims to create a comprehensive platform called PhD Info Hub as a sub-page on the general HSU webpage. The page will include informational resources, news from student organisations and university administration, as well as opportunities for PhD students to connect with their peers from other departments.

Key tactics

  1. Coordination with key stakeholders including the graduate school office, IT services, heads of different departments, and PhD student representatives. Setting up of regular meet-ups with these stakeholders and development of a communication plan.
  2. Refinement of project scope and goals; start small (e.g. with a page for PhD admissions) and expand later. Building of page skeletons and fleshing out with more interactive content later. Full creation of one section before starting with the next.
  3. Creation of a user-centered platform through surveys among potential users, especially current and future PhD students. Usability testing to ensure smooth navigation and logical webpage structure.
  4. Collaboration with different university offices which could provide content for the website, e.g. graduate school office, different departments.

Project 2: Enhanging Machine Tools course with PBL module

Engineering curriculums at HSU are generally theory-heavy and lack practical contents in the coursework. A course modul that is designed to give students the opportunity to design and implement a practical project themselves can provide a valuable addition to the current curriculum, motivating students to become more innovative and creative in solving real-world problems.

Key tactics

  1. Cooperating with lecturers in the design of a practical course modul.
  2. Creation of a first course draft with a lower threshold as a start.
  3. Suggestion of a trial course with the next year of WZM students at HSU.
