Fellow:Chelsea Johnson
Chelsea Johnson is a University Innovation Fellow and graduate student at the University of Georgia (UGA). She is pursuing two Masters degrees: clinical Social Work and Public Health concentrating in health promotion and behavior. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist as of April 2017. She was raised in Maryland (UMD) where she attended the University of Maryland for undergrad and studied community health. During her time at UMD, she was very involved in resident life and relay for life. During the summer of 2014, she cycled across the country with 26 young adults from Baltimore to Portland as part of the 4k for Cancer. This ride benefitted the Ulman Foundation, which provides support to young adults with cancer. She took a job following undergrad with a non-profit focused on psychosocial support for cancer patients and their loved ones, the Cancer Support Community, at their headquarters location in Washington, DC. As their Education & Outreach coordinator, she managed projects for the Frankly Speaking About Cancer program which provides low-literacy health information about various cancer types and topics. These topics include cancer treatment and side effects, talking to children about cancer, clinical trials, and more. After two years with CSC, Chelsea decided to attend the University of Georgia to pursue her MPH/MSW degrees.
In her first year as a graduate student, Chelsea worked as a graduate assistant in the Office of the Dean of Students and interned with Jackson County Division of Family and Children Services. She was exposed to the University Innovation Fellows through a classmate and previous professor. She is excited for the opportunity to make change on UGA’s campus, inspiring innovation and collaboration. Along with being a University Innovation Fellow, she is contracting as a project manager for CSC. In her spare time, you will find her outside running or with her puppy, Chipotle.
