Steven Sedky
We met with Steven Sedky, who is an associate professor of Business and the Chair of Career Technical Education Committee.
We thought
Innovation and entrepreneurship was minimal at Santa Monica College. We also thought that our prototype presentations would be met with resistance and critical feedback (given our project's short time frame). There was an apprehension that he may take offense at the fact that we are pointing out that only the Interaction Design Department XD only has innovative courses.
We learned
Faculty can be very encouraging and excited to see student efforts (even sending out follow up emails of positive reinforcement)
sustainability and incentivizing students and professors is important
Innovation & Entrepreneurship is abundant and happening in many ways the stories are being lost
Next we will
Explore ways to implement a solution by further contacting decision-makers and departments within the school ecosystem. Plan out our ideas at more length and focus on keeping them sustaining. Develop a method to capture these stories and share them.
Bradley Lane
We met with Bradley Lane, who is Vice president Academic Affairs at Santa Monica College.
We thought
Our landscape research findings would be seen as incomplete by stakeholders and that he might have no clue what exactly we are doing since just recently was on boarded at our college. We also thought that we would have resources to start large.
We learned
He has lots of insights to help our ideas go further. He was very encouraging.
Faculty share similar sentiments regarding communication silos and lack of I&E awareness at SMC
need to create a shortlist of partners who can work together
Some of our ideas are a far reach
Next we will
We will consider utilizing what is already on campus and also push our concepts further so we can have a more finished output. We’ll also reframe and engage a larger body of students by use of storytelling and narratives within SMC promotional material.
Michael Tuitasi
We met with Michael Tuitasi , who is VP of Student Affairs at Santa Monica College.
We thought
He might be excited to see what type of work we are doing. That our focus was too biased/invested on our own program (SMC Interaction Design/IxD) as a viable example for the rest of the school. We also thought it would be a good opportunity to showcase interaction Design/IxD and share design thinking.
We learned
how hard it is to get funding
That there are areas of our ideas that are viable but must be explored further
Faculty were open to the idea of research how different departments could benefit from I&E and problem-solving/ideation methods used in UIF program
Next we will
Research ways that other areas of study (at SMC) can use design thinking in their curriculum (or within the SMC new student-orientation). Will find ways to pivot the ideas by incorporating his feedback of connecting with all the school clubs. Additionally we will scale down the ideas.
Sheila Cordova
We met with Sheila Cordova, who is a professor of Architecture and Interior Architectural Design.
We thought
That it's a good opportunity for students to show their work to her. The language and idea was being communicated well.
We learned
The language and idea was being communicated well.
that we can utilize the architecture students
Next we will
See how sustainable the ideas are and better define the language we use.
