Bio

Shamita Devanand is from Mumbai, India, and is a junior at Central Michigan University double majoring in Actuarial Science and Statistics. She combines her interest in risk management with her lifelong passion for entrepreneurship, seeing actuarial science not just as numbers but as a tool to create meaningful social impact.

On campus, Shamita has served as a Senator for the College of Science and Engineering, the Treasurer of the International Student Organization, and the Secretary of Chamakta Central, an Indian dance club. Through these roles, she has worked to strengthen community connections, celebrate cultural diversity, and give back to her university. She also mentors incoming students, helping both domestic and international students adjust to campus life and feel at home at CMU.

Her drive to make higher education more inclusive and supportive inspired her to join the University Innovation Fellows program. Shamita is excited to explore creative solutions from promoting financial literacy and insurance awareness to introducing nap stations on campus that enhance student wellbeing and foster innovation in her community.
