Magann Dykema, originally from Norton Shores, Michigan, is a University Innovation Fellow from the Spring 2015 cohort. She is a fourth year undergraduate student at Michigan Technological University studying Civil Engineering with a focus on Water Resourcing. After going on multiple mission trips during her high school career, she has found that her passion is in helping people around the world which led her to want to work in international aid and relief efforts. She is pursuing a Certificate in Global Technological Leadership through the Pavlis Honors College where she will be traveling to Brazil this summer. In Brazil, all of her design thinking training will be tested out in the world where she will be heavily focused on the empathy and define steps in order to look for projects for future teams in her program.

Magann is a strong believer in paying it forward. Because of this, she spent the last two summers working for Michigan Tech’s Summer Youth Programs because the programs she attended played a large role in her decision in school and major. Additionally, she has spent time as an Orientation Team Leader paying it forward because the guidance from her OTL helped make the transition to college easier.

At Michigan Tech, she has been working on spreading the culture of innovation by planning and facilitating creativity, design thinking, and innovation events on campus. These include, but are not limited to, #uifresh during orientation, an elementary aged after-school class, and smaller workshops and events. She has also been a part of the new makerspace on campus where last year she was the Operations Coordinator and this years she is the Student Director.

When not hard at work between school, extracurriculars, and a job on campus, Magann can be found trying to relax by striking it up on the nearest lanes, drinking coffee, watching Gilmore Girls, exploring the outdoors, cheering on the Detroit Tigers, or creating memories with friends and family.
