</xml><![endif]-->Driven to plant change and seed growth, Kayla Brandt (Barbour launched as ) is a University Innovation Fellow in Spring 18' while attending Berea College, located in the beautiful eastern knobs of Kentucky. While studying as City Planner and Urban Designer with a Technology focus on landscape resource conservation and Applied Design major, Kayla worked hydrology. Receiving her Masters in Community Planning from the Berea College Office University of Sustainability as the Waste Diversion Program coordinator and was a member of cohort 14 in the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good (EPG) program under Dr. Peter Hackbert. Recognizing an opportunity to reduce food waste by digitizing the recording and management process in the college dining hall- Cincinnati DAAP, Kayla recruited is an interdisciplinary team of students, staff, and faculty dedicated to influencing student waste behaviors through learning experienced facilitator and visual nudgingengagement specialist. Using the Innovator's Toolkit to teach Design Thinking to students and staffAs an active design thinking practitioner, Kayla led a series of Kayla’s UIF and EPG sponsored workshops training has enabled her to engage campus enrich multiple real-world projects with human centered elements that are often be overlooked in the new WOMbat system (Waste Operations Managementareas she researches such as stormwater runoff, behavior altering technology) while gathering insights about consumer preferences in the dining hall. The results of this project enabled students to have more decision-making power over meal offeringswalkability, in addition to reducing the time and hassle of properly recording food wasteutility-oriented GIS analyses.
The experience of being With a campus-wide leader familial background in green behavior real estate, Kayla hopes to work as an educator, independent sustainability planning consultant while operating a non-profit focused on educating children about sustainability plannerand gardening. In her free time, and event coordinator empowered Kayla loves to reach out to the UIF team hike and camp with her husband and encourage a change in meal planning at the annual meetupstheir two German shepherds. The Spring 2019 SVM was the first ever Zero Waste UIF meetupAn avid nature lover, and Kayla finds serenity in the woods and a crew of other Fabs worked tirelessly enjoys fossicking for minerals to add to educate the 400+ SVM attendees her collection. A random fact about composting Kayla is that she built a tiny home and recycling during the daily meals. Despite the challenges of community planning from lived in it for 3 years while in undergrad at Berea College, where she launched as a distance, Kayla hopes to continue impacting UIFellows University Innovation Fellow in the realms of sustainable decision making and personal connections with resources through online engagements and future UIF meetups!Spring 2018.
At Berea College, Kayla is currently studying for received a Masters Bachelor’s of Science in Technology and Applied Design while working in Community Planning at the University BC Office of Cincinnati DAAP Sustainability as the Waste Diversion Program coordinator. Recognizing an opportunity to fuse the UIF methodologies within her studies and labor position, she formed and managed a 15+ person team focused on reducing food waste in the college dining hall.  With a goal of reducing food waste by 15%, Kayla enjoys hiking with and her dog Leto team digitized the recording and living management process of the college’s closed-loop composting system in a holistic lifestyleproject that ultimately scaled every level of hierarchy at the college. Her professional interests include urban designKayla recruited an interdisciplinary team of students, adaptive reuse building projectsstaff, green infrastructureand faculty dedicated to influencing student waste behaviors through machine learning and visual nudging.
