Kent State Fellows' Projects

Below you can see some events and student programming that Robin Bonatesta and Matt Allen are involved in. Robin Bonatesta is a co-leader of HacKSU, the Computer Science organization on campus. Part of that includes organizing Kent Hack Enough, HacKSU's annual hackathon. Matt Allen is also a member of HacKSU and is also on the organizing team for Kent Hack Enough. Both Robin and Matt help organize the Fashion / Tech Hackathon on campus, which serves as a great example for cross disciplinary hackathons.

Southeastern Regional Meetup

In early October 2014, Robin traveled with the UIF program to Greenville, SC for the first regional meetup. Some places and organizations the fellows got to explore and learn more about that weekend include the Clemson One building (where Clemson's MBA program is localized), Clemson DEN (a network of student entrepreneurs founded by Bre Przestrzelski, a fellow at Clemson), and Openworks (a coworking space).

Midatlantic Regional Meetup

Halloween weekend of 2014, Robin traveled to the University of Maryland for the second regional meeting. They hung out at the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, where two of the UMD fellows are nown employed full-time. They also got a tour of Startup Shell and the attached rapid prototyping lab, which is a student led and run incubator. The Startup Shell is serving as a critical source of inspiration for Robin's exploration of innovation spaces. During the weekend, the fellows also spent a day in Washington DC where they saw 1776, an incubator and coworking space in the city. They also got to explore the Innovation Festival at the National Air and Space Museum in the Smithsonian Museum.

Annual Meetup

In February 2015, the four Kent State Fellows traveled to Silicon Valley for the Annual Meetup. They hung out at Google HQ and heard presentations by Google[x], Google for Entrepreneurs, and got a walkthrough tour of Google Garage, the makerspace on campus. They heard all about how Google fosters a culture of innovation within their company. The next two days, the fellows explored Stanford's d.school, where Guy Kawasaki came and gave an impromptu talk. The fellows heard talks from Stanford faculty, Apple employees, and other inspiring speakers. They also got to see some innovation spaces on Stanford's campus, like their Rapid Prototyping Lab.

Projects from Other Fellows

Below is a short list of some of the efforts from other fellows around the country. With almost 300 fellows, this is only a small list, yet it gives a good example of the grassroots student led movement that is germane to this program.
