Naveen Kumaran is a Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Miami. His focus is on biomaterials and is currently working on a research project about cost efficient cell extruding 3D printers. Kumaran is originally from San Ramon, CA, where he lived until May of 2014 when he moved to Miami, FL to begin university. Here, he was exposed to the University Innovation Fellowship thanks to his research mentor and his friend/ University Innovation Fellow Fred Etingen. At UM, Naveen is very active with the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers and aspires to be elected President his senior year. In addition, he also plays badminton for the college team and has represented his school in various tournaments like Chicago Open and Miami Open. In his spare time, he likes to travel, go hiking with friends, and listen to music. Growing up, Naveen was interested in anything that involved strategy or competition.  At a young age, his father taught him how to play chess - a hobby he quickly learned to love. Naveen would later go on to place in major tournaments including the NorCal Regionals and the California Scholastic State Chess Championship. Naveen is also very passionate about healthcare. In his opinion, physical well-being is crucial for a happy, fulfilling life. Because of this, he would like to dedicate his life to revolutionize the ways we combat disease and care for our patients.
