Maria Sagastume earned her Bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering and STEM Education and an MBA in Healthcare Management at Florida Tech in Melbourne, Florida. She is now a PhD student in Human-Centered Design and is working on her literature review for her dissertation topic. She will teach first-year experience for the 3rd time during the fall semester to first-year engineering students where she will incorporate the KEEN mindset and 3C's model that she was trained on when she represented Florida Tech at the KEEN conference as an FYE instructor. Maria is part of the group of faculty working on the KEEN project for maker spaces and incorporating entrepreneurial mindset to first year engineering students.

Her passion for STEM has allowed her to work closely with students and kids through several STEM outreach initiatives like summer camps and innovative workshops and classes.
  
Maria has been part of the department of Residence Life at Florida Tech for 5 years and she has experienced different leadership roles within this department. Currently, she is a Resident Director and supervises resident assistants in an upperclassmen area and works with other campus departments to provide safe and educational events to students that enhance their experience at Florida Tech. As a Women in STEM, Maria also serves as a champion for the Women in STEM Living Learning Community at Florida Tech where she organizes networking events and professional panels for the girls in this community. Besides this leadership experience, Maria has been an intern for a local medical device company for the past 2 years in the departments of engineering, quality and regulatory, marketing, and product and strategy. Maria hopes to work with this company for her dissertation research and study patient engagement and recovery from data obtained through cardiac monitors and implantable devices.

She has also volunteered with the Scott's Autism center at Florida Tech to plan activities for the social skill program and kids camps in the summer and fall semesters.
