[[File:JeffHansen.jpg|thumb|JeffHansen.jpg]]Jeff Hansen is a senior Biology major University Innovation Fellow working to promote interdisciplinary collaboration at the University of Notre Dame and is originally from Vienna, Virginia, a suburb of Washington D.C. Stemming from several members of his family afflicted In partnership with type 1 diabetesthe Epicenter leaders at Stanford University and VentureWell (formerly NCIIA), Jeff is passionate about finding a cure for diabetes; this passion over he hopes to expand the years has expanded into a passion for science generally. To balance his science work, Jeff also spends a significant amount ecosystem of his time with the Notre Dame band program, including most notably the Marching Bandentrepreneurship and innovation to all students.
In conjunction with these efforts, Jeff is a senior pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences and is currently applying to MD/PhD programs. With this dual degree, Jeff will combine research, medicine and education to fight disease from different angles. He hopes to apply these efforts in the setting of type 1 diabetes;this passion stems from several family members with the disease. By working at a research hospital, he can treat, prevent and educate towards the cure.
Stemming from these passions, Jeff has found great fulfillment and enjoyment from teaching, leading, and generally serving others. As such, on campus Jeff serves as Co-Chair of the Biology Senior Leadership Committee, sits on the Student Advisory Board for Undergraduate Enrollment, is a Teaching Assistant for an introductory biology lab, and is the Co-Editor of the Biology section of the undergraduate science magazine, “Scientia”. These experiences have allowed Jeff to see ways to improve the educational environment, particularly through increased engagement, a greater sense of community, more communication between student and faculty and peers, and the pursuit of stress-reduction. From this, Jeff has created two programs: Dinners for Increased Scholarly Communication (DISC), that sends a small group of students to faculty member’s houses for dinner and relaxed conversation, and Uplift, a vertical mentoring system in Biology that will create a sense of community that will allow for mentoring, tutoring and a sense of the path ahead. Jeff is currently applying to MD/PhD programs and hopes to use this degree to combine research, medicine and education to improve life from several different angles. By working as a medical school faculty, he can research towards the cure of diabetes, thus preventing further suffering, he can treat current patients, thus alleviating the present suffering, and he can educate, thus allowing others to join him in the cause. Through University Innovation Fellows, Jeff is excited to continue to improve the educational environment and be an active participant in today’s society. ==Additional Links==
