OVERVIEW

NASA Ames Research Center (ARC), also known as NASA Ames, is located at Moffett Federal Airfield in California’s Silicon Valley. As one of the many NASA facility research centers, they are not responsible for developing spacecraft. Instead, they perform research and development that helps to support the flight centers. In particular, the NASA Ames Research Center has a focus on aerodynamics and, given its place in Silicon Valley, IT and AI technologies.

As a world class research center, NASA Ames supports and values all levels of academic research for those pursuing undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees. Ames research center also fosters working relationships with small business. Weather an organization is looking to get involved with NASA projects  or requesting assistance from NASA Ames to  develop new technologies, Ames is ready and willing to help.

PURPOSE

NASA AMES Research center today is the leader in nanotechnology, information technology, fundamental space biology, biotechnology, thermal protection systems, and human factors research. Originally a center for Aeronautics, NASA AMES was the center for any and all developments in flight regimes in the 1960’s and 70’s. AMES has now turned into one of the main hubs for NASA to excel and achieve new heights when it comes to the development and implementation of new research.

Key goals of NASA AMES are to maintain expertise in information technology, aerospace and aeronautics research and engineering, Conduct research in space, Earth, lunar and biological sciences, Develop lead status for NASA in small spacecraft missions, Expand public and private partnerships, Contribute innovative, high performance and reliable exploration technologies.

Core areas of experise include, entry systems, advanced computing and IT systems, aerosciences, air traffic management, astrobiology and life science, cost-effective space missions, intelligent/adaptive systems and space and Earth science.

By visiting NASA AMES and talking to researchers a student open him/her self and their university to many avenues of communication that have never been there before. By having student visit the facility and talk to researchers you are able to get individuals making connections that will last way past the length of this students time at university. Giving faculty the ability to be able to continue that connection and develop it with new students as they arrive.

In addition, STEM outreach is a key goal for NASA AMES, running multiple programs to give higher education students better opportunities into NASA. One of these initiatives includes the 'Minority University Research and Education Program' which provides internships, scholarships, fellowships, mentoring, and tutoring for underserved and underrepresented learners

Ames Research Center, more commonly known as NASA AMES, is a place where innovation, research, and the advancement of aeronautics and technology will always belong. Since 1939, NASA AMES has been a hub for promotion of learning. Since then the center has grown and now welcomes undergraduates. NASA AMES offers a fellowship to students with a unique and driven idea for innovation and strengthening an aspect of NASA AMES. Students can also intern over the summer and be involved in actual NASA research projects. Undergraduates in an internship or fellowship position will gain skills that cannot be taught in the classroom. NASA AMES is truly a gift basket to any undergraduate seeking information or advice as he or she goes into the professional world of innovation and design.
