Bio
Sophia Hartman is a University Innovation Fellow and current sophomore at the University of Richmond, majoring in Leadership Studies with minors in Dance, Spanish (Latin American & Iberian Studies), and Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. Growing up in a small town in Tennessee, Sophia values engaging with individuals to collaborate and create mutual understanding of both ideas, initiatives, and one another. She believes that learning from one another while growing is crucial, especially to re-envisioning and improving higher education.
Two of the organizations that she is involved in and most passionate about at the University of Richmond are SASAV (Spiders Against Sexual Assault and Violence), a grassroots activist group that focuses on education, advocacy, and policy change to support survivors and prevent sexual assault and violence on campus, and Interpoint, a student-designed organization that aims to engage students in collective conversation and education about race. She hopes to continue to engage with individuals to address issues of social injustice at both a personal level and through large-scale initiatives.
Her experience engaging with a wide range of beliefs and social issues has broadened her understanding of the ways in which people engage and the reasons behind their actions, and her passion to address systemic issues in higher education through a human centered, innovative process. Sophia hopes to reimagine higher education through an understanding of the social changes students face before, during, and beyond their college experience.
