Muskan Kanungo is a University Innovation Fellow and a student at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), where she is majoring in BioMolecular Engineering. She would love to use her degree to work in the area of genetic engineering, cosmetology, water sciences, or neuroscience.
Muskan was born in North Carolina but moved to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin when she was a child. Muskan decided to attend MSOE because she believed that the small class sizes would enable her to connect with her classmates better than she would have been able to do at a larger university. Through MSOE, she found out about UIF and realized that this program focused on many of the ideologies that she had developed through her middle school and high school experiences, such as design thinking, creativity, and collaboration.
At MSOE, Muskan stays busy by participating in a variety of campus groups. She is involved in the University Honors Scholars Program, American Society for Chemical Engineers, Society for Biological Engineers, CREST (Connecting Researchers, Educators, and Students), the Water Council, and is an instructor for Girls Who Code. Besides that, Muskan is a lab aide at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), makes music, and sells art.
As a henna tattoo artist for her high school's multicultural fair, a tutor for young children, an attendee of various forensics (speech) competitions, and a participant in programs like Future City and We the People, Muskan developed and recognized her love for collaboration, empathy, and communication. Through her own experience of working with people and her self, Muskan realized the importance of how mental health and self-awareness affect team dynamics, which is how she grew a love for psychology and understanding other perspectives.
