I’m Andrew Payne and I am a junior Engineering Major with a Robotics and Mathematics Minor. Growing up, I spent time with my dad doing simple engineering projects such as circuits and working on cars. This started to tweak my interest in engineering so I decided to pursue an Engineering degree at James Madison University. Since then, I have engaged myself in Engineering Ambassadors where I represented JMU Engineering to prospective students, gave tours of the department, and held workshops for younger students to learn about engineering. I was also a part of the Engineering Leadership program where I gained skills in public speaking, mentorship, emotional intelligence and more. This experience was pivotal to the way my mindset has been shaped and increased my desire to make innovative changes to campus.
Over the past summer, I held a software engineering internship at NT Concepts where I worked to develop algorithms in python to track vehicles from aerial imagery for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. During this internship, I learned about machine learning and how government contracts and proposals work. For my capstone, I am part of a team representing JMU at the Department of Energy's Collegiate Wind Competition where will build a small-scale wind turbine and compete with other schools in this competition. I am passionate about electrical and computer engineering and I hope to utilize these skills in my future career path. My ideal job would be to work for an alternative energy company that makes electric vehicles or wind turbines.
