===Strategy #1: Using Design Thinking to Create Student Retention Solutions===
Student retention has been a persistent challenge at Marshall University, especially in light of the Marshall for All program, which aims to make college more accessible and affordable. While the initiative has opened doors for many, financial stress, lack of engagement, and limited awareness of campus resources continue to impact students’ ability to stay enrolled and graduate. We would like to use design thinking to deeply understand these barriers and create solutions that are responsive to students’ real needs. By involving students, advisors, peer mentors, and campus offices in the design process, Marshall can develop retention strategies that are innovative, sustainable, and tailored to what Marshall students are actually experiencing. The focus is on building meaningful solutions that help students succeed from enrollment through graduation
===Strategy #2: Driving Innovation Through Design Thinking on Campus===
This strategy is all about is about bringing design thinking into everyday campus life to spark new ideas, startups, and improvements. It’s a way to rethink how things work at Marshall and find creative, student-centered solutions. By encouraging collaboration, empathy, and creativity, we can improve student experiences, rethink campus services, and create new opportunities for engagement. Whether it’s through workshops, class trainings, or partnerships with different departments, design thinking gives students, faculty, and staff the tools to build meaningful change. The iCenter at Marshall University (Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) plays a huge role in this by making innovation approachable and hands-on, helping everyone feel like they can be part of the solution. Through workshops, design challenges, and cross-campus collaborations, the iCenter empowers students, faculty, and staff to turn ideas into action.
===Strategy #3: Innovate Students' Paths to Graduation Through Existing Resources ===
At Marshall University, student retention continues to be a challenge, with many students struggling to find a clear and supportive path towards graduation. To address this issue, we propose using design thinking as a tool to reimagine how the university supports students throughout their academic journey. By conducting workshops, we can better understand the barriers that students face—whether academic, financial, or social—and co-create solutions that address these points. A key focus of this strategy is to make students more knowledgeable about the resources already available to them, since many are underutilized simply because students are unaware they exist or unsure of how to access them. By embedding design thinking into retention strategies and improving awareness of resources, we not only empower students to take ownership of their educational pathways but also create a culture where innovation directly contributes to higher graduation rates and long-term student success.

Our goal is to create a platform to centralize and promote these opportunities. It is our belief that a single source of funding and research opportunities would increase the number of candidates and better market the individual opportunities. By casting a wider net of candidates, researchers and organizations have a wider pool of talent to choose from, and vice versa in terms of students choosing opportunities.
===Strategy #3:Increasing Sustainability Efforts while Improving Region's Economic Development===
Marshall University is located in Huntington, which is the second largest city in West Virginia, and a hub of business and economic development for the state. Recent economic advancement efforts have aided in increasing opportunities for the state, and one reoccurring theme among different initiatives is an increased awareness of sustainability. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were designed in 2015 as a way to measure progress towards attaining a more sustainable planet; West Virginia currently ranks 49/50 of all states in terms of progression towards attaining these goals.

Our university successfully inspires creativity and innovation in entrepreneurial students, yet students struggle with finding financial funding to begin their startup. Our second strategy is called Startup Marshall, which is a way for Entrepreneurship students to create their own pre-seed fund and grow their funds through alumni donations. </span></span>
