Lavanya grew up in Nebraska, where she has also lived most of her life. Growing up around family members working in the natural sciences, she also discovered her love for the subject. Combining this with her newfound discovery of computer science, Lavanya reached the juncture of bioinformatics. After joining a community at UNO that would help her to pursue a degree in this, Lavanya was exposed to the UIF program, .
