While studying as a Technology and an undergraduate student at Applied Design major, Kayla worked in the Berea CollegeOffice of Sustainability as the Waste Diversion Program coordinator and was a member of cohort 14 in the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good (EPG) program under Dr. Working towards her B.SPeter Hackbert. Recognizing an opportunity to reduce food waste by digitizing the recording and management process in Technology the college dining hall- Kayla recruited an interdisciplinary team of students, staff, and faculty dedicated to influencing student waste behaviors through learning and Applied visual nudging. Using the Innovator's Toolkit to teach Design Thinking to students and staff, Kayla led a series of UIF and EPG sponsored workshops to engage campus with a minor the new WOMbat system (Waste Operations Management, behavior altering technology) while gathering insights about consumer preferences in Sustainability Studiesthe dining hall. The results of this project enabled students to have more decision-making power over meal offerings, Kayla’s research is concentrated on Renewable Energy & Co-operative Utility Ownershipin addition to reducing the time and hassle of properly recording food waste. With aspirations The experience of becoming being a campus-wide leader in green behavior as an educator, sustainability planner, and event coordinator empowered Kayla to reach out to the UIF team and encourage a biophilic designerchange in meal planning at the annual meetups. The Spring 2019 SVM was the first ever Zero Waste UIF meetup, and Kayla is deeply passionate and a crew of other Fabs worked tirelessly to educate the 400+ SVM attendees about nature composting and incorporating holistic methodology into recycling during the daily meals. When not talking trash or sustainability, Kayla enjoys hiking with her dog Leto and was awakened to the devastating effects of fossil fuel extraction at living a very young ageholistic lifestyle. Since moving to LexingtonHer professional interests include urban design, KY in 1999 she has been actively involved in promoting environmental justiceadaptive reuse building projects, actiongreen infrastructure, and awareness in the local communitygreen-forward policy making. At Berea College, Kayla Barbour is employed at the Office of Sustainability as the Waste Diversion Program Coordinator. In addition to managing student participation in the recycling and compost programs, she also plans campus-wide events and engages students through public speaking and educational outreach. As President and Founder of the Berea College Students of Sustainability club, she strives to strengthen the collegiate focus on sustainable behavior through interactive programming and fun activities. Barbour firmly believes that an innovative entrepreneurial spirit is necessary to make a positive impact on the environment, and she hopes to utilize the design thinking process to contribute meaningful solutions to the global climate change crisis. When not busy with school or sustainability endeavors, Kayla enjoys studying Feng Shui and singing as a mezzosoprano.
