Zişan is a University Innovation Fellow Candidate and a junior Chemical Engineering student aiming to improve herself on environmental sustainability. She was born in Çorum which is a small northern Anatolian city in Turkey. She's lived there until the end of her high school education and has moved to Istanbul for her university education when she was 18.

She got involved in various projects related to different social and environmental issues. Those projects raised her awareness about what’s going on in the world and how she, as a chemical engineer, can play a role in solving those issues. At the top of all global issues, she believes that we should start with the environment-related ones. Because, they are the cause of most social issues including global poverty, migration and inequalities. She has been doing research about biodegradation and eco-friendly materials and she wants to direct her academic background to clean energy and sustainable production systems. Also, she has been working as a climate change and sustainability consulting intern for a time.

With her experiences she gained through her journey, she wants to make a change for a better and equal world. That's why she is here.

== '''STRATEGY #1: IMPROVING SOCIAL INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM''' ==

=== Project: Bright Pitching Day ===

=== Project Details ===

One of the biggest problems of the students in our school is to hesitate to express their ideas. This is because people despise them or steal their ideas. As people with the entrepreneurship mindset, we believe that sharing will always strengthen ideas.

I designed the Pitching Day event for this. There will be 5 teams, audince and 3 successful juries. We will share an application form for selection of teams using our communication channels. For the event, 3 successful startup co-founders will be contacted and asked to be a jury. The event will be advertised for participants from our communication channels. The event will be in the center's office on our main campus. There will be a 30-minute networking session before the event starts. Here, the owners, the participants and the juries will have the chance to meet. Idea owners will write the type of people they need on a whiteboard. There will be a 5 minute presentation and 5 minute question and answer session in front of the juries. After the presentations are over, participants will be able to talk to them to join their teams.

We will provide office and entrepreneurship training to the 2 winning teams.

== '''STRATEGY #2: CREATING FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELECTED STARTUPS''' ==

=== Project: Bright Demo Day ===

'''''Person in Charge:''''' Berkay Kani

=== Project Details ===

Entrepreneurs often face financial problems while expanding their startups. In some times, things cannot be done and solved without money.

Teams selected to work in our incubation center are also experiencing this problem. So I designed the Bright Demo Day event to solve the investment problem of these startups. At this event, there will be teams who selected in Pitching Day and who completed entrepreneurship training in our incubation center. Using the network of Entrepreneurship Center, 3 seed investors will be contacted and offered to be a jury in the event. Then 5 teams will be selected to make presentations in front of the investors. The teams will tell the investors their products, ask for a certain amount of investment and try to convince the investors to make this investment. In fact, the event is similar to the Shark Tank event. Teams that can convince investors will receive investment and will have the opportunity to grow their startups further.

== '''STRATEGY #3: TRAINING MORE ENTREPRENEURS''' ==
=== Project: Bright Experience ===

'''''Person in Charge:''''' Fatih Gözükara

=== Project Details ===

There is too much event on entrepreneurship but not enough entrepreneurs. In order to train more entrepreneurs, we need to work more to the point than general events. For this, we have designed an experience-oriented, beginning-to-end process that will have a good story for all of us at the end of the day.

=== Project Details ===

There is too much event on entrepreneurship but not enough entrepreneurs. In order to train more entrepreneurs, we need to work more to the point than general events. For this, we have designed an experience-oriented, beginning-to-end process that will have a good story for all of us at the end of the day.

=== BRIGHT EXPERIENCE ===

'''Bright Talks (Hello World)'''

First of all, there will be a series of speeches where entrepreneurs can find answers to our questions such as what is entrepreneurship, what is not, what is the place of what we call the entrepreneurship ecosystem, how an entrepreneur's life progresses, what challenges and opportunities await those who want to become entrepreneurs. An entrepreneur and an investor will be invited to these events in order to appeal to the entrepreneurs who already have an enterprise, if possible, the enterprises will be from the enterprises that have invested, and the investor will be the investors of this enterprise.

'''Bright Learns (We Learn to Walk)'''

Trainings on problem solving methods and tools such as Design Thinking, which are used in the process of producing innovative solutions to problems, will be organized. Additionaly, these trainings include project management, marketing, brand building and so on. Processes will be supported by additional trainings on which we can improve ourselves.

'''Bright Works (Walking, Sometimes Running)'''

Until now, we have heard and learned many things about entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity. We will do some work to practice what we have learned. First of all, we will organize case studies with startups in the incubation center. (We can invite external startup.) We will try to find solutions to their problems. In this way, we will not only support the startups of our school and we will be familiar with them, but also will be working on concrete works and practicing and increasing our knowledge on this subject.

In the second stage, companies will be asked for projects which are open to innovation. We will be working on these projects as a team work in the form of long-term projects or pop-up workshops. Here we will both have seen real business and will learn a lot from their experience as we will work with companies.

'''Bright Wins (We're Dancing or Something Like That)'''

As it will work with companies in this process, various opportunities such as global awards, internship opportunities in innovation-oriented units in the companies, and tasks that can be taken in startups can be created according to the scope of the projects. We will be working on that part. We may be open to surprises.

Better yet, maybe one of us will start their own startups in the process.

Boğaziçi University was founded in Istanbul,Turkey as Robert College in 1863 by Dr.Cyrus Hamlin,an educator, inventor, technician, architect and builder, and Mr. Christopher Rheinlander Robert, a well-known philanthropist and a wealthy merchant from New York. In March 1971, Rector John Scott Everton revealed the resolution passed on January 26, 1971, by the Board of Trustees to the effect that the Turkish government should be encouraged to establish an independent university as a successor to Robert College on either of the campuses. The merger was finalized in the summer of 1971. Today's South Campus of 118 acres, including buildings, the library, laboratories and all facilities and personnel, was passed on to the Turkish government, and on September 10, 1971, Bogazici University was officially established on what had been the Robert College campus for over one hundred years.

=== OVERVIEW ===
'''Vision'''

Boğaziçi University’s vision is to be a leading institution of higher education, one that shapes the future through being a pioneer in education, teaching, and research. The primary tenets of our vision are to:

* Enrich the education and teaching experiences with innovative and creative approaches;
* Strengthen the culture of science, research, creativity, and innovation to become one of the leading research universities in the world; and to
* Contribute to shaping a better future through our academic, scientific, and cultural activities.

'''Mission'''

Boğaziçi University’s mission is to educate individuals who embrace it’s institutional values, who are able to think both creatively and critically, who are independent and egalitarian, who appreciate ethical values, who respect nature and are aware of environmental issues, who are rooted in the local and open to the global, and who can, with their self-confidence and scholarly, social and cultural foundations, successfully take on leadership positions anywhere in the world.

Boğaziçi University’s mission also encompasses producing universal thought, science, and technology in service of humanity, and playing a pioneering role in encouraging the spread of science, culture, and the arts throughout society.

In our university, promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship is on development stage. Turkey has a common belief of buildign your own company is a risk which is not necessary to take. Being an engineer is more valuable and meaningful than being an entrepreneur. But our university is more supportive to students to become entrepreneurs and according to the number of people who becomes successful entrepreneurs, Boğaziçi University is on the top. There is a real effort to give students entrepreneurial mindset through Bright Entrepreneurship & Innovation Incubation Center, entrepreneurship committees of student clubs and Technology Transfer Office. There are lots of successful entrepreneurs in the entrepreneurship ecosystem from Boğaziçi University.

=== ENCOURAGING FACULTY INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP ===

Faculty members of our university are most likely to be supportive on having entrepreneurial mind and being innovative as seen that most of the successful entrepreneurs in the entrepreneurship ecosystem are from Boğaziçi University. Although the opportunities of the school on entrepreneurship is questionable, every year lots of student startups are built. There are several courses on entrepreneurship and innovation in certain departments but students from all departments are accepted via a consent from instructor. Bright Entrepreneurship & Innovation Incubation Center is built in 2016 and every year new startups join the center.

=== ACTIVELY SUPPORTING THE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER FUNCTION ===

Boğaziçi University Technology Transfer Office's main goal is to convert business ideas into real startups with the help of TUBITAK Dream Bigg programme. They provide a high range of industrial network, professional mentorships, funding opportunities and coworking spaces provided by TTO's partner Bright Incubation Center. They do not only help social innovations but also student's high tech projects. They help getting patent and licence processes to BOUN students who own a business idea. They offer education on setting up a company and funding opportunities, and work with academicians and students who'll set up a company.

=== FACILITATING UNIVERSITY-INDUSTRY COLLABORATION ===
[[File:Unnamed-13.jpg|thumb|right|BUMED (Alumni Center)]]

Boğaziçi University is in deep connection with the biggest startups in entrepreneurship ecosystem. Other than funding opportunities of TTO, because of the network of Bright, crowdfunding is a common method in Boğaziçi University. Prominent business people of Turkey who are BOUN graduates, always replies when a startup needs funding. It may not seem sustainable but far now it's working properly. Bright Entrepreneurship Center is now developing new and more systematic funding ways for startups. There is also another channel which connects industry and school, BUMED. It is Boğaziçi University Alumni Society which brings students and alumnis together for several purposes which are mentorship, funding etc.

=== ENGAGING WITH REGIONAL AND LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS ===

Boğaziçi University doesn't have a direct effort of engaging local economic development. Indirectly speaking, the university has its incubation center, teknopark and technology transfer office. Those departments can be thought as such efforts.

People think that it's not ethical to get some percentage of the revenue as a service charge. They want to be sure that all of their payment will be spent to create an impact directly. However, it's not realistic to think in that way. Because social enterprises are also a kind of enterprise and need money to sustain their services. They have the finance team, the marketing team, the operations team etc. just the same as enterprises. They still have a place for net profit at their business models, but creates a social or environmental impact at the same time. Social enterprises have employees while the charities "mostly" have volunteers.
