<div><br/></div><div>Yi Wang</div><div>Learning Experience Design | Social Entrepreneurship</div><div>Yi Wang is a University Innovation Fellow, as well as a Psychology major at [[File:Profile Pic Yi Wang.JPG|thumb]]Smith college.Yi is also a social entrepreneur, designer, and learning experience expert, and she is never satisfied with one hashtag only. She became a high school teacher while she was a high school student. She piloted the first service learning elective at the most selective school in Guangzhou, China and instructed 25 students to accomplish their projects. Prior starting college, she took a gap year and founded her studio YS prompting sustainable and socially-responsible fashion in China. Her mission-driven studio then transformed into a Design school where she aimed to empower migrant children (children of migrant factory workers lack of access to public education due to House Registration System) with mindsets and skill-sets to be fashion designers. Yi is great with creating toys, games and activities. She employees the lens of design and strategy to support organizations explore ideas, advance their capacity and enhance their impact. She has designed and facilitated ice-breaking, Hackathon, Design Thinking workshops for renowned organizations such as Asia Society, Harvard Leadership Summit, Harvard SEED social innovation camp, Clover Youth. The past summer, Yi was an intern at Ashoka working with Project Start Empathy.</div><div><br/></div><div>

Hi, My name is Jessica Innis, and I am a UIF fellow for Smith College. I am a Chemistry major and an Economics minor. My interests include art, music, dance, and food. I am just your friendly entrepreneur ready to storm the world with social change!

I am currently working on a digital media project to promote and empower black women. I hope to later scale this to a full business. I am very interested in entrepreneurship, and I want to create a company with purpose. With design thinking and innovation, I belive that it is possible. 

I am grateful for the friendships I have made in the UIF circle such as Amanda Lavond, Yi Wang, Lingxuan Li, and Mandira Marambe. And we are grateful to be from a liberal arts college, as it has been proven to be an advantage. 

I'm excited to see where we will go from here as part of UIF.

<span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Mandira Marambe is a University innovation Fellow pursuing a BSc. in Engineering and Minor in </span><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Physics at Smith College, [[File:Mandira Marambe.jpg|thumb|Mandira Marambe.jpg]]</span><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Massachusetts. She is part of a circle of five UIFs at Smith, and has also </span><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); vertical-align: baseline;">worked with design thinking methodologies in the classroom.</span></span><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">In her spare </span><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">time, Mandira volunteers with the Science Outreach Program, is on the editorial board for an online journal, and is involved with several student organizations on campus.</span>

Mandira is a strong believer in spending her time doing what she loves, and hopes to follow her passions to wherever they lead her.</span></span>

This year she is researching the use of design thinking in cartography. Originally from the Bay Area, Amanda was in Durham for the summer, interning at the North Carolina Museum of Art and also an architecture firm. Amanda appreciates the way design thinking and human-centered design has complemented her studies in architecture, and hopes to implement it into future designs. Smith College is private women's liberal arts college in Northampton, Massachusetts. Founded in 1871, the college is well established in the arts and the humanities as well as the sciences, and has over 50 areas of study. The school also supports numerous extra-curricular and co-curricular opportunities as well as a number of services to aid students in achieving their diverse goals.

== <span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; font-weight: 700; white-space: pre-wrap;">Promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship</span> ==

<span id="docs-internal-guid-51b08a59-e08b-3596-e9bd-ddc7ea01d93a"><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Student innovation and entrepreneurship at Smith College has recently begun gaining momentum in both available resources and demonstrated student interest. Smith has a number of courses and workshops, both interdepartmental and department-specific, that introduce the concepts of design thinking and entrepreneurship, allow students to use and experiment with these tools in hands-on settings, and build their creative confidence.  These curricular resources are supplemented by other extra-curricular opportunities such as various conferences, competitions, and student organizations that allow students to gain further exposure and enrich their innovative experiences. The recently established Conway Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship works hard to inspire and encourage students to engage in innovative ventures.</span></span>

<span id="docs-internal-guid-51b08a59-e08b-3596-e9bd-ddc7ea01d93a"><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As a liberal arts college, Smith has mostly focused on encouraging and supporting faculty as researchers and teachers. While this does allow innovation in terms of designing courses and workshops, there is little encouragement towards entrepreneurial ventures. Deeply academic individuals, the faculty demonstrates limited interest in these areas of work. However, a recently launched series of design thinking workshops for faculty, and the Sherrerd Center for Teaching and Learning show promise of an emerging I&E culture among the faculty. Further efforts to strengthen and support this transformation is necessary, however, in order to have the culture established and accepted.</span></span>

The office also notifies students of upcoming job and internship application deadlines or opportunities via regular emails. University-industry collaboration is also strengthened by field trips, conferences, and alumnae outreach. The academic departments also facilitate major-specific industry communication by forwarding information about opportunities to students. However, these opportunities are limited and do not accommodate a broad variety of academic and vocational interests.</span></span>
