The Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship (NNCE) serves as the heart of entrepreneurial endeavor and innovation at Dalhousie University. Its leading initiative, LaunchDal™, provides a series of credit and noncredit programs to help students, researchers and early-stage ventures to take their ideas to the next level.

The Starting Lean course is focused on Lean methodology and provides student teams with funding of $1,500 to build their minimal viable product.

The Innovation course highlights the frameworks and best practices of design thinking and pushes students toward building prototypes by offering $1,000 in funding.

Launch Dal's $100,000 Competition is qualifier competition for students to gain entrance to LaunchPad Accelerator.

LaunchPad Accelerator is an 8-week summer program for student startups with $10,000 in seed funding to elevate their idea to the next level.

E-corps is a program consisting of a series of workshops based on the Lean LaunchPad approach using the Business Model Canvas developed by Alexander Osterwalder. This is a team-based training program (at least two members from each organization or research project), where participants work collaboratively to test their hypothesis related to the commercialization potential of their product. Workshops embrace both Design Thinking and Lean LaunchPad approaches to Customer Discovery and Customer Development using a hands-on method for participant teams.

The Entrepreneurial Skills Program (ESP) Certificate is a post-secondary program that facilitates the development, growth and success of student-run business ventures. ESP is designed to add to skills learned in the classroom through extracurricular, individualized, and experiential learning. The program culminates in the development of a personal portfolio that illustrates a student’s entrepreneurial capabilities. Upon successful completion of ESP, students are accredited and receive a certificate indicating venture readiness.

The competition is hosted and organized by the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship’s LaunchDal Programming in collaboration with Dalhousie University’s Rowe School of Business. Canada’s Business Model Competition ® has been sanctioned as the national qualifier competition for the International Business Model Competition (IBMC) with the winner advancing to the IBMC. The winners of Canada’s Business Model Competition ® will share $50,000 in cash and in-kind prizes.

Collider (Innovation Space)is a space for LAUNCHDAL’s programming: courses, programs, events, competitions and more. However the space will also be available to students while not in use by the NNCE.

Dalhousie University offers a Major in Entrepreneurship and Innovationfor the Faculty of Management and Commerce Programs at the undergraduate level. In addition to the Starting Lean and Innovation courses, Dalhousie University offers two for-credit courses regarding entrepreneurship: New Venture Creation COMM 3307, and Managing the Venturing Process (MGMT 4901/COMM 4301). An Entrepreneurial Work Term is offered to commerce students who have their own business venture or would like to work on their own idea to fulfill their co-op or internship requirements. In addition, NNCE co-hosts a series of entrepreneurial events including Pitch 101, Startup Canada Tour, Next 36, and Demo Camp. Demo Camp is an event that showcases local startups solely through product demos rather than traditional presentations. Dalhousie University also has an official partnership with Next 36.

The Dalhousie Entrepreneurship Society (D.E.S.) strives to build inclusive innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem on the Dalhousie University campus by exposing students in all faculties to resources and funding opportunities, organizing hackathons and connecting them with the local startup community.

Enactus is a student society focusing on improving the community through entrepreneurial action. Enactus is very focused on getting the students envolved with innovation and entrepreneurship ideas that benefit the larger local, national, or international community.

The Entrepreneurs and Law Association of Dalhousie Society hosts law clinics to answer legal questions in relation to starting a business. Issues such as corporate structures, taxation, intellectual property, contracts, shareholder agreements and privacy law are discussed in a round-table format.

'''Events and Activities Around Campus.'''

Startup weekend is a fantastic event happening around campus twice a year which gets students from different disciplines working together on bright new ideas. It is led by the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship and managed by faculty and volunteers with the centre.

Hackamarine is a student led hackathon focused on marine and oceanography which allows allows students to work on their ideas and bring them to life. The event has much suport from the oceanography department and the faculty of management which got a lot of students involved and interacting together to work on their ideas.

== FACULTY INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP ==

Dalhousie University's I&E ecosystems is still in its growing stage. There have been several champions working on developing the ecosystem, but only very recently has the government started to put more pressure on universities to promote entrepreneurship. There is a group of local political, academic and business leaders called oneNS Coalition. The mandate of oneNS Coalition is to instill further growth in the region and a 10 year plan for economic development and sustainability. Based on this initiative there was a "Now or Never Report" released by the chair of the One Nova Scotia Commision Ray Ivany. One of the major topics in this report is entrepreneurship and innovation. Our president Dr. Richard Florizone is very involved with this initiative and strongly advocates entrepreneurship and innovation as one of the top priorities for the university. As a result from this growing interest in I&E, the Faculty of Engineering announced a project called Innovation Hub (IDEA Building) which is a multipurpose building on Sexton Campus that would serve as a hub for innovation on Sexton Campus. E-corps is another great initiative by Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship to help researchers commercialize their reserch by applying lean methodology and design thinking frameworks and providing them with small seed capital to build their minimal viable products. There is also an initiative to introduce an Entrepreneurship Certificate across faculties.

Some faculty have been very interested in developing the I&E in the student body. For example, a new course has been started for rapid prototyping in the forth year level. It is considered a computer science credit, but is open to students of other faculties. Courses like this are constantly being developed by different faculty members all around campus. Doctor Fiona Black is also launching a program for certification in "creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship" to provide students from all faculties with the ooportunity to add entrepreneurship to their degree. The certificate name starts with the word "creativity" because it is a ver neutral word where students from all faculties can see themselves doing. It comprises of both for-credit courses and extracurricular work that students have to do in order to be accredited with the certificate. It is a greatinnitiative to allow students to achieve work a little bit outside of their field and allow them to bring their bright ideas and pursue them.

== UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER FUNCTION ==

Industry Liaison and Innovation (ILI) manages and facilitates collaborations between companies and university researchers, commercializes research at Dalhousie University, and assists in the creation of spin-off ventures.

== FACILITATING UNIVERSITY - INDUSTRY COLLABORATION ==

ShiftKey Labs Sandbox is a workspace open to all students, located in Golberg Computer Science Building. ShiftKey Labs recently organized a hackathon event regarding sustainability called Smart Energy App Challenge.

IDEA Sandbox where IDEA is "standing for “Innovative Design and Entrepreneurship Academy” is a collaborative initiative between Faculty of Engineering, the Rowe School of Business and NSCAD University.

Cultiv8 is anAgricultural Sandbox (workspace) located in the MacRae Library on the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro. Incollaboration with NNCE's LaunchDal, Cultiv8 organized a first-of-its-kind Startup Weekend in Truro focusing on agriculture and food.

Volta Labs is a local workspace for early-stage startups that holds its tenants and network members accountable with a strong mentorship and peer-to-peer validation which help companies grow and scale faster. Volta also provides students with the ability to register for Volta network membership to stay connected to all events and offer them useful discounts for startups from companies such as Amazon or Hubspot.

The Technology Innovation Centre, run by the local venture capital group Innovacorps, provides local startups with multipurpose space off campus. Innovacorps organizes a biennial I3 Competition which is open to all students with early-stage startups or ideas to compete for over $900,000 in prizes across Nova Scotia.

The Collider, launched recently on October 2015, is multipurpose collaborative space located on the second floor of the main campus library. The space used for delivering Launch Dal programming; courses, programs, events, competitions and more. However the space is also be available to students to collaborate with their teams on their projects, to brainstorm, and to study while not in use by the Norman Newman Centre.

Innovacorps' Early Stage Commercialization Fund (ESCF)assists and supports the academic community in the pursuit of entrepreneurial opportunities. The purpose of ESCF is to provide support for projects demonstrating readiness to advance a technology that has achieved, or is close to achieving, a prototype/proof-of-concept stage and is approaching market readiness with a possibility of attracting industry partners and/or investment. The prospect of generating a new revenue stream must also be apparent.

= OVERVIEW =
Dalhousie University is located in the heart of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Local startup ecosystem in Halifax is still at its growing stage. There have been several champions working on developing the ecosystem, but only very recently has the government started to put more pressure on universities to promote entrepreneurship and facilitate deeper connection with the local startup community. Based on this initiative there was a group of political, academic and business leaders formed called oneNS Coalition. The mandate of oneNS Coalition is to instill further growth in the region and a 10 year plan for economic development and sustainability. One of the major topics is entrepreneurship and innovation.

Going through the training to become University Innovation Fellow, we had a great opportunity to get out of the building and talk to large amount of students and faculty member from across the campus and map out our campus landscape and recognize some of the major shortcomings that need to be addressed.
One of our findings was that students are not very aware of the resources and possiblities the E&I community can offer them at Dalhousie and Halifax. Although, some students are aware of some societies, events and spaces that are offered to them, majority of the students are in the mindset that the resources are mostly for business students at Dalhousie. This creates a lack of cross-faculty interaction under E&I.

The Sexton Engineering Campus at Dalhousie University is physically isolated from the main campus, Studley. This hinders the opportunity for full collaboration within the main campus. We believe that cross-faculty collaboration is essential for further growth of our startup ecosystem. A great example of this is a company called Spring Loaded, where three students from various faculties met in the Starting Lean Course, came up with an idea for a new generation of knee braces and rose over $1.8 million in seed financing to date.

Dalhousie Entrepreneurship Society (D.E.S.) has done tremendous work in the short amount of time they have had since the society was created. Most of the activities and events that we will host will be under D.E.S. because it will give us the platform and power to be in touch with students who have shown some interest in E&I. The D.E.S. will be our main hub that will allow us to get funding and reach the maximum number of students, stakeholder and investors. Our main goal this year is to get increased involvement from students, and for that, we need some funding to be able to bring value to them where they will have the incentive to join our society and take part in our activities.

= Strategy #1 - Connecting Engineering Students with the rest of the campus =
We are very pleased with the initiative from the university and the province to create the Innovation Hub (IDEA Building) which is a Multipurpose building on Sexton Campus. As University Fellow candidates, we fully support this initiative and are willing to help to further promote it as well as help with information interviews, planning and further ideation on its programs and events.
== Tactic no.1: Engineering Connect (E-Connect)==

D.E.S plans to organize a series of workshops and events that facilitates the free flow of ideas and networking between the Sexton Engineering Campus and rest of the faculties at Dalhousie University. This way we can form a bridge and promote the interaction and collaboration between the engineering students and the rest.

== Tactic no.2: Maker Club - Garage ==

Create a student-led club on the main campus that will promote our main makerspace on Sexton Campus. This space would serve as place where students can get in initial contact with 3D Printing, Electronics, Raspberry Pi’s and more. This would create a funnel of students on main campus for Innovation Hub on Sexton Campus.

= Strategy #2 - Dalhousie Entrepreneurship Society (D.E.S.) =
A student-centric organization on campus that aims to build an inclusive innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem on the Dalhousie University campus from within by exposing students in all faculties to resources and funding opportunities, organizing hackathons, startup weekends, conferences and connecting them with the local startup community. D.E.S serves as a vehicle to deliver our strategic student priorities and initiatives.

== Tactic no.1: Build a framework which we can pass along for next generation of student entrepreneurs. ==

We are building a structure for our society so the new executives for the years to come can have a base to rely on. It is important for us not to just start a society but to also keep it alive and pass it on to other new executives who can take our roles and keep growing it as time goes by. This will be done through getting a ot of people involved with our events and setting guidlines and goals for us to achieve within a timeline. That way, students will take the society seriously and keep it going to achieve its goal of spreading innovation and entrepreneurship around campus.

== Tactic no.2: Recruit students in their first and second year to ensure sustainable future for D.E.S. ==
By getting students involved in the Entrepreneurship Society we can ensure a sustainable future for the society. Society will keep growing as years go by and students will have time to become familiar with E&I before their graduation, which ultimately will increase the chances of more E&I student achievements at Dalhousie.

== Tactic no.3: Raise awareness with series of student-driven events, meetups and competitions.==

In addition, we are currently in the process of creating new By-Laws and a more comprehensive Constitution to enable us fully establish ourselves as the leading student-led organization promoting Entrepreneurship and Innovation on Campus and help us seek further funding opportunities.

= Strategy #3 - Collider Space in Library (Innovation space in Killam Library) =
The Collider is a multipurpose space in Killam Library for the collision of serendipitous ideas where from all academic and professional disciplines can come together to develop ideas and and create the future generation of innovators. The Collider connect students, local startups, mentors, investors and allows them to work together to help further grow the local startup ecosystem. Killam Library is the least-siloed space on the campus and place where people come together. It is in our best interest to help push this initiative to its full potential.

== Tactic no.1: Series of Hackathons, Events & Conferences ==

The Collider would serve a great venue for a series of student-led Hackathons, Events & Conferences. The university does not currently host any regular hackathons for students, and that is something that needs to be changed. Our idea is to host a monthly hackathon with a different theme each month. One month it can be for ocean science and ocean projects, while another month it can be a computer science hackathon, and possibly a medical science hackathon. These hackathons will serve as a great place for students who have ideas in each of these disciples to come together and work on them 

Events and coferences are in our long term plan, but we definitely plan on hosting at least one big event a year to showcase the amazing students who have come up with innovative ideas for each year.

= Strategy #4 - Co-curricular Record (Design Thinking & Lean Methodology) =
We proposing to have Design Thinking & Lean Methodology offered as official co-curricular record to motivate students to get introduced to the entrepreneurial mindset. This would serve as an ideal channel to non-invasively encourage students to get involved with entrepreneurship on the campus.
== Tactic no.1: Register all the Entrepreneurship and Innovation related events, contests, competitions, workshops etc. on co-curricular database. ==

We have a great co-curricular record program at Dalhousie Unversity and we would like to leverage that to attract more students into our events and workshops. It is very important that students get recognized for the work that they have done, and showing them that the activities that they do with us will be officially recorded on their transcript is just an extra incenstive to attracting them into our programs. 

== Tactic no.2: Enable students to enter their volunteer, participant, mentor, speaker, winner positions within E&I on their co-curricular record which later will benefit their resume. ==

By allowing students to specify their roles for the specified events, workshops, contests, projects etc. in the co-curricular record will build the desire of wanting to engage more and be a part of something. This way students can have an attachment to the event, workshop etc. they took a part in.

= Strategy #5 – Start a bi-weekly E&I Newsletter to Keep Students and Stakeholders Informed =
Our main issue around campus right now is to to get the word out and to get students involved with entrepreneurship and to pursue their ideas. After a lot of customer discover, we find that a newsletter to get the word out would be the ideal way to let students, faculty and alumni know about our activities and events that we are hosting.

== Tactic no.1: Grow a newsletter network of students, alumni, and stakeholders. ==

There is currently a big gap between students and I&E activities around Dalhousie, and we would like to fill in this gap by providing a regular nuewsletter that allows the students to be informed of all the acitivites and events that we are hosting or the ones that are being led by other societies or faculties around Dalhousie. We believe this would be a great way to get more and more students engaged and informed of our events.

== Tactic no.2: Keep the newsletter network posted about E&I related news, events, workshops, competitions etc ==

We know that a newsletter is a good idae, but having a lot of irrelevant information in there might make people dislike us and stay away. So we believe that we should keep the newsletter "short and sweet". This means that we will only add relevant and exciting information to the newsletter so studnets actually enjoy reading it and want us to post more.

== Tactic no.3: Encourage people to sign up and keep reading the newsletter by hosting regular give away draws. ==

= Strategy #6 – Promote the use of The Collider =

== Tactic no.1: Hosting regular workshops in order to get students more informed and engaged about E&I ==

As part of our initiative to get more students involved from all faculties, we will be hosting regular events and workshops for students to gain all the skills they need to run a startup. These workshops have to be regular so students get to know the schedule and come as they have available time. The workshops will be hosted by guest speakers and facilitated by volunteers. The topics we wish to cover include coding for beginners, design, making effective phone calls, and much more.

== Tactic no. 2: Build a design thinking corner in the collider space ==

We would like to enable students to use physical office/home supplies to create their prototypes right in the collider during the workshops, events, or contests. This will allow students to create a physical prototype and get one step closer to the final product.

= Strategy #7 – Hold More Student-Lead Hackathons on a Regular Basis =
We want to challenge the idea that hackathons are only tech-related. In order to get students from all backgrounds and faculties involved, we have to host hackathons for different disciplines like a hackathon for computer science, one for health sciences and another for ocean science. Dalhousie Entrepreneurship Society held the first student-led hackathon for Oceanography and Marine programs Hackamarine 2015. Hackamarine is going to be an annual event held at Dalhousie University, a school well known for its world-class Marine & Oceanography programs. This is a cross-faculty event aiming to bring talent from various fields to work on major problems in Oceans & Marine Sciences. The winning teams took home a cumulative total of $5,000 in prizes.

==Tactic no.1: Keep Hackamarine running annually to get more oceanography/earth sciences students engaged in E&I.==

First Hackamarine was a great success. It didn't only help exposing oceanography/earth sciences to E&I, but it was a great turn out regarding collaboration of cross faculty students. Students from oceanography, engineering, arts, phycology, commerce and management formed teams and brought different mindsets to marine problems and came with ideas on how to solve them.

== Tactic no.2: Start the Dalhousie Hackathon Series (DHS), a series of monthly held hackathons created by partnering with different organizations and faculties to ensure collaboration. ==

As mentioned above, the hackathons will be a great way to get all students involved in different fields and to start to get them innovating. The hackathons will have different themes, but they will all be open to all students so everyone is welcome to join and learn about the different topics. We believe this will be a great way to attract students from all around dalhousie and get them together working on great ideas. Having traditional hackathons is great, but adding different topics and inviting the general student body will ensure high attendance numbers and excitement for everyone.

==Tactic no.3: Make Hackathons inviting for any student all over the four campuses of Dalhousie University. ==

We decided to call all the students around all four campuses into action! Sending out emails, hanging posters on the walls, creating social media invitations etc. We are dedicated to grab the attention of students in different faculties. We want to show students that E&I isn't only for engineering and business students.

Killam Library is the least-siloed space on the campus and place where people come together. It is in our best interest to help push this initiative to its full potential.

The Collider would serve a great venue for a series of student-led Hackathons, Events & Conferences. The university does not currently host any regular hackathons for students, and that is something that needs to be changed. Our idea is to host a monthly hackathon with a different theme each month. One month it can be for ocean science and ocean projects, while another month it can be a computer science hackathon, and possibly a medical science hackathon. These hackathons will serve as a great place for students who have ideas in each of these disciples to come together and work on them 

Events and coferences are in our long term plan, but we definitely plan on hosting at least one big event a year to showcase the amazing students who have come up with innovative ideas for each year.

= Strategy #4 - Co-curricular Record (Design Thinking & Lean Methodology) =
We proposing to have Design Thinking & Lean Methodology offered as official co-curricular record to motivate students to get introduced to the entrepreneurial mindset. This would serve as an ideal channel to non-invasively encourage students to get involved with entrepreneurship on the campus.

Hackamarine is going to be an annual event held at Dalhousie University, a school well known for its world-class Marine & Oceanography programs. This is a cross-faculty event aiming to bring talent from various fields to work on major problems in Oceans & Marine Sciences. The winning teams took home a cumulative total of $5,000 in prizes.

= OVERVIEW =
Dalhousie University is located in the heart of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Local startup ecosystem in Halifax is still at its growing stage. There have been several champions working on developing the ecosystem, but only very recently has the government started to put more pressure on universities to promote entrepreneurship and facilitate deeper connection with the local startup community. Based on this initiative there was a group of political, academic and business leaders formed called oneNS Coalition. The mandate of oneNS Coalition is to instill further growth in the region and a 10 year plan for economic development and sustainability. One of the major topics is entrepreneurship and innovation.

Going through the training to become University Innovation Fellow, we had a great opportunity to get out of the building and talk to large amount of students and faculty member from across the campus and map out our campus landscape and recognize some of the major shortcomings that need to be addressed.
One of our findings was that students are not very aware of the resources and possiblities the E&I community can offer them at Dalhousie and Halifax. Although, some students are aware of some societies, events and spaces that are offered to them, majority of the students are in the mindset that the resources are mostly for business students at Dalhousie. This creates a lack of cross-faculty interaction under E&I.

The Sexton Engineering Campus at Dalhousie University is physically isolated from the main campus, Studley. This hinders the opportunity for full collaboration within the main campus. We believe that cross-faculty collaboration is essential for further growth of our startup ecosystem. A great example of this is a company called Spring Loaded, where three students from various faculties met in the Starting Lean Course, came up with an idea for a new generation of knee braces and rose over $1.8 million in seed financing to date.

Dalhousie Entrepreneurship Society (D.E.S.) has done tremendous work in the short amount of time they have had since the society was created. Most of the activities and events that we will host will be under D.E.S. because it will give us the platform and power to be in touch with students who have shown some interest in E&I. The D.E.S. will be our main hub that will allow us to get funding and reach the maximum number of students, stakeholder and investors. Our main goal this year is to get increased involvement from students, and for that, we need some funding to be able to bring value to them where they will have the incentive to join our society and take part in our activities.

We are very pleased with the initiative from the university and the province to create the Innovation Hub (IDEA Building) which is a Multipurpose building on Sexton Campus. As University Fellow candidates, we fully support this initiative and are willing to help to further promote it as well as help with information interviews, planning and further ideation on its programs and events.

As part of our initiative to get more students involved from all faculties, we will be hosting regular events and workshops for students to gain all the skills they need to run a startup. Hackamarine is going to be an annual event held at Dalhousie University, a school well known for its world-class Marine & Oceanography programs. This is a cross-faculty event aiming to bring talent from various fields to work on major problems in Oceans & Marine Sciences. The winning teams took home a cumulative total of $5,000 in prizes.

= OVERVIEW =
Dalhousie University is located in the heart of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Local startup ecosystem in Halifax is still at its growing stage. There have been several champions working on developing the ecosystem, but only very recently has the government started to put more pressure on universities to promote entrepreneurship and facilitate deeper connection with the local startup community. Based on this initiative there was a group of political, academic and business leaders formed called oneNS Coalition. The mandate of oneNS Coalition is to instill further growth in the region and a 10 year plan for economic development and sustainability. One of the major topics is entrepreneurship and innovation.

Going through the training to become University Innovation Fellow, we had a great opportunity to get out of the building and talk to large amount of students and faculty member from across the campus and map out our campus landscape and recognize some of the major shortcomings that need to be addressed.
One of our findings was that students are not very aware of the resources and possiblities the E&I community can offer them at Dalhousie and Halifax. Although, some students are aware of some societies, events and spaces that are offered to them, majority of the students are in the mindset that the resources are mostly for business students at Dalhousie. This creates a lack of cross-faculty interaction under E&I.

The Sexton Engineering Campus at Dalhousie University is physically isolated from the main campus, Studley. This hinders the opportunity for full collaboration within the main campus. We believe that cross-faculty collaboration is essential for further growth of our startup ecosystem. A great example of this is a company called Spring Loaded, where three students from various faculties met in the Starting Lean Course, came up with an idea for a new generation of knee braces and rose over $1.8 million in seed financing to date.

Dalhousie Entrepreneurship Society (D.E.S.) has done tremendous work in the short amount of time they have had since the society was created. Most of the activities and events that we will host will be under D.E.S. because it will give us the platform and power to be in touch with students who have shown some interest in E&I. The D.E.S. will be our main hub that will allow us to get funding and reach the maximum number of students, stakeholder and investors. Our main goal this year is to get increased involvement from students, and for that, we need some funding to be able to bring value to them where they will have the incentive to join our society and take part in our activities.

We are very pleased with the initiative from the university and the province to create the Innovation Hub (IDEA Building) which is a Multipurpose building on Sexton Campus. As University Fellow candidates, we fully support this initiative and are willing to help to further promote it as well as help with information interviews, planning and further ideation on its programs and events.

D.E.S serves as a vehicle to deliver our strategic student priorities and initiatives.

We are building a structure for our society so the new executives for the years to come can have a base to rely on. It is important for us not to just start a society but to also keep it alive and pass it on to other new executives who can take our roles and keep growing it as time goes by. This will be done through getting a ot of people involved with our events and setting guidlines and goals for us to achieve within a timeline. That way, students will take the society seriously and keep it going to achieve its goal of spreading innovation and entrepreneurship around campus.

By getting students involved in the Entrepreneurship Society we can ensure a sustainable future for the society. Society will keep growing as years go by and students will have time to become familiar with E&I before their graduation, which ultimately will increase the chances of more E&I student achievements at Dalhousie.

In addition, we are currently in the process of creating new By-Laws and a more comprehensive Constitution to enable us fully establish ourselves as the leading student-led organization promoting Entrepreneurship and Innovation on Campus and help us seek further funding opportunities.

= Strategy #3 - Collider Space in Library (Innovation space in Killam Library) =
The Collider is a multipurpose space in Killam Library for the collision of serendipitous ideas where from all academic and professional disciplines can come together to develop ideas and and create the future generation of innovators. The Collider connect students, local startups, mentors, investors and allows them to work together to help further grow the local startup ecosystem. Killam Library is the least-siloed space on the campus and place where people come together. It is in our best interest to help push this initiative to its full potential.

== Tactic no.1: Series of Hackathons, Events & Conferences ==

The Collider would serve a great venue for a series of student-led Hackathons, Events & Conferences. The university does not currently host any regular hackathons for students, and that is something that needs to be changed. Our idea is to host a monthly hackathon with a different theme each month. One month it can be for ocean science and ocean projects, while another month it can be a computer science hackathon, and possibly a medical science hackathon. These hackathons will serve as a great place for students who have ideas in each of these disciples to come together and work on them 

Events and coferences are in our long term plan, but we definitely plan on hosting at least one big event a year to showcase the amazing students who have come up with innovative ideas for each year.

= Strategy #4 - Co-curricular Record (Design Thinking & Lean Methodology) =
We proposing to have Design Thinking & Lean Methodology offered as official co-curricular record to motivate students to get introduced to the entrepreneurial mindset. This would serve as an ideal channel to non-invasively encourage students to get involved with entrepreneurship on the campus.

This is a cross-faculty event aiming to bring talent from various fields to work on major problems in Oceans & Marine Sciences. The winning teams took home a cumulative total of $5,000 in prizes.

= OVERVIEW =
Dalhousie University is located in the heart of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Local startup ecosystem in Halifax is still at its growing stage. There have been several champions working on developing the ecosystem, but only very recently has the government started to put more pressure on universities to promote entrepreneurship and facilitate deeper connection with the local startup community. Based on this initiative there was a group of political, academic and business leaders formed called oneNS Coalition. The mandate of oneNS Coalition is to instill further growth in the region and a 10 year plan for economic development and sustainability. One of the major topics is entrepreneurship and innovation.

Going through the training to become University Innovation Fellow, we had a great opportunity to get out of the building and talk to large amount of students and faculty member from across the campus and map out our campus landscape and recognize some of the major shortcomings that need to be addressed.
One of our findings was that students are not very aware of the resources and possiblities the E&I community can offer them at Dalhousie and Halifax. Although, some students are aware of some societies, events and spaces that are offered to them, majority of the students are in the mindset that the resources are mostly for business students at Dalhousie. This creates a lack of cross-faculty interaction under E&I.

The Sexton Engineering Campus at Dalhousie University is physically isolated from the main campus, Studley. This hinders the opportunity for full collaboration within the main campus. We believe that cross-faculty collaboration is essential for further growth of our startup ecosystem. A great example of this is a company called Spring Loaded, where three students from various faculties met in the Starting Lean Course, came up with an idea for a new generation of knee braces and rose over $1.8 million in seed financing to date.

Dalhousie Entrepreneurship Society (D.E.S.) has done tremendous work in the short amount of time they have had since the society was created. Most of the activities and events that we will host will be under D.E.S. because it will give us the platform and power to be in touch with students who have shown some interest in E&I. The D.E.S. will be our main hub that will allow us to get funding and reach the maximum number of students, stakeholder and investors. Our main goal this year is to get increased involvement from students, and for that, we need some funding to be able to bring value to them where they will have the incentive to join our society and take part in our activities.

= Strategy #1 - Connecting Engineering Students with the rest of the campus =
We are very pleased with the initiative from the university and the province to create the Innovation Hub (IDEA Building) which is a Multipurpose building on Sexton Campus. As University Fellow candidates, we fully support this initiative and are willing to help to further promote it as well as help with information interviews, planning and further ideation on its programs and events.

D.E.S plans to organize a series of workshops and events that facilitates the free flow of ideas and networking between the Sexton Engineering Campus and rest of the faculties at Dalhousie University. Yaser Alkayale originally from Syria, currently living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada studying computer science <span class="details" style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; display: inline-block;">at Dalhousie University. He is very interested in entrepreneurship as he believes it is what builds the future. Yaser comes from an entrepreneurial family that has been running businesses for decades. He was introduced to business and entrepreneurship at a very young age and fell in love in management and customer service. When Yaser moved to Canada in grade six, he was very passionate to continue his education and enrol in computer science which was also a passion of his. He graduated high school at the age of 16 and enrolled in computer science at Dalhousie University as a Seymour scholar. He is currently a second year computer science student, doing a minor in management and working towards an honours thesis with a specialization in network security. Yaser was the Schulich Leader of his high school and holds many leadership positions at Dalhousie. The University Innovation program is allowing him to use his skills and experience to cause some real change around campus which he has always dreamt of causing. He is very passionate about the program and believes that with hard work and dedication, he can get anything done.

The Sexton Engineering Campus at Dalhousie University is physically isolated from the main campus. This hinders the opportunity for full collaboration within the main campus. We believe that cross-faculty collaboration is essential for further growth of our startup ecosystem. A great example of this is a company called Spring Loaded, where three students from various faculties met in the Starting Lean Course, came up with an idea for a new generation of knee braces and raised over $1.8 million in seed financing to date.

This is a cross-faculty event aiming to bring talent from various fields to work on major problems in Oceans & Marine Sciences. The winning teams will take home a cumulative total of $5,000 in prizes. This is a great opportunity for students to connect with industry experts, potential employers, and other professionals in the (Oceans and Marine) field. In addition, they will receive mentoring from top professors in Management, Life Sciences, Marine programs, Engineering and Computer Science.

Dalhousie Entrepreneurship Society (DES) has done tremendous work in the short amount of time they have had since the society was created. Most of the activities and events that we will host will be under DES because it will give us the platform and power to be in touch with students who have show some interest in I&E. The DES will be our main hub that will allow us to get funding and reach the maximum number of students, stakeholder and investors. Our main goal this year is to get increased involvement from students, and for that, we need some funding to be able to bring value to them where they will have the incentive to join our society and take part in our activities.

Our main issue around campus right now is to to get the word out and to get students involved with entrepreneurship and to pursue their ideas. After a lot of customer discover, we find that a newsletter to get the word out would be the ideal way to let students, faculty and alumni know about our activities and events that we are hosting. To get people to sign up for our newsletter, we will host regular draws for wearables to give incentive to students to give us their contact information so we can keep them posted. To get the word out at the start, we will set tables around the main and Campus campuses at Dalhousie to get students aware of our newsletter and society.

As part of our initiative to get more students involved from all faculties, we will be hosting regular events and workshops for students to gain all the skills they need to run a startup. These workshops have to be regular so students get to know the schedule and come as they have available time. The workshops will be hosted by guest speakers and facilitated by volunteers. The topics we wish to cover include coding for beginners, design, making effective phone calls, and much more.

We want to challenge the idea that hackathons are only tech-related. In order to get students from all backgrounds and faculties involved then we have to host hackathons for different disciplines like a hackathon for computer science, one for health sciences and another for ocean science. DES started the first student-led hackathon for marine science called Hackamarine, and it was very successful. Our plan is to keep hackamarine running annually and get other monthly hackathons and call it the Dalhousie Hackathon Series (DHS). We will partner with different organizations and faculties to ensure the success of each and every hackathon.

The Sexton campus has always been secluded from the Dalhousie main campus where most of the activities take place, but our plan is to change that. There are a lot of very bright engineering students that have many ideas and the skills to execute them, but are not given the tools to do so. Through our long term plan and DES, our plan is to keep students from the Sexton campus up-to-date with all of our workshops and events so they stay involved with the other students. We will also hold some of our events on the Sexton campus so students find the convenience and start attending our events.

Dalhousie University is located in the heart of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Local startup ecosystem is still in its growing stage. There have been several champions working on developing the ecosystem, but only very recently has the government started to put more pressure on universities to promote entrepreneurship and facilitate deeper connection with the local startup community. Based on this initiative there was a group of political, academic and business leaders formed called oneNS Coalition. I am very interested in entrepreneurship as I believe it is what builds the future.I come from an entrepreneurial family that has been running businesses for decades. I was introduced to business and entrepreneurship at a very young age and fell in love in management and customer service. When I moved to Canada in grade six, I was very passionate to continue my education and enrol in computer science which was also a passion of mine. I graduated high school at the age of 16 and enrolled in computer science at Dalhousie University as a Seymour scholar. I am currently a second year computer science student, doing a minor in management and working towards an honours thesis with a specialization in network security.I was nominated as the Schulich Leader of my school and hold many leadership positions at Dalhousie. The University Innovation program is allowing me to use my skills and experience to cause some real change around campus which I have always dreamt of causing. Startup weekend is a fantastic event happening around campus twice a year which gets students from different disciplines working together on bright new ideas. It is led by the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship and managed by faculty and volunteers with the centre.

Hackamarine is a student led hackathon focused on marine and oceanography which allows allows students to work on their ideas and bring them to life. The event has much suport from the oceanography department and the faculty of management which got a lot of students involved and interacting together to work on their ideas.

Dalhousie University's I&E ecosystems is still in its growing stage. Based on this initiative there was a "Now or Never Report" released by the chair of the One Nova Scotia Commision Ray Ivany. One of the major topics in this report is entrepreneurship and innovation. Our president Dr. Richard Florizone is very involved with this initiative and strongly advocates entrepreneurship and innovation as one of the top priorities for the university. As a result from this growing interest in I&E, the Faculty of Engineering announced a project called Innovation Hub (IDEA Building) which is a multipurpose building on Sexton Campus that would serve as a hub for innovation on Sexton Campus. E-corps is another great initiative by Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship to help researchers commercialize their reserch by applying lean methodology and design thinking frameworks and providing them with small seed capital to build their minimal viable products. There is also an initiative to introduce an Entrepreneurship Certificate across faculties.

Some faculty have been very interested in developing the I&E in the student body. For example, a new course has been started for rapid prototyping in the forth year level. It is considered a computer science credit, but is open to students of other faculties. Courses like this are constantly being developed by different faculty members all around campus. Doctor Fiona Black is also launching a program for certification in "creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship" to provide students from all faculties with the ooportunity to add entrepreneurship to their degree. The certificate name starts with the word "creativity" because it is a ver neutral word where students from all faculties can see themselves doing. It comprises of both for-credit courses and extracurricular work that students have to do in order to be accredited with the certificate. It is a greatinnitiative to allow students to achieve work a little bit outside of their field and allow them to bring their bright ideas and pursue them.

Industry Liaison and Innovation (ILI) manages and facilitates collaborations between companies and university researchers, commercializes research at Dalhousie University, and assists in the creation of spin-off ventures.

ShiftKey Labs Sandbox is a workspace open to all students, located in Golberg Computer Science Building. ShiftKey Labs recently organized a hackathon event regarding sustainability called Smart Energy App Challenge.

IDEA Sandbox where IDEA is "standing for “Innovative Design and Entrepreneurship Academy” is a collaborative initiative between Faculty of Engineering, the Rowe School of Business and NSCAD University.

Cultiv8 is anAgricultural Sandbox (workspace) located in the MacRae Library on the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro. Incollaboration with NNCE's LaunchDal, Cultiv8 organized a first-of-its-kind Startup Weekend in Truro focusing on agriculture and food.

Volta Labs is a local workspace for early-stage startups that holds its tenants and network members accountable with a strong mentorship and peer-to-peer validation which help companies grow and scale faster. Volta also provides students with the ability to register for Volta network membership to stay connected to all events and offer them useful discounts for startups from companies such as Amazon or Hubspot.

The Technology Innovation Centre, run by the local venture capital group Innovacorps, provides local startups with multipurpose space off campus. Innovacorps organizes a biennial I3 Competition which is open to all students with early-stage startups or ideas to compete for over $900,000 in prizes across Nova Scotia.

The event has much suport from the oceanography department and the faculty of management which got a lot of students involved and interacting together to work on their ideas.

Dalhousie University's I&E ecosystems is still in its growing stage. There have been several champions working on developing the ecosystem, but only very recently has the government started to put more pressure on universities to promote entrepreneurship. There is a group of local political, academic and business leaders called oneNS Coalition. The mandate of oneNS Coalition is to instill further growth in the region and a 10 year plan for economic development and sustainability. Based on this initiative there was a "Now or Never Report" released by the chair of the One Nova Scotia Commision Ray Ivany. One of the major topics in this report is entrepreneurship and innovation. Our president Dr. Richard Florizone is very involved with this initiative and strongly advocates entrepreneurship and innovation as one of the top priorities for the university. As a result from this growing interest in I&E, the Faculty of Engineering announced a project called Innovation Hub (IDEA Building) which is a multipurpose building on Sexton Campus that would serve as a hub for innovation on Sexton Campus. E-corps is another great initiative by Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship to help researchers commercialize their reserch by applying lean methodology and design thinking frameworks and providing them with small seed capital to build their minimal viable products. There is also an initiative to introduce an Entrepreneurship Certificate across faculties.

Some faculty have been very interested in developing the I&E in the student body. For example, a new course has been started for rapid prototyping in the forth year level. It is considered a computer science credit, but is open to students of other faculties. Courses like this are constantly being developed by different faculty members all around campus. Doctor Fiona Black is also launching a program for certification in "creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship" to provide students from all faculties with the ooportunity to add entrepreneurship to their degree. The certificate name starts with the word "creativity" because it is a ver neutral word where students from all faculties can see themselves doing. It comprises of both for-credit courses and extracurricular work that students have to do in order to be accredited with the certificate. It is a greatinnitiative to allow students to achieve work a little bit outside of their field and allow them to bring their bright ideas and pursue them.

Innovacorps' Early Stage Commercialization Fund (ESCF)assists and supports the academic community in the pursuit of entrepreneurial opportunities. The purpose of ESCF is to provide support for projects demonstrating readiness to advance a technology that has achieved, or is close to achieving, a prototype/proof-of-concept stage and is approaching market readiness with a possibility of attracting industry partners and/or investment. The prospect of generating a new revenue stream must also be apparent.
