<div>William McMullen is a sophomore Mechanical Engineer at Santa Clara University, located in the heart of California's Silicon Valley. Hailing from Marin County, CA, Will is an avid sailor, musician, and self-proclaimed maker. When he's not found in the Maker Lab, you can find him on his front porch playing guitar or mandolin, working on electronic music production in his bedroom, or planning new projects with his friends. Will is conversationally proficient in Mandarin Chinese, and is an experienced and certified instructor, with 6+ years of experience coaching sailing to kids age 8-19 of all skill levels. </div><div><br/></div><div>As the Vice President of Santa Clara Innovation and Design, Will is currently working to apply his engineering studies to pursuits in Human-Centered Design and Entrepreneurship, striving to work on identifying and tackling the problems people face on a daily basis. <span id="docs-internal-guid-4ea59471-ec18-88e3-205f-1cfb80e7531b"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Santa Clara University has a huge amount of resources for all students who are interested in entrepreneurship and innovation, however, not many students are enrolled in these programs.  There seems to be a rather large disconnect between the students and the programs.  This is not for a lack of trying.  Many organizations try very hard to organize to students, but there are not very good channels for connecting the students to their desired program.  Sure, there are bulletin boards all around campus, and emails that go out, but most students ignore both of these methods.  There needs to be a better way to reach a larger amount of students.  </span></span>

In the school of Engineering, there is a weekly email sent out that is hand-crafted every Sunday night that lists out most of the events that will be happening that week. Club meetings, Maker Lab events, workshops, and many others are listed off in this email- but in the eyes of many, it comes across as almost "spammy". Most notably, not all engineers are interested in all disciplines of engineering, so they need to sort through dozens of items in order to find one they might be interested in. Along those same lines, the Business and Arts/Sciences schools appear to lack anything close to this, and students have to be completely on top of the hundreds of emails they receive each week just to see what they’re actually interested in.</span></span>

Through Camino, club leaders, event organizers, and school administrators could communicate resources directly to interested students by publishing announcements about events when they are announced, directly messaging students to work out questions or RSVPs, and automatically add the event dates, times, and details to the students’ Google calendars. Students would sign up for which “groups” they would be interested in, whether they be Entrepreneurship, Art, Career Preparation, whatever it might be, and only receive notifications for those interests. It would be much more streamlined and direct than our current means of communication, and also helps grey out the boundaries between schools.</span></span>

Therefore by combining them all into a 4-unit class would solve this problem. A problem that hasn’t been resolved yet is the fact that these classes are traditionally at odd times and are hard to fit in the schedule. If the classes were all a part of the same class it wouldn’t have to be squeezed in eliminating the potential to take other classes. The largest benefit of these classes being in line so they can build off each other, and come together in a big final project that has a real world component.</span></span>

A problem with these classes is that they don’t satisfy any requirement, are offered at odd times, and they are only worth one unit. This makes it so students can't or don’t want to take them. Therefore by combining them all into a 4-unit class would solve this problem. A problem that hasn’t been resolved yet is the fact that these classes are traditionally at odd times and are hard to fit in the schedule. If the classes were all a part of the same class it wouldn’t have to be squeezed in eliminating the potential to take other classes. The largest benefit of these classes being in line so they can build off each other, and come together in a big final project that has a real world component.</span></span>

There are also many events run through the school such as the KEEN Entrepreneurial Mindset Challenge and the SCID Designathon.</span></span>

<span id="docs-internal-guid-c45692d3-29dc-89dc-f72a-a43bcbf7598c"><span style="font-size: 15px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">Part of Santa Clara being in the Silicon Valley means that a lot of the professors come from entrepreneurial positions.  Many teachers in the business school teach with the entrepreneurial mindset, and give real world examples from their own experiences.  Many faculty also have important relationships with start up companies and encourage these companies to come speak on campus.  Professors also get many grants that the hand off to students to encourage entrepreneurship.  For example in 2008, the engineering school was given a very large grant to grow the entrepreneurial opportunities on campus, and that they have.  Every single senior must create their own design product, considering many entrepreneurial ideals.  </span></span>

<span id="docs-internal-guid-c45692d3-29dc-89dc-f72a-a43bcbf7598c"><span style="font-size: 15px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship on campus facilitates the transfer of technology to students.  It runs various programs and brings speakers on campus all in the name of entrepreneurship.  The center provides a network of connections to various companies and technologies so the students can best flourish in the entrepreneurial mindset.  Technology is also encouraged in the Maker Lab at Santa Clara University, where any student who goes through training can use the lab as much as they wish and create anything they want there.  This very much encourages the creative mindset on campus.  </span></span>

<span id="docs-internal-guid-c45692d3-29dc-89dc-f72a-a43bcbf7598c"><span style="font-size: 15px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">Santa Clara very much encourages its students to aid in regional and local economic efforts.  One very integral way is through the many jobs that Santa Clara University supplies the area with.  Students are given very many opportunities in the area and often stay to work in the area.  The school also runs collaborations with quite a few businesses in the area.  An example of this is the collaboration with NASA and the engineering school, in which many students can work.  The school also encourages its students to be socially responsible in all things including promoting charitable programs in dorms, and even requiring a class that works with some kind of charity.  Santa Clara very much cares and utilizes the surrounding area in a beneficial way.</span></span>

The separation that your organization will get from your superseding institution will allow you to have much more freedom for further development, but also can create funding conflicts, so connections to corporate sponsors is often essential. So long as you end up with a well structured organization that shows potential, your institution will be plenty approving.</span></span>

Individual motivation can easily decline over time if left unregulated so it is very important to talk with students as to why they may be losing interest. Balancing workload and results is a very tough game to play, but as a general rule, it is better to have large projects accomplished over the course of a quarter or potentially even the whole year than to force things to be done in a week’s worth of workshops. This structure encourages the most eager students will work above and beyond the call of duty, and thus gets students naturally involved and intrigued to help lead as the years go by.</span></span>

Promoting a business pitch or product idea is frightening enough on its own, but taking the next steps and putting in a large amount of time and effort into developing your own idea that certainly may, and statistically will fail… now that is a frightening prospect, especially to college students who already have plenty on their plate. In order to keep your students involved regardless of the potential of failure is to encourage them to live by the motto that </span><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">failure is, in a way, success- you will learn and succeed from those failings</span><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">. One way to do this is to have meetings focused around failure, where students can learn from professional examples of failed ventures to break the ice, and learn how to embrace their own failures and discuss them with the larger group, in order to identify their shortcomings and learn how not to run into those roadblocks next time around.</span></span>

It is also often a good idea to get valuable insight from faculty who may have experience developing similar programs in the past. They have also learned from these developments, and will apply their new knowledge of how to deal with shortcomings when they assist you in development as well.</span></span>

Talking with your administration at the most basic level and inquiring as to where and why there may be a disconnect will improve their degree of utility and can fundamentally increase your venture accelerator’s success.</span></span>
