Victoria Cox is a University Innovation Fellow at York College of Pennsylvania in York, PA, USA. At YCP, she is pursuing a B.A. in Mass Communication as well as a B.A. in Public Relations, with a Speech Communication Minor. Along with her academic endeavors, Victoria actively engages in several extracurricular activities at York College. She is an Eisenhart Scholar, Student Ambassador, Orientation Leader, and sister of Phi Sigma Sigma. Victoria is also involved with York's theatre department and is the Social Media Chair of WVYC, York College's radio station. 

Originally from a small town in Southern New Jersey, community is a big part of Victoria's life. In high school, Victoria held the pageant title for her town and worked closely with town officials, volunteering at community events and attending town hall meetings. She has been fortunate enough to be able to continue her love of community and service while at York College, volunteering to teach an after school dance program for elementary students, working with a college preparedness outreach program, and coordinating future projects at a local school.

As a part of her scholars program, Victoria was enrolled in a design thinking first year seminar course that completely changed the way she viewed creative thinking and problem solving. The techniques and processes that she learned in that course are things that have stayed with her and greatly impact the way she views every day life. Victoria has a strong belief in the design thinking method and it's ability to get to the route of the problem to create an innovative, useful, and possibly even revolutionary solution. Keeping this into consideration, Victoria wants to have a positive impact on higher education. She has been lucky enough to have access to enlightening and life changing courses, (such as design thinking) as well as Maker Spaces on and off campus, but she knows that students everywhere do not have those luxuries. Victoria believes students should have more opportunities to create, explore, develop, test, and learn - not what is just required of their major studies, but of what interests them as individuals in conjunction with their field of study. As Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun," and students should be able to explore education in a way that will produce never before seen, revolutionary results.

Promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship:

York College of PA offers various experiential courses. It starts the first semester with the First Year Seminar (FYS) class. This course serves as a hands on jump start for the students’ college careers such as Entrepreneurial Thinking. The constellation program builds off of this first class. This is York’s general education program and provides specific areas of study such as Sustainability but with a multidisciplinary curriculum. The Kinsley Engineering center serves as a place for product or technology development. The labs are only available to engineers. There is a makerspace being built by the Graham Innovation Scholars to promote innovation and entrepreneurship outside of the engineering center. The Graham Scholars also have created a student business to promote the entrepreneurship effort the program intends to accomplish. The engineering programs at York require three co-op semesters to graduate emphasizing entrepreneurship and business. The art department offers partnerships with the college’s art studio, Marketview Arts. Student art gets put on display and allows art students to explore the spirit of entrepreneurship in their field. Nursing students partner with local hospitals to gain hands on experience during their clinicals.
 
Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship:

Faculty Innovation

The Center for Teaching and Learning at York College awards grants for faculty to provide them with opportunities to receive funding for resources towards developing innovative pedagogies. Grants from this center will allow all applicable faculty to test new teaching strategies, support student learning outcomes, replicate results in multiple disciplines, and enhance faculty understanding across all departments of new teaching methods. These grants are awarded for twice a year. The faculty proposals must include a problem that needs fixing, the method of innovative teaching, the expected impact of the program, and the evaluation of the program. The grants could be used to purchase and teach new technology or sponsor workshops or guest speakers. Previous grants have been awarded to faculty to fund Poverty Simulations to sensitize participants to uncomfortable situations. Our grant program is the most prominent and successful faculty funding program on campus.  
 
Actively supporting the university technology transfer function:

Tech transfer is not available at York College.
 
Facilitating university-industry collaboration:

York College of PA has an engineering co-op program with many business partnerships. These include and are not limited to: Johnson Controls, Voith Hydro, and Harley Davidson.  In addition to engineering, industry contacts exist for nursing majors who do clinicals. For those majors which are not specified, the Alumni Relations Office and many schools have contacts in various industries.

In the engineering department, there are many adjunct professors who work in the industry as optics engineering, consulting engineerings, etc. In nursing, many classes are taught by local nurse practitioners.

Engaging with regional and local economic development efforts:

York College of Pennsylvania has multiple programs and departments that relate to the continuous furthering of innovation in the market. First, the Kinsley Engineering Center. This falls in the engineering department and is filled with machinery that allow engineers to explore and tinker, for example, there are multiple oscilloscopes and a tensile tester. The Stabler Department of Nursing has cutting edge simulation labs that mirror hospital facilities as nurses would see them in the work force. Also, the J.D. Brown Wet lab space that is in the city of York owned by the college and is a space for anyone to use as a start-up business space. The Graham Innovation Scholars is an application based program that helps accepted students mentor students to utilize innovation and entrepreneurial skill sets. The campus counseling services are available free to any student that attends York College. Counseling services include; one on one counseling, group counseling, referrals to local resources, all at no  additional cost. There is also a Career Development center that works one on one to polish resumes, host networking events on campus, does mock interviews, real interviews, as well as mini internship fairs and career planning workshops. This is a resource for all students attending York College to utilize at no additional cost.

What Exactly is a Business Makerspace?
 A business makerspace is a place where the focus is on the structure and execution of anything business related. A key feature is an emphasis on the Business Model Canvas. The business makerspace should have a variety of tools to help the ideation process, such as large whiteboards, conference tables, and plenty of sticky notes to help people collaborate with each other on how to structure and execute their businesses. Creating a Business Model Canvas is just the start and further steps can be explored cooperatively such as finding funding, researching, prototyping, surveying, acquiring resources and anything else that fits into the business ecosystem. A business makerspace is a perfect complement to a fabrication centric makerspace such as a 3D printing lab. A person/group may have a great new prototype for a product, but not know where to turn next to make it marketable. Well, this is where the business makerspace comes in. The business makerspace is used as the catalyst to take new innovations into the real world by having a well thought out business model that will take them and their idea further than just the prototyping stage. Assessing the Need for a Business Makerspace When first learning about a makerspace and all that it entails, it is extremely easy to become unbelievably excited and want to begin working on one right away. However, one must remember that for a business makerspace (or any makerspace for that matter) to have a true impact, it must be designed for and around those who will be creating in it. A good way to ensure that this is done correctly is to go back to our design thinking routes of empathy interviews. Example ideas of how to assess the need for a business makerspace on your campus are:<ul style="margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;">
<li>Conducting a survey</li>
<li>Inform students about the difference between a library or study room and a makerspace</li>
<li>Gather early opinions on what students envision a space like this being like</li>
<li>Ask students how likely they would be to use a space like this</li>
<li>Involve students who are very interested in the planning process - there is strength in numbers!</li>
</ul>
 Gaining Faculty SupportIt’s necessary for the designer to consider what they would need in their argument to convince administrators that the business makerspace is of critical importance. Student support is a crucial first step, but faculty support is just as important too. A faculty member’s top priority is teaching their student, so if they show support for the project, administration will know that the space will be a positive learning experience for their students. Creating a Plan Interpret the meaning of what the students said. Unless the students stated specific examples of what the space could utilize, it would be up to the designer to decide what the students sound like they need. For example, if a number of students stated they wanted an open space to work, that could mean that the room is initially populated with plenty of chairs and tables, but they’re all easily mobile to create the open space they desired. Everything needs to be planned out, from use of floor and wall space to where the electrical outlets will be. Listen to what they want out of the space, put yourself in their shoes, and then “walk around” your completed makerspace to imagine what they would expect throughout the space. The designer can help themself to plan the specifics by hosting an innovation session using post-it notes. Simply start writing down anything the students could possibly want to see, post them, and then see what sticks afterwards. Use these strategies to plan the entire student’s experience inside of your business makerspace. Creating the Space Developing an adequate space to carry out the makerspace is essential: the specific tools, materials and furniture that it has to offer will have profound repercussions on the quality and thoroughness of the work produced. The different types of makerspaces demand different tools. Even within a particular type of makerspace –in this case a business makerspace– there are multiple variables to be considered depending on the funding and what the participants want to see. This last bit of data can be quantified from the surveys conducted on the potential users of the makerspace, prior to its launch (as discussed in Assessing the Need for a Business Makerspace). It is important to imagine the environment they would be immersed in, as well as the energy inputs that they would need. After collecting all the qualitative information, there are a few thing to keep an eye out for. First, the space. As the name implies, this is the heart of the makerspace. Try reaching out to the university’s institutions: they can be of great help in providing the funds to acquire a new space, or they might even offer an adequately suited space that happened to be available. Either way, decide upon a private area where the environment pushes people towards innovation, yet conserving a certain degree of professionalism. Big round conference tables do the trick, especially when paired with high chairs so people are always in a half-sitting half-standing position; in other words, comfortable, but ready to get on the move. Get whiteboards –lots of them– because you can never really tell when the next game-changing idea is going to pop in. Tables with stainless-steel surfaces work great for this matter. Finally, get graphical. Sticky notes are a great way to convey the relevant information in a way that it really sticks to your mind. Always Making Adjustments The technological, social, and curricular changes that occur on college campuses are so rapid that they can almost feel continuous at times. Even after all of the planning, surveying, prototyping, building, and creation of what seems to be the perfect makerspace, some things just might not work. Now, this could be something as simple as the long high table working best in a place other than where it was originally envisioned, or a $2,000USD 3D printer that you purchased for the space being used incorrectly and breaking within a week of the space opening. Of course these things may be frustrating and disappointing, but as innovators we should always remember to learn from failures, no matter how big or small, and work to find a solution. Some solutions will be easy to see, such as rearranging furniture or training students on how to properly use equipment before they can begin working with it, but some may require profound and thoughtful conversations to creatively reach an answer. A big thing to remember is that things are always changing, and that is okay!Equipment will get outdated or overused, never before thought of needs will emerge, and with each incoming class of innovators that will use the space, the dynamic will grow and change. A well designed makerspace will be accepting of these changes and understanding that true innovation will never be set in stone or have a glass ceiling of what can and can’t be achieved. Creating the Space Developing an adequate space to carry out the makerspace is essential: the specific tools, materials and furniture that it has to offer will have profound repercussions on the quality and thoroughness of the work produced. The different types of makerspaces demand different tools. Even within a particular type of makerspace –in this case a business makerspace– there are multiple variables to be considered depending on the funding and what the participants want to see. This last bit of data can be quantified from the surveys conducted on the potential users of the makerspace, prior to its launch (as discussed in Assessing the Need for a Business Makerspace). It is important to imagine the environment they would be immersed in, as well as the energy inputs that they would need. After collecting all the qualitative information, there are a few thing to keep an eye out for. First, the space. As the name implies, this is the heart of the makerspace. Try reaching out to the university’s institutions: they can be of great help in providing the funds to acquire a new space, or they might even offer an adequately suited space that happened to be available. Either way, decide upon a private area where the environment pushes people towards innovation, yet conserving a certain degree of professionalism. Big round conference tables do the trick, especially when paired with high chairs so people are always in a half-sitting half-standing position; in other words, comfortable, but ready to get on the move. Get whiteboards –lots of them– because you can never really tell when the next game-changing idea is going to pop in. Tables with stainless-steel surfaces work great for this matter. Finally, get graphical. Sticky notes are a great way to convey the relevant information in a way that it really sticks to your mind. Always Making Adjustments The technological, social, and curricular changes that occur on college campuses are so rapid that they can almost feel continuous at times. Even after all of the planning, surveying, prototyping, building, and creation of what seems to be the perfect makerspace, some things just might not work. Now, this could be something as simple as the long high table working best in a place other than where it was originally envisioned, or a $2,000USD 3D printer that you purchased for the space being used incorrectly and breaking within a week of the space opening. Of course these things may be frustrating and disappointing, but as innovators we should always remember to learn from failures, no matter how big or small, and work to find a solution. Some solutions will be easy to see, such as rearranging furniture or training students on how to properly use equipment before they can begin working with it, but some may require profound and thoughtful conversations to creatively reach an answer. A big thing to remember is that things are always changing, and that is okay!Equipment will get outdated or overused, never before thought of needs will emerge, and with each incoming class of innovators that will use the space, the dynamic will grow and change. A well designed makerspace will be accepting of these changes and understanding that true innovation will never be set in stone or have a glass ceiling of what can and can’t be achieved. Victoria Cox is currently in training to become a University Innovation Fellow at York College of Pennsylvania in York, PA, USA. At YCP, she is pursuing a B.A. in Mass Communication as well as a B.A. in Public Relations, with a Speech Communication Minor. Along with her academic endeavors, Victoria actively engages in several extracurricular activities at York College. She is an Eisenhart Scholar, Student Ambassador, Orientation Leader, and sister of Phi Sigma Sigma. Victoria is also involved with York's theatre department and is the Social Media Chair of WVYC, York College's radio station. 

Originally from a small town in Southern New Jersey, community is a big part of Victoria's life. In high school, Victoria held the pageant title for her town and worked closely with town officials, volunteering at community events and attending town hall meetings. She has been fortunate enough to be able to continue her love of community and service while at York College, volunteering to teach an after school dance program for elementary students, working with a college preparedness outreach program, and coordinating future projects at a local school.

As a part of her scholars program, Victoria was enrolled in a design thinking first year seminar course that completely changed the way she viewed creative thinking and problem solving. The techniques and processes that she learned in that course are things that have stayed with her and greatly impact the way she views every day life. Victoria has a strong belief in the design thinking method and it's ability to get to the route of the problem to create an innovative, useful, and possibly even revolutionary solution. Keeping this into consideration, Victoria wants to have a positive impact on higher education. She has been lucky enough to have access to enlightening and life changing courses, (such as design thinking) as well as Maker Spaces on and off campus, but she knows that students everywhere do not have those luxuries. Victoria believes students should have more opportunities to create, explore, develop, test, and learn - not what is just required of their major studies, but of what interests them as individuals in conjunction with their field of study. As Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun," and students should be able to explore education in a way that will produce never before seen, revolutionary results.
