Priorities:Cooper Union Student Priorities

Tzavelisz:

The Cooper Union is a rapidly-developing ecosystem for entrepreneurship and innovation. The school is one of creators, something noticed and expanded upon by University Innovation Fellow Sharang Phadke. As an overview of the continuing plan for expanding this notion of creation on campus, the following six points will be the vision leading Cooper forward.

== Maker Space ==

*There is potential for using a space across the street from Cooper as a Maker Space, due to a connection with the new Dean of the Engineering School

*Currently in talks with professor Yash Risbud about making this happen (early stages)

*No current space open to students for easy prototyping and creation; labs are locked, and most students do not have access

*Would serve as a social hub beyond Frankie’s Kitchen, and would become a nurturing place for inter-school projects

== Art, Architecture and Engineering ==

*Move course locations to foster interaction
*Free up space in the curriculum to take courses in the other schools as electives

== Curriculum Restructuring ==

*Fewer credits, and less time, allocated to unnecessary Physics courses
*Eliminate Connect and Professional Development courses, and replace them with An Introduction to Creative Thinking and Problem Solving.

== Additional Courses in I&E, as well as Design ==

*Addition of a general I&E course open to all three schools
**Last year’s senior gift to Cooper Union was money to start a new course, which may not have been been used yet
*Intro to Design Thinking course as a potential alternative, due to Art and Architecture school’s hesitation surrounding art-for-profit. Design Thinking would likely draw a much more mixed and interactive crowd at Cooper

== Expansion of the idea behind NYU’s Demo Days at Cooper ==

*Create a regular event for create@cooper, which doesn't necessarily need a guest speaker or large overhead to hold

*This will ensure an active set of members who are inclined to attend larger events, beyond just the organizers and leaders

*Potentially integrate with Code Club’s Hack For Pizza event (demoing hardware and software projects)

== 1000 Pitches ==

*Former head of create@cooper, Sharang Phadke, had suggested that we hold an event called 1000 Pitches to get students thinking about inventions that they may have been considering making

*The event would last throughout the year, and culminate in a competition and award for the best pitches

= The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art =

The Cooper Union is a small college in the East Village of Manhattan that was founded by industrialist and entrepreneur Peter Cooper.  The Cooper Union is made up of three schools: The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, The School of Art, and The Albert Nerken School of Engineering. It aims to use intensive study in each of these three majors to foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

= Student Led Entrepreneurship  =

The main organization on campus for student entrepreneurship is create@cooper. This club runs regular events on campus such as guest speakers and short two hour tutorials on how to do something cool as well as the annual hackathon, “HackCooper”. Currently the club is mostly comprised of engineering students (the largest of the three schools that make up Cooper), however the student leadership of the club is reaching out to the other schools to improve their involvement with events such as a Design Hackathon. = Institutional Entrepreneurship =

Beyond classes that focus on design and innovation, the school has one leading program for entrepreneurship which takes place over the summer. This program, called Invention Factory, pays students to work in teams to create a patentable, novel, and innovative invention. This program started in the summer of 2013 and has since been appended by a program called Entrepreneur Factory which aims to bring these inventions to market. Entrepreneur Factory will be running for the first time in the summer of 2014.

= Interacting With Businesses and the Community =

Cooper Union is unique in that it is so small that many student projects that are ready to move beyond the classroom are further developed in a case by case basis. Students typically ask faculty members with whom they are close with to help out with any technical needs and the students maintain full rights over everything they develop while at the school. Many notable projects that developed into something greater have come from classes like "Engineering Design and Problem Solving", which is taken by all freshmen. A few examples of this are the Gaia Project, RAMESSES and SociaLite, all projects of Professor Toby Cumberbatch that benefit the local community and those in need.

Cooper is rapidly expanding its entrepreneurial efforts. Although the school is small and does not have abundant resources, a strong push is being made to bolster what is available as well as reinforce entrepreneurial education within the required curriculum.
