== Proposal #1: Creating a CAP class for all majors ==

Problem Statement: The University of Dayton likes to pride themselves as a school for innovation and entrepreneurship, however I&E is very secluded within the School of Engineering and the School of Business, making other majors feel excluded. 

Proposal: The University should create a CAP (Common Academic Program) class that incorporates design thinking for every major to take. This would expand the knowledge of I&E to not only a select few hundred people, but thousands across campus. 

Key Tactics: To complete this project and make a new CAP class for everyone, there are going to have to be a lot of small steps taken in order to complete the over all goal. 

#Create a one day activity around design thinking and run it over with team and mentour. Get feedback and make tweaks to the class.
#Meet with professors of every major and ask if you can do a "desgin class takeover day" and takeover there classes to teach design thinking. Have them complete activities that include design thinking. 
#Get feedback from both the professors as well as the students. 
#Make changes to what happened within the class and develop on a broader scale. 
#Hold events for all students to come and learn about design thinking and get feedback
#Develop a full semester course that deals with bringing together all majors to inspire I&E within every students
#Present idea of full course, with feedback from take over days to the CAP board and get feedback on how to better the entire course 

While this project will mainly be lead by me, I will need help from my other UIF fellows as well as getting together many people from different majors to see what they would like to have included within the class and how it may better prepare them for the furture. A big component to the success of my project will be Ian Sikora, as his idea is to hold a design thinking challenge day. I can observe and get feedback from this event and allow it to benefit the production of the class. 

== Proposal #2: Revamp of Up the Orgs ==

Moving forward from the prototype, we will need to implement steps that will take a couple of months to develop in order to complete the revamp of ‘Up the Orgs’. First, we will develop a list of key terms that would help describe the organizations on campus. Creating a list for clubs will identify core values in a organization that students would be interested in developing upon. The students’ interest can lead them into wanting to be involved in a club that further implements that passion for a key term,  such as “service-based”. Next, we will develop an online form that will list key terms for the clubs to fill out. With the help of the Center of Student Involvement, we will send these forms out and get feedback from each club. The general process for each club would ask them to select five key terms that describes their organization to avoid excessively selecting of key-terms, such as 30. After the results are in, we will go through and develop a survey that will help link students with clubs they can be interested in. For example, we will send a survey to students and have them pick 5 key terms they value or have a passion for. After they complete it, the survey will indicate the clubs that correlate to those key terms. On Fall 2019, we hope to have separated the key terms by specific days of the week. There will also be a developed map online that will have all of the organization on the main campus for the following week. The map will allow students to have an easier time finding and connect with organizations. In addition, it will allow club members to recruit individuals who have a passionate for their organization.  Once the first revamp is finished, I will witness and ask fellow students their intact of the new ‘Up the Orgs’. If there are any complaints multiple times, I will do my duty of making the revamp of ‘Up the Orgs’ better.

Problem Statement:

While the school focuses on bringing the I & E mindset to the schools of business and the school of engineering, the other academic departments are often being left out of these developments.

Proposal:

Create a yearly design-a-thon that is open to all students. Teaching everyone who attend about innovation through the practice of the design process in several creative scenarios.

Key Tactics: Identification, research, and development

1.)    Identify a facility member to sponsor the event and get it to be a University sanctioned event

2.)    Survey around campus to gauge interest in the event

3.)    Using data gathered from surveying, research locations that would be large enough for at least ten teams to gather, design, and prototype

4.)    Work with innovations teachers to develop a design thinking and design process lectures for non-engineering students

5.)    Create several scenarios that could be used for the competition

6.)    Research the price of crafts supplies

7.)    Apply for funding, as well as get a gift card for winning prize

8.)    Set a date for the event, and schedule the facility

9.)    Run the event, learn from it and improve.

== Proposal #4: TEDx on Campus ==

Background: TEDx“is an international community that organizes TED-style events anywhere and everywhere -- celebrating locally-driven ideas and elevating them to a global stage” according to Google’s main definition. I like TEDx because of the content they provide and for what they stand for. So many of their episodes incorporate multiple viewpoints for different subjects. Their videos can be inspiring, thoughtful, and can tach multiple things to an individual. With our goals on I&E, we hope to provide multiple episodes on I&E through their format.

Getting Started: To get started, we need a License for TEDx. Through their website, we can apply and try to get a License through them. Once we get a license, we can follow their rules and set up locations or times.

Goals:

#Get at least 50 people to an events
#Hold at least one event before we all goto Stanford and get inducted.
#Get at least a few people from every school at Dayton to be included in our process of holding a TEDx event.
#Get help from someone who has hosted a TEDx events

Who to talk to:

#People from other schools.
#People who have hosted TEDx events.
#People in the City of Dayton who would help those get into our session.

Deadlines:

#Our Trip to Stanford is in Marchish.
#We want a license by November 15th
#Want a committee for help by the end of our semester.
#Get Financing, publicity, and other needs by the End of January.
#Host the TEDx event by March. This gives us (hopefully) the entire month of February and March to get this done.

Problem Statement

Kettering Labs, or KL, is the engineering building at UD. Many students feel like it does not have a convenient place to study or do group work. The only public place for student use is a first floor lounge with furniture that is not suited for academic work.

Proposal

The basement of KL is virtually unused and contains many rooms that are large enough to be a group study space. I created a prototype floor plan using a central room and pictures of furniture found online, including team tables with presenting monitors, group standing desks, and modular couches. 

Feedback

The feedback I received for students was very positive. Most had no suggestions for changes besides minor tweaks to the furniture and requests for many outlets to be installed. Moving forward, I will be presenting to faculty and facilities managment to hear their feedback and to find out what the next steps would be to move this proposal forward.

Szafarskis1:

Sydney Szafarski is a University Innovation Fellow and an undergraduate student studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Dayton. Sydney is [[File:Sydney Szafarski2.jpg|thumb|Sydney Szafarski2.jpg]]originally from Cleveland, Ohio, where she has lived her whole life until 2017 when she moved to Dayton, Ohio for college. After many months of thought and her love for math and science, she chose her career path as an engineer to help better improve the world and solve problems. The University of Dayton is where she chose to continue and develop her engineering mindset. There, she was exposed to the University Innovation Fellows.

At the University of Dayton, Sydney is involved in many different clubs and organizations as well as holds a campus job. She has been involved in Phi Sigma Rho engineering sorority for one full semester where she continually develops her professional skills and broadens her network of people in the engineering field. Here she holds a small position and is looking forward to taking on bigger roles. In addition, she has a job in tutoring first year engineering students in their math and science courses. In her next two semesters she will be working for Dupont Chemical Company for her Cooperative-Education experience. Here, she will further develop her skills and apply her design thinking mindset in the field.

From a very young age, Sydney was always interested in building anything and trying to find solutions to problems that needed to be fixed. Growing up, she was very involved in athletics, winning many leadership awards and scholarships from them, as well as winning a state championship her freshman and senior year. In 2016, Sydney became a recipient of the Archie Griffin Leadership Award. Sydney has always been focused on building up ideas for everyone to be able to feel inclusive. On her campus, she is focused on building a better community upon each major and student at the university.

After the results are in, we will go through and develop a survey that will help link students with clubs they can be interested in. For example, we will send a survey to students and have them pick 5 key terms they value or have a passion for. After they complete it, the survey will indicate the clubs that correlate to those key terms. On Fall 2019, we hope to have separated the key terms by specific days of the week. There will also be a developed map online that will have all of the organization on the main campus for the following week. The map will allow students to have an easier time finding and connect with organizations. In addition, it will allow club members to recruit individuals who have a passionate for their organization.  Once the first revamp is finished, I will witness and ask fellow students their intact of the new ‘Up the Orgs’. If there are any complaints multiple times, I will do my duty of making the revamp of ‘Up the Orgs’ better.

Problem Statement:

While the school focuses on bringing the I & E mindset to the schools of business and the school of engineering, the other academic departments are often being left out of these developments.

Proposal:

Create a yearly design-a-thon that is open to all students. Teaching everyone who attend about innovation through the practice of the design process in several creative scenarios.

Key Tactics: Identification, research, and development

1.)    Identify a facility member to sponsor the event and get it to be a University sanctioned event

2.)    Survey around campus to gauge interest in the event

3.)    Using data gathered from surveying, research locations that would be large enough for at least ten teams to gather, design, and prototype

4.)    Work with innovations teachers to develop a design thinking and design process lectures for non-engineering students

5.)    Create several scenarios that could be used for the competition

6.)    Research the price of crafts supplies

7.)    Apply for funding, as well as get a gift card for winning prize

The University of Dayton currently has a [https://www.udayton.edu/research/tpo/index.php Technology Partnerships Office (TPO)] which is apart of the Office for Research. The main role of this department is managing university intellectual property (IP) through filing patents and licensing technology that is produced through the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI). Also, the TPO coordinates research agreements with industry and commercializing university inventions. While this office can provide limited advice to students who are pursing their own ventures, it mainly exists to support university owned internet protocol.

The college of Engineering has a strong Multidisciplinary Design program for senior Electrical and Mechanical engineering students. While most projects are industry sponsored, the Innovation Center will work with students who are interested in sponsoring their own projects. This two-part course provides students with mentoring through every step of the design process from ideation to prototyping and testing.

There are additional resources available to students pursing projects and ventures on their own time. The Connor Group Foundation Seed Investment Fund is a resource available through the school of Business that can provide seed funding to student ventures. Additionally, Flyer Consulting, which is another resource available through the school of Business, is a great resource to students seeking mentorship. A new resource available for students searching for startup funding is the Leonardo Enterprises. This resource adds support for technology based businesses for students and facuilty members.

University of Dayton collaborates with a variety of companies, and what makes them unique is the location of major companies located on campus including GE, Emerson Technologies, and Honda.  Each Company is involved on campus to serve as not only a physical representation of their connection to UD, but also as a method for students to get real world work experience much closer to campus.  Similarly, companies not located on campus also collaborate with the University of Dayton by hiring students for internships and co-ops through our cooperative education program.  In order to facilitate this process, UD hosts a large career fair twice a year, in which hundreds of companies attend with the intention of hiring interns, co-ops, as well as full-time employees.  All of these companies have a great repor with the University and its students, which is why several companies return every year with more opportunities and alumni exploiting the company because all UD students and alums are welcome to attend the fairs.  Also, companies that aren't able to attend these career fairs host workshops, meet-and-greets, and on-campus interviews throughout the year which all students are welcome to attend and go through for potential jobs. So, as you can see, the University of Dayton prides itself on preparing its students for post-graduation, and its collaboration with industry is a major reason why that's possible in today's world. 

Another major connection between the University and Industry is through the School of Engineering's Innovation Center. This center is tailored to Senior Design projects, where over 200 external industry clients have prompted real-world challenges for groups of students to "solve" over the course of a year. These solutions have reached client expectations 85% of the time because of the investment UD makes for legal, business, feasability counseling. Other innovation and design course have access to the Innovation Center. It provides spaces for collaboration space, workshop space, machine tools, testing equipment, and financial/legal/business resources. UD also provides organizations like Maker's Club and Leonardo Enterprises which help boost student innovation and hands on learning in the industry by providing tools suitable to the world around us. Maker's Club has tools and courses that are used in the process of making materials and working machines to help the engineer see through the design process. Leonardo Enterprises (just recently launched) helps students with interesting ideas to get funding and mentorship within the business launching process. Organizations like these only contribute more to the school and the future in society.

In the last decade, UD and the City of Dayton have rejuviated their focus on the importance of entreprenuership and innovation for the purpose of econmic growth in the city. One future project is renovating the Dayton Arcade to create an "Innovation Hub" downtown for students and local companies in the Dayton area.  Another future project is the transformation of 38-acres of land adjacent to UD's campus. The unversity has yet to reveal the plans for this property, but they informed students that it would be a "place that builds on Dayton's history of innovation and entrepreneurship and can propel the region's next wave of jobs and opportunity."

= '''Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts''' =

The University's latest economic development project was the decision to purchase the abandoned Dayton Fairgrounds land near our campus. They made this purchase with Premiere Health, and they have been involving the community of Greater Dayton in its decisions for the future of the property.

The City of Dayton Department of Economic Development offers a few different services to promote the growth of small businesses in downtown Dayton. They have a Small Business Advocate on staff who consults with start-ups and helps them get all of the necessary permits. The Department also recently created the Accelerate Dayton program that provides $10,000 awards to one start-up in each quadrant of the city per year.

Other organizations that support local economic development of small companies and students include the Dayton Diode, a for profit company, and the Dayton Development Coalition, whose board of trustees includes CEOs from local companies such as Fuyao Glass and the Kettering Health Network, as well as the University's President Spina.

Maker's Club has tools and courses that are used in the process of making materials and working machines to help the engineer see through the design process. The Connor Group Foundation Seed Investment Fund is a resource available through the school of Business that can provide seed funding to student ventures. Additionally, Flyer Consulting, which is another resource available through the school of Business, is a great resource to students seeking mentorship. 

= '''Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration''' =

University of Dayton collaborates with a variety of companies, and what makes them unique is the location of major companies located on campus including GE and Emerson Technologies.  These companies' location on campus serve as not only a physical representation of their connection to UD, but also as a method for students to get real world work experience much closer to campus.  Similarly, companies not located on campus also collaborate with the University of Dayton by hiring students for internships and co-ops through our cooperative education program.  In order to facilitate this process, UD hosts a career fair twice a year, in which hundreds of companies attend with the intention of hiring interns, co-ops, as well as full-time employees.  All of these companies have a great repor with the University and its students, which is why several companies return every year. All UD students and alums are welcome to attend the fairs.  Also, companies that aren't able to attend these career fairs host workshops, meet-and-greets, and on-campus interviews throughout the year which all students are welcome to attend.  As you can see, University of Dayton prides itself on preparing its students for post-graduation, and its collaboration with industry is a major reason why that's possible. 

Another major connection between the University and Industry is through the School of Engineering's Innovation Center. This center is tailored to Senior Design projects, where over 200 external industry clients have prompted real-world challenges for groups of students to "solve" over the course of a year. These solutions have reached client expectations 85% of the time because of the investment UD makes for legal, business, feasability counseling. Other innovation and design course have access to the Innovation Center. It provides spaces for collaboration space, workshop space, machine tools, testing equipment, and financial/legal/business resources.

In the last decade, UD and the City of Dayton have rejuviated their focus on the importance of entreprenuership and innovation for the purpose of econmic growth in the city. One future project is renovating the Dayton Arcade to create an "Innovation Hub" downtown for students and local companies in the Dayton area.  Another future project is the transformation of 38-acres of land adjacent to UD's campus. The unversity has yet to reveal the plans for this property, but they informed students that it would be a "place that builds on Dayton's history of innovation and entrepreneurship and can propel the region's next wave of jobs and opportunity."

= '''Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts''' =

The University's latest economic development project was the decision to purchase the abandoned Dayton Fairgrounds land near our campus. They made this purchase with Premiere Health, and they have been involving the community of Greater Dayton in its decisions for the future of the property.

The City of Dayton Department of Economic Development offers a few different services to promote the growth of small businesses in downtown Dayton. They have a Small Business Advocate on staff who consults with start-ups and helps them get all of the necessary permits. The Department also recently created the Accelerate Dayton program that provides $10,000 awards to one start-up in each quadrant of the city per year.

Other organizations that support local economic development of small companies and students include the Dayton Diode, a for profit company, and the Dayton Development Coalition, whose board of trustees includes CEOs from local companies such as Fuyao Glass and the Kettering Health Network, as well as the University's President Spina.
