== Collaboration Between Departments and Campuses ==

Something that everyone at Pepperdine can agree upon is the lack of collaboration in academics. It seems as though every department and campus (along with their resources) is isolated from the others. There are many ways different ways one can address and tackle this problem. But in light of our new Institute for Entertainment, Media, and Culture (IEMC), along with our small film program, UIF candiadtes Keeyana Kian and Moises Barba knew which direction they wanted to go in.

As film students, filmmakers, and representatives of the IEMC Innovation Catalyst Team, we wanted to utilize resources from the undergraduate and graduate schools, the business school, and the law school to completely reinnovate the film program at our school. While certainly promising with its many incredibly talented students, it is still not quite on par with the programs of other universities in the greater Los Angeles area. So for our prototype, we decided to create a theoretical dream major, Cinematic Arts, and its would-be curriculm.

To begin, we looked at Pepperdine's exisiting undergraduate film programs, Film Studies and Media Production, and pulled all the courses with thought were beneficial to film students. Next, we looked at the MFA Film Program, and added courses that we thought were essential to an undergraduate's education. Afterwards, we perused through course catalogs for the business and law schools. We were able to find invaluable courses in entertainment law/intellectual property from the law school. The business school, unfortunately, doesn't offer many promising courses for film students...yet.

Our prototype can be found here: [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zevTEARG82uoHXz1bjjHQQRPmaHkb0BMi-EPuOCt-RQ/edit?usp=sharing&nbsp https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zevTEARG82uoHXz1bjjHQQRPmaHkb0BMi-EPuOCt-RQ/edit?usp=sharing&nbsp];

After we had drafted our prototype/proposal for the major, we met with three faculty stakeholders, two of which were Media Production professors. We also conducted a focus group comprised of current Film Studies and Media Production students. The feedback we got from both sides was invaluable, and really helped outline our next steps, which are summarized in the milestones below.

Milestones/ Target Dates:

- 2/26/17: Collaborate with business school UIF Candidates (Charchil and Stephen) to come up with a potential course/courses that would benefit both film students and MBAs looking to get into the entertainment industry.
- 3/26/17: Create sequences so that film students may select an emphasis/specialty within the program by their junior year.

- 4/26/17: Come up with new and innovative film courses unique to Pepperdine that would distinguish it from other film programs

- 4/26/17: Present updated proposal to faculty stakeholders, students.
== Enhancing Student Engagement ==

The primary goal of this is to bring students together purely for the purpose of the social experience. Students that we have spoken with speak very highly of the programs and clubs that are offered, but the common thread is that they all tie to something academic, sports-related, etc. This makes sense, nothing wrong with that. This is an institution of higher learning and funding and support should go towards those endeavors.

That said - we believe that there is a gap that can be filled in the social spectrum. After speaking with other UIF fellows about successful programs at their schools, we would like to implement a handful of social clubs that are only for the purpose of bringing good people together. Ideally, out of this students (and maybe even faculty and staff) can form unexpected alliances and share ideas. Participants dictate their own agenda and talking points, the only planned piece is the food.

The best part about this - it's incredibly easy. If you bring food into a room, people will show up. That is a tenant of the college experience. I plan to steal an idea from Drew Spooner to kick this off and then we'll go from there. Ideally we'll do this the first Wednesday of the month over lunch in one of the common areas.
*Film industry example
**A group has an interest in working in the film industry (i.e. 2 undergrad media production/film studies majors, 2 law students with interest in the film industry, and 2 business school students with interest in finance/marketing for films)
**They receive training on group dynamics and how the film industry works then come up with a project to work on. This group decides they want to work on creating/producing/submitting a short film for a festival.
**They strive towards this collective goal with their specific expertise and are coached by alumni mentors through each school’s alumni network, professors and the on-campus industry specialists.
*The overall goal of the program is to serve as a hands on experience for all areas of a production/project for a multi-disciplinary team.

Milestones/ Target Dates:

- 11/28/17: Make any adjustments needed, and either present to faculty stakeholders, or, if ready, present to Seaver Undergraduate Academic Council.

== Strategy #2 - Enhancing Student Engagement ==

February - Donut Club

== Strategy #1 Collaboration Between Departments and Campuses ==

Our prototype can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zevTEARG82uoHXz1bjjHQQRPmaHkb0BMi-EPuOCt-RQ/edit?usp=sharing

- 3/26/17: Create sequences so that film students may select an emphasis/specialty within the program by their junior year.

== Strategy #1 Collaboration Between Departments and Campuses ==

Our prototype can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zevTEARG82uoHXz1bjjHQQRPmaHkb0BMi-EPuOCt-RQ/edit?usp=sharing

- 9/26/17: Complete the recommened adjustments by stakeholders, and present the updated proposal to them once more.

- 10/28/17: Present completed proposal to the Executive Board of IEMC, with stakeholders' support.

- 11/28/17: Make any adjustments needed, and either present to faculty stakeholders, or, if ready, present to Seaver Undergraduate Academic Council.

== Strategy #2 - Enhancing Student Engagement ==

February - Donut Club

March - Bruschetta Club

April - Pizza Club

== Overview ==

Pepperdine University is a private university in Malibu, California. This UCC affiliate contains an undergraduate campus (Seaver), a Law School, Business School, School of Public Policy, and School of Psychology.

Formed in 1937, the school has grown from a tiny start-up in the downtown area to hosting campus locations in Malibu, West LA, Encino, Westlake Village, and Irvine. Across these locations, Pepperdine educates about 3,500 undergraduate and 4,200 post-graduate students every year.

== Student Entrepreneurship ==

Undergraduate School (Seaver)

- Seaver strongly encourages and supports the entrepreneurial spirit of many of its students. This spirit is especially strong in the school's Business Administration Division, where students are offered many courses in Management, Finance, and the like that strengthen their entrepreneuraial skills, and they are exposed to many incredible opportunities to exercise those skills throguh clubs, honors socieites/business fraternities, and internships. There are similar opportunities for students of other divisions as well.

- The Pepperdine Entrepreneur Club, open to all undergraduate students, is composed of an outstanding, dedicated group of students and specializes in start-up development. They are master networkers, forging relationships with the many guest speakers that speak at meetings every few weeks. Among these speakers are executive members of large companies, investors, and strategists. This club enables student entrepreneurs to act on their ideas by partnering them with an alumni mentor.

- The Career Services Center at Seaver College hosts events that provide students with the tool kit needed to succeed as student entrepreneurs. They also offer one on one sessions in which they can help the student get started on their entrepreneurial journey by helping them plan next steps and helping them network with the right people. The Career Center also helps students find internships that appeal to their entrepreneurial interests.

- Waves of Innovation is an incredible program unique to Pepperdine that seeks to enable our best entrepreneurs to see their ideas through. It is a school-wide competition in which students (in addition to faculty and staff) submit their ideas in writing. Some of the best ideas are selected to receive grants that take them into the prototyping phase, which is also the second stage of the competition. Finally, the best prototypes receive further grant money to see the idea through to completion. It's a thrilling process, especially given that ideas can be awarded grants up to $150,000!

- Pepperdine is renowned for having one of the best study abroad programs in the country. They also do an incredible job of arranging amazing internships for students in their host countries, enabling students to strengthen their skills by engaging in the work that they want to do in an unfamilar setting, preparing them to conquer any situation

Business School (Graziadio)
- Graziadio offers an Entrepreneurship concentration that can be obtained through the 15 and 20 month MBA programs. Students complete course work in Generating, Marketing, Financing, and Managing new ventures in addition to other elective and core coursework.

- Graziadio also participates in the SEER certificate which strives to create profitable business practices while maintaining a focus on social consciousness and sustainability.

- Hult Prize (part of the Clinton Foundation) allows Graziadio students to pitch their solution to a global problem in a case competition format. The grand prize (winning the global round) is a $1,000,000 seed fund in order to realize the group's idea.

== Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

Undergraduate (Seaver)

They are constantly seeking to improve available programs and current curriculum and often encourage students to collaborate with them in innovating curriculum. Faculty are also encouraged to compete the annual Waves of Innovation competition, and it's not uncommon for faculty members to take semesters or years off to work on books or side projects.

Business School

- Most of the professors at the Graziadio School of Business have other ventures that they are pursuing. Some are involved with start-ups and some have their own consulting groups that they work with. Professors are very encouraging of student innovation and have even been involved professionally with students after graduation. One of the great selling points of having a small class size is allowing professors to share their personal experience in the field and connect with students about their personal ambitions.

- Step-Forward Day is a school-wide initiative that encourages all students to spend roughly 5 hours on a unified Saturday completing various projects throughout the Los Angeles area. Activities range from re-arranging libraries to picking fruit on a charitable farm. In-N-Out also partners with the school and sends a truck to the after-party.

== BACKGROUND ==

Macy Tush is a student at William Jewell College in Kansas City. University Innovation Fellows have been working to improve her campus for four years, and Macy has been a part of the program for two years. She and the other fellows on campus worked individually and together to encourage entrepreuneurship and innovation. One fellow, Alex, wanted to focus on determining a system to quantify happiness on campus, and then finding ways to improve it. Alex and a few other fellows were close to graduating, so they decided to work as a team to create a lasting impact before they left.

Alex created a survey that asked users to rank factors that affect one's happiness, such as freedom and autonomy, and used these results to quantify an individual's happiness. While no legitamite conclusions could be drawn from just this survey, the fellows saw a pattern. Happiness increased in individuals who felt safer, felt they had more control over their decisions and who had the opportunity to meet new people. Macy also felt there was significant disunity on campus, specifically between faculty and students, and realized that this is also a cause for dissatisfaction on campus. So the fellows got to work.

== HOW ==

Macy and her cohort had settled on a simple realization that a happier campus would lead to more creativity and better innovation. To this end, Macy decided to host events intended to increase the morale on campus, more specifically pop-up classes, makeathons, and town halls/open forums.[[File:HOW.jpg|thumb]]

Initially, marketing for these events was executed in a traditional manor. Macy created events on facebook, printed off flyers, and added onto the events calendars through the school. Unfortunately, despite the great intentions and admirable effort, turnout was minimal. What the UIF cohort would come to realize is that events become tremendously more attractive to participants if they are marketed as mysterious and exclusive, making them stand out amongst an already crowded campus listing.

Macy and her team dug deep and decided to promote their next event through business cards. They ordered simple cards with an “X” on one side and the time and location on the other professionally printed. Nothing else. No group name. No additional information. Members of the UIF team would personally hand these out to classmates while simply adding “Don’t tell anyone”.

So now, what once was an open forum event at a local bar is now a mysterious meet-up that requires a card to get into and is supposed to be kept secret. Turnout was almost 100% and the event lasted 2 additional hours because the dialogue was so vibrant. Macy’s plan was a resounding success.

== WHY IT WORKED ==

From Macy’s experience, having a campus filled with happy students cultivates creativity because more students will be willing to take advantage of on-campus resources. When students utilize those resources, they are giving themselves the opportunity to be creative and innovative with their ideas. Consider these 3 points when initiating happiness on your campus:

[[File:WHY IT WORKED.png|thumb|WHY IT WORKED.png]]First, give students a platform to be heard. Some schools offer specific meetings or events, where students can voice their opinions. However, the hardest part with these meetings is getting a variety of people to show up. Try creating a special invitation or personally reaching out to invite a student. The more voices in attendance means more perspectives that can address the pessimism on your campus.

Second, don’t just talk about the problem, generate a solution. For example, by the end of the meeting, make a goal of having three solutions for three problems. If not, you are just going to create a space for complaints and additional negativity. Thinking of solutions on spot will also further students’ ability to be creative and innovative in solving problems they thought would never be solved.

Finally, do not be afraid to do small, silly things to grab students’ attention. Not only will you be making a lasting impression, but you’ll also create a great conversation starter that could catch on across campus!

== BACKLASH ==

Every work we do we find some flaws and a few counterblasts. While promoting for the events Macy and her cohort faced some challenges and counterblasts. Some of them were inviting people for the event when they are conducting it for the first time was the most typical task they ever faced.
