= Strategy #1: Build an Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship Community Organization
=

== Background
==

Throughout the history of San Francisco State there has been no active and sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship community organization. This is a fundamental building block to making innovation and entrepreneurship accessible to all students in any lasting capacity outside the classroom. A student-led organization has power on campus to request space, request funding, host events, and bring students together.

Some organizations, faculty, and students on campus try to tap into the innovation and entrepreneurship space. This community will serve as the connecting point to bring these organizations, faculty, and students already working in this space together.

[[https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1eanYp3J6bqW7HIxrvtFY84U1N6aGOSaVk53xWJdnTbQ/edit?usp=sharing Business Model Canvas Link]]

== Structure
==

This organization will be run by a student committee, incorporating planned collaboration with student government (ASI). A board of faculty advisors from multiple colleges across the university will help the organization have impact and gain insight. In its initial phase, formal structure for student governance will not be necessary however the need elected positions may arise in the future. Regardless, this organization will always be run by a comittee of students

Online presence is key and will be our primary way of communicating with our community – we will have on online home base. This allows more constant communication, activity, and collaboration while providing a platform to organize in person events within the constraints of not having a dedicated physical space. Additionally, this method appeals to the ‘commuter’ aspect of a large portion of our student body. Furthermore, an online community creates momentum that can remain active across many semesters.

== Tactics
==

Strategy #1 can start now and is aimed to be achievable in the Fall 2014 semester.

#Formalize Mission and Vision (October 2014)
#Found Facebook page (October 2014)
#Promote involvement through online advertising, in person flyering, and classroom visits (October 2014)
#Meet with leaders of other similar or possibly related organizations to collaborate (October 2014)
#Form a faculty board of advisors (November/December 2014)
#Formalize a connection with student government [ASI] (November/December 2014)
#Pilot a hackathon/maker event to lead into Strategy #2 (November 2014)
#Pilot social/guest speaker events (November/December 2014)

= Strategy #2: Host A Monthly Hackathon (Or Other Maker Event)
=

== Background
==

Creating a online home base increases the importance of consistent in person events. Strategy #2 focuses on programatic implementation of events to create consistency and availability for all students on campus. This is born out of the understanding that one of the single most important aspects of building a community is social ties formed through in person interaction ([http://seanbolton.me/2014/07/24/why-do-people-join-and-stay-part-of-a-community-and-how-to-support-them/ Why Do People Join and Stay Part Of a Community (and How to Support Them)]). Additionally, these events create higher visability on campus.

Several of the events implemented here will be beta tested in Strategy #1. However, Strategy #2 comes with its own new set of event possibilities to be piloted.

[[https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1lnK0PNoh141WujaEWFJIi66U6IOVpIRXfJG5RzrCVhk/edit?usp=sharing Business Model Canvas Link]]

== Structure
==

A student-led events sub-committe will be formed within the main organization to create a team specifically focused on events.

== Tactics
==

Strategy #2 is aimed at the Spring 2015 and Fall 2015 semesters.

*Secure connection with ASI as a funding source
*Explore alternate funding sources on campus
*Explore sponsorships both on event bases and general
*Formalize a monthly hackathon/maker event
*Formalize a monthly social event
*Pilot new social and maker event ideas

= Strategy #3: Found a Maker Space
=

Strategy #3 is aimed 2-3 years from the Fall 2014 semester.

The online home base will remain vibrant and constant in person events will continue. As the community grows and awareness of innovation and entrepreneurship becomes more prominent, a need will arise for a more permanent in person meeting place where students can meet and collaborate with each other freely, without the structure of a dedicated event. This will be the only way to grow innovation and entrepreneurship presence on campus because it will offer a place for impromptu collaboration, have constant availability to host events of all kinds, and be a resource for interested students to walk-in to experience.

[[https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1hQBqKANDd3Wv74yytnkuL4-Cae9-A4rUnjKh1lTxQHo/edit?usp=sharing Business Model Canvas Link]]

= Strategy #4: Innovation and Entrepreneurship Resources in Every College
=

Strategy #4 is aimed 2-3 years from the Fall 2014 semester.

Increased faculty involvement and organizational presence on campus will create a demand for more innovation and entrepreneurship courses in more colleges. By this point a space for student run ad-hoc innovation and entrepreneurship activities exists. Students will desire to bridge this with their in-class experience to make their classes more hands-on, creative, and innovation oriented. Colleges across the University will rise to fill this need by making at least 3 hands-on, creative, and innovation oriented courses per semester for each academic interest.
Innovation and entrepreneurship resources exist almost entirely in the classroom with a focus almost exclusively on academics. There is no creative learn-by-doing approach available to students. What is available is limited, both intentionally and unintentionally, to business students.

= Strategy #4: Innovation and Entrepreneurship Courses in Every College

Students at San Francisco State University (Gators as we are called) are a unique breed. Our campus has rich history of activism and diversity that remains alive today. We are often thought of as a commuter campus but do have a small, active on campus student life. We live in a part of the world that cares a lot about sustainability, being "green," social/public benefit, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship.
== Current State
==

Innovation and entrepreneurship resources exist almost entirely in the classroom with a focus almost exclusively on academics. There is no creative learn-by-doing approach available to students. What is available is limited, both intentionally and unintentionally, to business students. The broader picture of innovation and entrepreneurship is never realized as it remains contained in a limited set of single semester courses. Various innovation and entrepreneurship organizations appear to exist or have tried to exist but have had little sustaining success. This should not be confused with lack of student need or interest – in fact, there seems to be immense need and interest.
Innovation and entrepreneurship resources are available to all students across disciplines both inside and outside the classroom in both academic and creative learn-by-doing approaches.
== Background
==

== Structure
==

== Tactics
==
== Structure
==

== Tactics
==

= Strategy #4: Innovation and Entrepreneurship Courses in Every College

== Background
==

== Structure
==

== Tactics
==

Strategy #1 can start now and is aimed to be achievable in the Fall 2014 semester.

#Formalize Mission and Vision (October 2014)
#Promote involvement through online advertising, in person flyering, and classroom visits (October 2014)
#Meet with leaders of other similar or possibly related organizations to collaborate (October 2014)
#Form a faculty board of advisors (November/December 2014)
#Formalize a connection with student government [ASI] (November/December 2014)
#Pilot a hackathon/maker event to lead into Strategy #2 (November 2014)

== Background
==

Strategy #4 is aimed 2-3 years from the Fall 2014 semester.

Throughout the history of San Francisco State there has been no active and sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship community organization. A student-led organization has power on campus to request space, request funding, host events, and bring students together.
Some organizations, faculty, and students on campus try to tap into the innovation and entrepreneurship space. This community will serve as the connecting point to bring these organizations, faculty, and students already working in this space together.

== Structure
==

Creating a online home base increases the importance of consistent in person events. Strategy #2 focuses on programatic implementation of events to create consistency and availability for all students on campus. Additionally, these events create higher visability on campus.

= San Francisco State University Culture
=
Students at San Francisco State University (Gators as we are called) are a unique breed. Our campus has rich history of activism and diversity that remains alive today. We are often thought of as a commuter campus but do have a small, active on campus student life. We live in a part of the world that cares a lot about sustainability, being "green," social/public benefit, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship.
== Current State
==

== Envisioned Future State
==

Innovation and entrepreneurship resources are available to all students across disciplines both inside and outside the classroom in both academic and creative learn-by-doing approaches. Stronger community partnerships will be formed to utilize and connect to the vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship environment surrounding the campus.
San Francisco State University sits in one of the capitals of the world for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. There are many organizations to reach out to and with such a broad selection, some partners will be able to be found to fill in resource gaps lacking on campus.

Sbolton:

= The Importance of Clout
=

Defined formally, clout is "influence or power, especially in politics or business." Clout gives validity to a message – it gives weight – so that a message has a stronger impact. It's the difference between the president walking into a room and a normal citizen walking into a room. When working to spur innovation and entrepreneurship, building clout allows your vision to flourish.

= A Roadmap
=

The journey to building clout has several main steps along the way:

== Start Small
==

Build a small coalition of people you trust to move the project forward. Here numbers matter less than impact. You want people who are 100% committed to the vision of what needs to be accomplished. This small coalition (which may included faculty) will serve as the main cheerleaders for your project, encouraging other to be a part of it and building clout.

== Use Social Media
==

Social media will help you post ideas, share events, gauge interest and organize people. You can learn when people will be willing to meet up and for what kind of activities. It's important that there are many social activities to help others get each other and get over the social barriers first. Building a social media presence gets more people talking about the project – word of mouth power is clout.

== Gain Faculty Support (At Least One Main Person)
==

It is vital to have at least one main faculty supporter that can be there to help you acquire the help and resources you need. The faculty member is an insider to your school's administration and gives validity to your requests for resources. While the faculty member is vital, you must not rely on them to be able to run your project – you should work independently and use them for assistance as needed.

== Reach Out to Community
==

You will find support, resources and help from unexpected places so it's important to reach out to as many organizations as possible that might align with your project's mission. The more organizations you are able to gain support from, the more organizations will support you so it's important to build support from organizations that may be easier to access first and grow from there. This will require a brute force tactic. Expect to get a reply from about 1 in 20 emails – so don't get discouraged!

= Tips
=

== Make Social Events (Not Just Events Focused On Getting Stuff Done)
==

Events help people get to know each other and different types of events allow people to get to know each other in different ways. Organize simple, fun activities like getting breakfast in some area of your town. Go to them instead of expecting them to come to you. Feel free to organize events in different parts of town and at different venues. From a creative standpoint, meeting in different contexts helps to spark idea. From a community standpoint, building relationships is key to keeping people involved.

== Frame Your Project As Research
==

Every part of your project can be framed as a research question. This is an easy way to gain support as most universities place a high importance on doing research. This is a win-win tactic where your project gains support while the university looks good by producing research. In addition, more faculty may be interested in working with you from this perspective. You may also gain access to certain grant funding and can have a presence in academic blogs/journals – building support in different areas.
