&lt;div&gt;Stephen is a MasterCard Foundation scholar at Arizona State University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Systems. He is [[File:Stephen A.jpg|thumb|Stephen A.jpg]]a&amp;amp;nbsp;member of the GlobalResolve club - a group of students committed to carrying out humanitarian services in developing countries. During the spring break of 2016, he travelled with the club to Peru to install solar panels for the Azul Wasi Orphanage home in Cusco. In late 2013 to early 2014, Stephen was selected as the campus ambassador for the maiden edition of the Agricultural Innovation Prize, the largest sponsored contest on Agriculture worldwide. This competition was powered by 40 Chances, a Howard G. Buffett initiative to feed our hungry world and hosted by the University of Wisconsin, to seek innovative ideas in addressing hunger challenges from college students. Being motivated by the goal of the Agriculture Innovation Prize, Stephen applied to attend the 2014 Clinton Global Initiative University and subsequently received startup funding from the Resolutions Project to embark on his entrepreneurship idea of sustainably producing healthy organic palm oil for low income communities in Ghana. He received the Dean’s Award for the 2014 academic year and the College of Technology and Innovation’s Examplar Award as well as the Cooley Leadership Maroon Badge for his laudable aptitude. Stephen aspires to be an engineer as well as a social entrepreneur – changing lives and promoting sustainable growth.&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;

Makeathons are an excellent way of collaborating with students from all around campus in different majors. It enables them to use their creativity to innovate and explore new ideas that they may have. It is a competition, but it is focused on learning rather than winning. Its purpose is to help students gain experience with the process of design and the use of equipment that they would normally miss out on in the classroom.&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
To run a successful Makeathon, several goals should be outlined. What are you trying to accomplish and why?&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
*Develop passion and hands on skills with tools and other machinery&lt;br /&gt;
*Connect with resources and other participants &lt;br /&gt;
*Invest in people &lt;br /&gt;
*Have a good experience and want participants to come back the next year to mentor/help&lt;br /&gt;
*Have it be less about competition, but more about learning, forming relationships, and having fun&lt;br /&gt;
*Gather a diversity of students across all majors&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
*Safety&lt;br /&gt;

== Where To Begin ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There is a lot of planning that needs to happen beforehand and as well as a number of factors to take into consideration.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;u&amp;gt;Funding and Advertising&amp;lt;/u&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In order to cover the costs of all supplies and other equipment tools, there must be sponsors. A good route to take is looking at Kent State in Ohio's Fashion Tech Hackathon and to have tiers as sponsors. Target is also another good option. It can be expensive, depending on the number of people you expect to be attending, which is why advertising is so crucial. There should be enough supplies for all participants, not too little and not too much. It should be done in several different ways to achieve the best outcome.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
*Use Eventbrite for tickets and also keep track of how many are officially attending&lt;br /&gt;
*Advertise for a long period of time to gain more participants&lt;br /&gt;
*Spread by word of mouth&lt;br /&gt;

*Create facebook event and use money to spread word&lt;br /&gt;
