&lt;br /&gt;
Rebecka “Brecka” Seward, also known as “puzzle brain,” “kid magnet,” and “animal whisperer,” is an eighth-generation Idahoan and an avid outdoorswoman with a passion for learning about life through working with animals and children. &amp;amp;nbsp;Upon graduation from Boise State University she will be known as “One Who Studies Life” or simply a biologist! &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;Throughout her first quarter of a century of living life Rebecka has immersed herself in a variety of jobs, hobbies, volunteer opportunities, athletic endeavors, and educational endeavors. &amp;amp;nbsp;She hopes to synthesize these experiences by establishing an “Oasis of Opportunities” for marginalized youth and animals.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As a lifelong, insightful nvestigator she hopes to help find innovative solutions to some of life’s issues - even if they are considered by mainstream society to be insignificant, or insurmountable. &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;Rebecka is particularly passionate about uprooting the subtle and yet pervasive fear of mental illnesses and disabilities that is prevalent in today’s society. &amp;amp;nbsp;She believes that this fear is the underlying factor for many of the social and health trends that are present in America and other cultures. &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Through the activities of the Oasis of Opportunities she hopes to overcome the social and cultural glass boxes that are the labels, misconceptions, and stereotypes that confine and constrain many youth and animals to the margins of mainstream society. &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In addition to working with marginalized animals and youth, Rebeckahopes the Oasis will be a place of community engagement and education. &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;Several of her interest areas are: educating about the cycles of life in a wholesome, hands-on approach; researching innovative ways to grow produce and crops; and enabling all individuals to find their life passion by giving them the opportunity to reach out and give back in meaningful ways.&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of the ways she is currently synthesizing her experiences is thru the creation of Kamiah’s Kool Vest: an innovative solution to heat stress in service dogs.&lt;br /&gt;

*These courses are project-based, and teach students about engineering disciplines, as well as developing critical thinking and provides a &amp;quot;design-oriented engineering experience&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
*ENGR 130 involves a service project where students work with a client from the community to apply the engineering design process to solve a problem&lt;br /&gt;
*While some design thinking is already a part of these courses, there could be room for the addition of more explicity human-centered design principles into the curriculum&lt;br /&gt;
*This could also be a platform to introduce engineering students to entrepreneurship concepts that they may not otherwise be exposed to&lt;br /&gt;

*This survey could be dynamic (e.g. questions could change based on identifiers such as major, part-time/full-time, etc.) to gather specific data about different parts of the student population&lt;br /&gt;

*All incoming freshmen engineering students are required to take ENGR 120 (Introduction to Engineering) or ENGR 130 (Introduction to Engineering Applications)&lt;br /&gt;
*These courses are project-based, and teach students about engineering disciplines, as well as developing critical thinking and provides a &amp;quot;design-oriented engineering experience&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
*ENGR 130 involves a service project where students work with a client from the community to apply the engineering design process to solve a problem&lt;br /&gt;
*While some design thinking is already a part of these courses, there could be room for the addition of more explicity human-centered design principles into the curriculum&lt;br /&gt;
*This could also be a platform to introduce engineering students to entrepreneurship concepts that they may not otherwise be exposed to&lt;br /&gt;

*The Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) Program unites undergraduate education and faculty research in a team-based context&lt;br /&gt;

*The Boise State University VIP program is part of a broad national and international consortium of universities&lt;br /&gt;

*The New Product Development Lab, housed within the College of Engineering, mostly provides rapid prototyping and design consulting services to local businesses and entrepreneurs outside the university, but is also a resource available to student entrepreneurs that is not currently well-publicized&lt;br /&gt;
*While Venture College's services are available to all students, and they have been expanding their reach to Computer Science majors, this services is still unknown to most engineering majors&lt;br /&gt;
*A goal for the future would be to implement a program which partners engineering students with ideas with mentors from the local entrepreneurship community and/or students from the Business College to help them work toward commercializing their ideas (or co-developing ideas for new ventures)&lt;br /&gt;

*This survey could be dynamic (e.g. questions could change based on identifiers such as major, part-time/full-time, etc.) to gather specific data about different parts of the student population&lt;br /&gt;

Rebecka “Brecka” Seward, also known as “puzzle brain,” “kid magnet,” and “animal whisperer,” is an eighth-generation Idahoan and an avid outdoorswoman with a passion for learning about life through working with animals and children. &amp;amp;nbsp;Upon graduation from Boise State University she will be known as “One Who Studies Life” or simply a biologist! &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;Throughout her first quarter of a century of living life Rebecka has immersed herself in a variety of jobs, hobbies, volunteer opportunities, athletic endeavors, and educational endeavors. &amp;amp;nbsp;She hopes to synthesize these experiences by establishing an “Oasis of Opportunities” for marginalized youth and animals.&lt;br /&gt;

As a lifelong, insightful nvestigator she hopes to help find innovative solutions to some of life’s issues - even if they are considered by mainstream society to be insignificant, or insurmountable. &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;Rebecka is particularly passionate about uprooting the subtle and yet pervasive fear of mental illnesses and disabilities that is prevalent in today’s society. &amp;amp;nbsp;She believes that this fear is the underlying factor for many of the social and health trends that are present in America and other cultures. &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Through the activities of the Oasis of Opportunities she hopes to overcome the social and cultural glass boxes that are the labels, misconceptions, and stereotypes that confine and constrain many youth and animals to the margins of mainstream society. &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In addition to working with marginalized animals and youth, Rebeckahopes the Oasis will be a place of community engagement and education. &amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;Several of her interest areas are: educating about the cycles of life in a wholesome, hands-on approach; researching innovative ways to grow produce and crops; and enabling all individuals to find their life passion by giving them the opportunity to reach out and give back in meaningful ways.&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
