Whilst studying her undergraduate in Energy Systems Engineering, Rachel developed theoretical skills in holistic management of compex systems and problem solving. Complementary to this, in her masters study, Rachel has undertaken multiple projects hand in hand with local and international industrial partners, focusing on innovation mangement, business model development and design thinking. Through the UIF training program, both these study paths have been nicely tied together and put to practical application.
From the personal side, as an AUstralian, Rachel enjoy studying, working and exploring in Switzerland. Naturally curious she often find herself in new and unexpected places (hence the move to Switzerland) and enjoy learning about people, experiencing cultures and discussing experiences and ideas.

= ''Cohort 2019: Lara von Däniken, Gian R. Grob, Lauren McMillan, Rachel Cummings'' =

= Four Projects to Address Key Issues at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts =

As part of this year's cohort, we will outline four projects that we will encourage innovation and entrepreneurship at HSLU (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts).

== Project 1: The HSLU Festival
==

=== Person in charge: Lara von Däniken ===

==== Key tactics to bring this project to life ====

1. All deans and the director of HSLU must see the added value in the event and agree on the realisation of it.

2. A team in charge of organizing the event must be found, preferably with students from all different departments to bring in all perspectives. This team can then conduct research into the needs of the students to make sure that the event will be interesting to them and successful.

3. A budget, as well as an outline of the event, must be pitched to the board in order to get approval.

4. As soon as approved, the event can be further planned into all details, and eventually, put into reality.

5. After the event, it is advisable to analyze what went well and what could be improved. The team in charge should also evaluate if it makes sense to repeat this event, and if yes, with what frequency.

== Project 2: HSLU Ubersetzt ==

=== Point Person: Lauren McMillan ===

==== Key tactics to bring this project to life: ====

1. The software and website maintenance teams in each department must work to enable translation. If manual translation, this requires authors who are fluent in the language as well.

2. Support from the deans would empower employees to enact translations more effectively.

3. Software for automatic translation must be procured, if automatic translation is selected.

4. A budget must be allocated to allow for automatic translation software, or manual translation to be performed.

5. Continued maintenance and updating of the system must be performed.

== Project 3: The HSLU Cross-departmental Course Availability
==

=== Person in charge: Rachel Cummings
===

==== Key tactics to bring this project to life
====

1. All department deans and administration bodies must see the added value of cross-departmental study, and agree to applicable acceditation for students.

2. All students from different departments need to be clearly informed about the possibility of enrolling in ("ISA") courses from other departments, which would be in line with their minors or areas of interest. This could be done via an official email from the University leading students to the course platform, and additionally through other channels that target students, for example the University social media channels and the website.

3. Updates are needed to the current HSLU ISA homepage to ensure it is simple and usable for students. Alternatively, a new platform could be constructed, guided by a project team of HSLU students and staff. These sites should also ensure that the correct information is forwarded to the adminstrative bodies of the university deparments.

4. Once more students are actively enrolling and being accredited for courses, HSLU could enlarge the courses offered so to increase learning opportunities and flexibility for students. This could be done by a student/ staff focus or project group

= The Five Step Strategy for Lucerne University =
We have encountered three priorities that we will develop over the coming semesters to promote Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Lucerne University.

=== '''Venture Capital Movement'''
===

[[File:Screen Shot 2018-02-14 at 12.45.57.png]]

We are building a Venture Capital Fund that helps students to get funding for their idea. At the same time, the get the chance to experience and learn about Lean Startup while invest the won budget during a startup course at University.

''The Plan To Action:''

''1. Refine / Polish the idea and gain insights about the expectations of the target group''

''2. Setup a communication strategy with Website and Flyers to validate the interest and inform stakeholders''

''3. Get in touch with faculty to discuss options of development and to gain the funding needed''

''4. Recruit the needed commitee for the VC Fund''

''5. Contact sponsors for collaboration''
''[[File:Screen Shot 2018-02-14 at 12.47.27.png]]''

=== '''Startup Ecosystem Map Switzerand'''
===

We help students and entrepreneurs in Switzerland to find the resources within our ecosystem by providing them with a map that not only shows all the assets, but also puts them in a chronological relevance. What does the Swiss startup ecosystem offer in terms of incubation? What in terms of funding? Where can you go to to get your funding?

''The Plan To Action:''

''1. Research on current offerings''

''2. Find the assets that would be relevant for the Ecosystem Map''

''3. Build MVP / Mockup for the map with easy tools''

''4. Gain attention from the stakeholders''

''5. What is the business model? How do we assure the right data?''

=== '''The Student Project Platform'''
===

We are building a platform that helps students to find projects for their final thesis on master and bachelor (undergraduate / graduate) level.

''The Plan To Action:''

''1. Get support from the board of directors from our campus''

''2. Find a easy way to integrate the platform into our current university ecosystem''

''3. Do a first test run for projects in February 2019''

''4. Track the results and get more funding for next iteration''

At the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, innovation and entrepreneurship is mostly promoted by a cross-departmental organization called Smartup ([https://www.hslu.ch/de-ch/wirtschaft/campus/smart-up/ https://www.hslu.ch/de-ch/wirtschaft/campus/smart-up/][https://blog.hslu.ch/smart-up/) )], which gives the students the tools to invent, build and spin-out their business idea. Furthermore, Smartup offers several open spaces where students have access to mentors, toolboxes and promotional events and even coworking places([https://blog.hslu.ch/smart-up/coworking/ https://blog.hslu.ch/smart-up/coworking/][https://blog.hslu.ch/smart-up/angebot-2/angebot-fuer-studierende/) )]. In addition, these spaces serve as a place where venture capitalists and students come together to realize business ideas.

Alongside these efforts, there is a strong academic focus on Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Design Thinking for students involved in Smart-Up. Students not pursuing startups via Smart-up may also take these courses, and can become involved in Innovation and Design via block week courses such as "Medtech DIY". In addition, there are departmental institutes which focus on these topics, including the Institute of Innovation and Technology, and the CreaLab.
The students that want more exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship, can find several offers on the Lucernce University campus, such as the student-initiated projects, namely Future Forum Lucerne ([http://www.futureforum.ch/) http://www.futureforum.ch/)], the club Innovatis ([https://www.innovatis-club.ch/) https://www.innovatis-club.ch/)], Women in Business ([https://www.hslu.ch/de-ch/wirtschaft/institute/ifz/finance-banking/womens-business-and-diversity-management/womens-business/agenda/ https://www.hslu.ch/de-ch/wirtschaft/institute/ifz/finance-banking/womens-business-and-diversity-management/womens-business/agenda/]) or TEDxLucerne University ([https://www.tedxhochschuleluzern.ch https://www.tedxhochschuleluzern.ch][http://tedxhochschuleluzern.com/) )]. These projects serve as a base for networking and learning.

'''Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship:'''

Maybe the question should be: how can innovation and entrepreneurship be taught in university modules, when the faculty body does not have the mindset needed?

At the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, faculty member are not excluded from participating in innovation and entrepreneurship programs that are offered on campus. Due to the presence of innovation and entrepreneurship modules, there is a high level of expertise, regarding those topics. Consequently, our faculty members possess the necessary abilities and mindset to promote these invaluable assets.

Many of the faculty members have start-ups or consultancy agencies on the side, so the mindset of entrepreneurship permeates their professional activities as well as their research. This incorporates graduates and alumni into their startups, as well as providing a practical context for the students in courses.

'''Actively supporting the university technology transfer function:'''

The Engineering and Architecture Department (Technik und Architektur) department has recently established a technology transfer department (Wissens- und Technologietransfer; [https://www.hslu.ch/de-ch/technik-architektur/forschung/wissens-und-technologietransfer/ https://www.hslu.ch/de-ch/technik-architektur/forschung/wissens-und-technologietransfer/]) for the Engineering and Architecture department. In addition, the building sector of the Engineering and Architecture department has its own technology transfer program ([https://www.hslu.ch/en/lucerne-university-of-applied-sciences-and-arts/research/projects/detail/?pid=3716 https://www.hslu.ch/en/lucerne-university-of-applied-sciences-and-arts/research/projects/detail/?pid=3716])

'''Facilitating university-industry collaboration:'''

Smartup, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts organization previously mentioned above, has already supported multiple spin-offs, especially including startups in the engineering and digital marketing industry. In addition, Smartup supports student entrepreneurs in the crucial phase of spinning out their business, by supporting them in with their team match making data base ([https://blog.hslu.ch/smart-up/angebot-2/suche-biete-an/) https://blog.hslu.ch/smart-up/angebot-2/suche-biete-an/)].

Further funding opportunities for colloaborative innovation efforts are available through Innosuisse governmental grants (https://www.innosuisse.ch/inno/en/home/start-your-innovation-project/innovationsprojekte.html) that encourage Swiss universities and industry companies to work together. The Lucerne University of Applied Science regularly takes advantage of this opportunity, especially on the graduate student level.

Especially the engineering and architecture department has built up collaborations with partners in the industry, that allow hundreds of students each semester to work on collaborative projects. Every bachelor student in Engineering completes their thesis as a co-production of the student and an industry partner.

'''Engaging with regional and local economic development efforts:'''

The Lucerne University cherishes its industry partnerships to share its knowledge with them to partake in regional and local economic development. The University’s industry partners include well-known organizations, such as the city of Lucerne, Swiss Tourism as well as the VBL (Lucerne’s public transportation organization) and VBZ (Zurich’s public transportation organization.

In the environment surrounding the university, there are a number of further support networks for entrepreneurs, including Technopark Luzern - which houses later-stage startups. There are further funding opportunities such as Innosuisse, a governmental body promoting innovation provides funding both for startups and for university-industry collaborations.
