Santa Monica College is proud to play an active part in our local community, and is committed to maintaining and building new public-private sector partnerships to address pressing economic development needs. By fostering increased collaboration between the private development sector, local and state governments and national and community-based not-for-profit organizations, Santa Monica College continually strives to expand its outreach to communities and clients that may be unfamiliar with the financial and technical assistance that is available to help local communities realize their vision and goals to secure the benefits of the new economy. SMC’s programs support sustainable economic development strategies that leverage investments from other public and private sources in order to ensure the long-term viability of local economic development efforts.

Offered at SMC are various programs including the Emeritus Program, that offers more than 120 free classes, ranging from art to literature to computer training and more, to older adults, and community education programs that offer short term, not-for-credit classes to community members who wish to explore personal interests or professional career enhancement courses.
Patrick Rodriguez, who goes by his initials P.J., is a visual artist and designer from the San Francisco Bay Area, California. With a background in studio art that includes work in many different materials and mediums including (but not limited to) paint, fabric, marble, and wood, he strives to solve meaningful problems with creative solutions and unique perspectives. More recently, P.J. has become a student of Interaction Design at Santa Monica College in Los Angeles, learning the intricacies and methodologies of Interaction and User Experience Design and the distinction between "artist" and "designer."

P.J. has recently discovered a passion for studying foreign languages, with a particular interest in the Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish varieties. Upon realizing the joy he receives from connecting with those from other cultures, P.J. credits this passion of his as a strong catalyst for his growing curiosity in foreign affairs, regional dialects and customs, as well as developing his increasingly open-mindedness and thirst for knowledge.

When not studying or focused on design, P.J. enjoy dancing (popping, salsa, bachata, random amoeba-inspired movements...) and being active outdoors as much as possible. To his fortune, he has also just learned of the vital importance of sunscreen and plans to pursue its use for the remainder of his life.
