Elon University is a selective, mid-sized private university in Elon, North Carolina. Elon currently offers a major and a minor in entrepreneurship through the Doherty center, which prepares students to become entrepreneurs in either for-profit businesses or social businesses. While this helps, it is not enough. The business school alone seems to have a monopoly on entrepreneurship and there is not enough interdisciplinary application of design thinking and innovation. Our promotion of I&E seeks to inspire students to create and change the world around them in a variety of majors, requiring widespread faculty support and appeals to creativity that match all kinds of students.

Many faculty members within Elon University are very innovative and entrepreneurial in the way in which they approach their independent research projects and publications, yet it does not seem as though the students or community are always informed about their accomplishments. Although we do not have anything on campus right now that falls into this category. One of our prototypes involves the addition of a new office to the "Instructional & Campus Technologies", which is going to be called "Protection for You". The office will work on informing students and faculty on patents, copyrights, and trademarks. What they are? How they can be obtained? What are external resources that can be used? In addition, the offcie will simply answer any questions students might have or guide students into the proper direction if they did not have the answers.

Elon is located in the Triad and is very close to the Research Triangle. Our Student Professional Development Center works to connect students with businesses in both of these areas. We also have large job and internship fairs that bring in startups and large companies like Deloitte and Oracle. These programs are very common among most schools and we are currently working to expand them. Because of the many other schools in the area with strong research focuses it is difficult to attract larger research projects but there are some smaller companies that we have been able to work with. Our Environmental Department has been involved with doing some really neat testing for products that will be sold to Kobalt and there are many other projects taking place within our other departments. As a Leadership Circle this is an area I think we could improve in. To do this we will need to reach out to many of the local companies to see what types of projects and research they might need validated. Because we are such a small school compared to schools like NC State there are some smaller projects that we could work on that would be very helpful to those businesses. The first step for us will be getting involved with the Chamber of Commerce.

Elon has made a lot of progress in this area and our plans are to continue to make huge leaps and bounds here. The town of Elon and the surrounding area were hit hard when the textile companies left. Over the next 20 years our university has major priorities to help build up the areas around Elon and create an environment that will bring in more business and attract students and faculty. We have also invested in offices in downtown Burlington and Greensboro that are specifically geared toward community engagement, innovation, and entrepreneurship. These efforts are only possible with the support of the entire university so we plan to help out in whatever way we can. Initially it will be important to do surveys and studies on other universities that have accomplished similar goals. One example that we have looked at is Duke University, which has helped transform Durham over the years.

[[File:2017-05-09-PHOTO-00006497.jpg]]Noor Irshaidat is a sophomore student studying International Business & International and Global Studies at Elon University, North Carolina. Her focuses include European Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and Leadership Studies. Noor is originally from Amman, Jordan, where she lived until 2016 when she moved to Elon, North Carolina for college. Elon University's wide network helped Noor meet couple of University Innovation Fellows who encouraged her to apply and become one herself.

At Elon University, Noor is involved with Elon International Society, Model United Nations, and Student Government Organization. In addition, Noor has worked with students as an Orientation Leader and a Teacher Assistant for first years through their transition process to college. Finally, Noor is also a Group Exercise Instructor working with Elon Campus Recreation to help offer a variety of Group Exercise Classes for the student body.

Noor has been able to fulfill her passion for leadership through becoming an Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellow. As a Leadership Fellow, Noor is learning in depth about leadership and working in teams, which is an essential aspect of successful inititatives. Noor believes that positive change cannot be established without the suitable leadership style and approach. With the help of creativity, team work, and research Noor hopes to achieve a positive change that will leave a sustainable impact not only on Elon's Campus but on the community members as a whole.

[[File:Lean.png|border|left|Lean.png]] The Lean Start Up Movement (LSM) is a paradigm shift in product and business development that was introduced by Steve Blank and further popularized by Eric Ries, the author of the bestselling book,''The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses''. This concept was initially inspired by the Japanese “lean manufacturing” concepts from the 1980s & 1990s where companies would focus on processes that create value - more specifically, features and services that customers are willing to pay for. By utilizing a scientific approach in which minimal viable products are produced, manufactures were able to bring the product to market quickly and iterate based on the feedback received. This is the core of the lean startup movement: rapid prototyping coupled with extensive analysisofcustomer interactions to pinpoint key values and product-market fit.

The Lean Start Up Movement consists in the most efficient way possible to reduce the risk of failure since it is basically an approach forlaunchingnew products into the market based on hypotheses that must be tested and validated by scientific experimentation. Therefore, testing the products and their vision regularly helps avoid failure.

Founders test their theories by bringing minimal viable products to market and use real customer feedback to validate their hunches. Finally, using market insight and agile development methodologies, founders iterate and pivot their way to nirvana (product-market fit). Eric Ries is best known for his contributions to the third and final phase on his approach to agile methodology. The LS framework is one of the first to offer a clear understanding into successful startup development among investors, academics and entrepreneurs.

The LSM favors experimentation over elaborate planning and customer feedabck over intuition. Its goal is to create an institution, not just a product. Furthermore, the LSM guides the manager through the production process to ensure the products are fulfilling customers' needs, are sustainable, and attract early adopters who eventually become the customers when the products are launched.

= Distinct Differences From Other Offerings =

In the past, all business development concepts were taught in the same dry language-- business plan, expensive product development and aggressive sales. But in the start-up realm, this approach is as effective as speaking French in an English class. The Lean Startup Movement is the rosetta stone to improving the odds of success when developing a start-up business. With the constant experimenting and iterating, founders turn failures into smart pivots that lead to product-market fit - a key metric supporting hypergrowth, steady robust income and future prosperity.

The Lean Startup provides a scientific approach to creating and managing startups and get a desired product to customers' hands faster. The difference between Lean Startup and other movements lies in the fact that this approach eliminated uncertainty, and it lies on the premise of 'Should this product be built?' instead of 'Can this product be built?'.

The Lean Startup Movement is the supporting philosophy of several launch pads, accelerators and incubators found on campuses around the country. Steve Blank has strong academic ties with both Standford and UC Berkeley. Having created the Lean Launchpad, Blank's example has spread to other prominent start-up hotspots such as Launchpad Central and NYU's Summer Launchpad.

= Steps Required To Bring Resource to Campus =

Several prominent companies like Intuit and Dropbox have begun to publicly employ the Lean Startup ideas. These principles are also taught in classes at Harvard Business School and are implemented in municipal governments through Code for America.

[[File:Lean.png|border|left|Lean.png]] The Lean Start Up Movement (LSM) is a paradigm shift in product and business development that was introduced by Steve Blank and further popularized by Eric Ries, the author of the bestselling book,''The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses''. This concept was initially inspired by the Japanese “lean manufacturing” concepts from the 1980s & 1990s where companies would focus on processes that create value - more specifically, features and services that customers are willing to pay for. By utilizing a scientific approach in which minimal viable products are produced, manufactures were able to bring the product to market quickly and iterate based on the feedback received. This is the core of the lean startup movement: rapid prototyping coupled with extensive analysisofcustomer interactions to pinpoint key values and product-market fit.

The Lean Start Up Movement consists in the most efficient way possible to reduce the risk of failure since it is basically an approach forlaunchingnew products into the market based on hypotheses that must be tested and validated by scientific experimentation. Therefore, testing the products their vision regularly helps avoid failure.

The full lean startup methodology has three key phases. Modeled with the business model canvas in mind, the first step begins with using the canvas to map out and organize business hypotheses. Founders test their theories by bringing minimal viable products to market and use real customer feedback to validate their hunches. Finally, using market insight and agile development methodologies, founders iterate and pivot their way to nirvana (product-market fit). Eric Ries is best known for his contributions to the third and final phase on his approach to agile methodology. The LS framework is one of the first to offer a clear understanding into successful startup development among investors, academics and entrepreneurs.

The LSM favors experimentation over elaborate planning and customer feedabck over intuition. Its goal is to create an institution, not just a product.

Her focuses include European Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and Leadership Studies. Noor is originally from Amman, Jordan, where she lived until 2016 when she moved to Elon, North Carolina for college. Elon University's wide network helped Noor meet couple of University Innovation Fellows who encouraged her to apply and become one herself.

At Elon University, Noor is involved with Elon International Society, Model United Nations, and Student Government Organization. In addition, Noor has worked with students as an Orientation Leader and a Teacher Assistant for first years through their transition process to college. Finally, Noor is also a Group Exercise Instructor working with Elon Campus Recreation to help offer a variety of Group Exercise Classes for the student body.

Noor has been able to fulfill her passion for leadership through becoming an Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellow. As a Leadership Fellow, Noor is learning in depth about leadership and working in teams, which is an essential aspect of successful inititatives. Elon currently offers a major and a minor in entrepreneurship through the Doherty center, which prepares students to become entrepreneurs in either for-profit businesses or social businesses. Our promotion of I&E seeks to inspire students to create and change the world around them in a variety of majors, requiring widespread faculty support and appeals to creativity that match all kinds of students.

We do not have sufficient resources to pursue this specific category but have plans to apply the four other categories to our campus. We hope to have the opportunity and resources to incorporate this category down the road. 

== '''Facilitating University - Industry Collaboration''' ==

Elon is located in the Triad and is very close to the Research Triangle. Our Student Professional Development Center works to connect students with businesses in both of these areas. We also have large job and internship fairs that bring in startups and large companies like Deloitte and Oracle. These programs are very common among most schools and we are currently working to expand them. Because of the many other schools in the area with strong research focuses it is difficult to attract larger research projects but there are some smaller companies that we have been able to work with. Our Environmental Department has been involved with doing some really neat testing for products that will be sold to Kobalt and there are many other projects taking place within our other departments. As a Leadership Circle this is an area I think we could improve in. To do this we will need to reach out to many of the local companies to see what types of projects and research they might need validated. Because we are such a small school compared to schools like NC State there are some smaller projects that we could work on that would be very helpful to those businesses. The first step for us will be getting involved with the Chamber of Commerce.

Elon has made a lot of progress in this area and our plans are to continue to make huge leaps and bounds here. The town of Elon and the surrounding area were hit hard when the textile companies left. Over the next 20 years our university has major priorities to help build up the areas around Elon and create an environment that will bring in more business and attract students and faculty. We have also invested in offices in downtown Burlington and Greensboro that are specifically geared toward community engagement, innovation, and entrepreneurship. These efforts are only possible with the support of the entire university so we plan to help out in whatever way we can. Initially it will be important to do surveys and studies on other universities that have accomplished similar goals. One example that we have looked at is Duke University, which has helped transform Durham over the years.
