<div>[[File:NKC UIF photo.JPG]]My name is Nick Capaldini. I am a Product Design student studying at the University of Oregon. I am currently an active member of both Toastmasters International and UO Entrepreneurship Club. Through these associations I gain valuble skills and connections necessary to exicute different forms of innovatiion where they are needed. One such example was in the QuackHack Hackathon where I led a team of five to a third place finish by developing a faster paced strategy game to match the speed expectations of younger generations. In additionton campus experience I am involved in community efforts as well. I have done volunteer work for local entrepreneurial resource Fertilab Thinkubator and R.A.I.N. Eugene.<br />

There are plenty of students interested in exploring their ideas, but very few know where to begin their innovation journey -- that's where we hope to come in with programming to educate about entrepreneurship and the facilities to support new ideas.<br />

Long story short, those students are as good as excluded regardless of the decidedly inclusive pamphlets and course descriptions that are sent out.&nbsp;<br />

Additionally, this space will have ideation laboratories, brainstromming rooms, and a "zen" office (free of any tech) to give students the best chance of success when working on the different aspects of their idea (including coming up with one in the first place).<br />

Last summer, I had two internships at ATDC with start-ups Sytheros and Soneter.</span><br/><br/><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">At the beginning of this school year, I stated taking on more leadership responsibilities by becoming an executive member of En2Em as well as GT-MDEA (where I connected up with the Medicine 2.0 team over at Emory to gain more information on medical emergency services). I am also in the process of bringing Design to America to Georgia Tech.&nbsp;</span><br/><br/><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">I am presently involved in ThinkBig’s Sustainability and Outdoor Leadership Program and on the Sophomore Leadership Council as well.</span><br/><br/><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">This past winter, I was nominated to be a University Innovations Fellow to represent Georgia Tech. After a 6 week instructional course, we attended the Open 2014 conference. The University of Oregon innovation and entrepreneurship landscape canvas has many opportunities. With two very strong programs at the University, Product Design and Entrepreneurship, there is tremedous opportunity for crossover, collaboration and joint innovation. The biggest issue: how to integrate two fairly segregated disciplines. Design students excel in the product creation side, whereas entrepreneurs tend to excel in implementation (at least as observed at U of O). These two disciplines have alot to offer one another; it is just a matter of getting the right people together. Designers need to create a mindset that the design process does not end at final prototyping; it continues into implimentation. Furthermore, business students can learn a lot about the design process, iterative ideation and rapid prototyping. This is my mission as a UIF at the University of Oregon.<br />
