Natalia Suárez is a University Innovation Fellow from Universidad Tecnológica del Uruguay (UTEC) studying Biomedical Engineering. Her research interest includes clinical engineering, neuro-engIeering, tissue engineering, and product design. 

Natalia is originally from Paysandú, Uruguay, where she lived until 2017 when she moved to Fray Bentos, Río Negro to study at Universidad Tecnológica. While she was in high-school studying computer science and information technology she was introduced to divers maker marathons, labs, science fairs and camps that let her build a path through 2 majors; health and technology. She also seeks to improve education, emphasizing mental health, and raising awareness of neurobiological disorders. 

At Universidad Tecnológica, Natalia volunteers at Lab-A ( Open Lab for innovation, development, entrepreneurship and technological research), where she helps at design thinking, 3D printing, and robotics in education workshops as Bits and Bricks program (educational robotics), where she was introduced to the University Innovation Fellows Program. She also enjoys researching open source biomedical equipment, personalized medicine, brain computer interface and tissue engineering. She is currently in a competition about brain-computer interface controlled vehicles. 

From a very young age, Natalia was interested in innovation, technology, and health. This makes her join many extracurricular advanced activities to always keep learning, this taught her that one is never too young to learn. Growing up, she was also involved in music, learning to play piano and guitar, and in sports learning rowing, skating, and taekwondo.

== Peer to peer advising ==

Objective

This project is designed to guide freshmen along their University immersion by forming groups of advanced students who will work together on a specific area of action.

 

Leaders

Milton Lopez and Sebastian Calvermater are going to be in charge of this project.

 

Key aspects

Students and faculty members who volunteer to take part in this project and become students’ advisors must have the ability to empathize with students and have fluent communication skills.

Each volunteer will join a sub-group based on their interests and experience, being passionate and knowledgeable about their area of action.

Each sub-group will have a leader that will respond to Milton and Sebastián. Leaders will give guidance to the members of each group and will be the connection between freshmen and advisors, assigning a mentor according to the student’s needs, holding a well-organized schedule.

Objective

Deepen the sense of unity and belonging to the institution by creating a student ID, and give students even more benefits by attending UTEC.

 

Leaders

Natalia Suarez and Irina Capdevila are going to be in charge of this project.

 

Key aspects

The UTEC ID will be the way of identifying students at campus and control access to the different areas and laboratories.

Benefits of having the ID will be further implemented, a few ideas that have been considered are: access to local public transport and housing, services discounts such as cinema or concert tickets, bookstores, restaurants, coffee shops.

This ID will be more helpful to other parts if our university that share building with other schools or high schools. It will help another problem that we recently detected, people there finds it very hard to tell apart UTEC’s students from other institutions’ students.

= Promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship =

At UTEC, there can be found many workshops focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as undergraduate courses that are focused in science and engineering, the teachers encourage their students to innovate and to have an entrepreneurial perspective when doing the projects.

The principal event of innovation and entrepreneurship is the Innovation Week, that has place in the month of October and gathers companies from public and private sector joining forces alongside local high schools and their students, as well as other higher education institutions and universities, and the special collaboration of the Finnish university JAMK, working all together in order to know new ways of innovation, bring a wide spectrum of careers together to make a project and how far can they go together, instead of each career doing the task separately. And also, this projects have a great impact in the community.

= University-industry collaboration =

One of the characteristics of the university is how it works conjunctively with local and international industries in order to approach new ways of teaching and preparing the students for a more versatile work field vision. As well as improving the industry through new perspectives that brings each generation of students. Always innovating, always improving.

= UTEC in the Territory =

The Regional Technological Institutes (RTIS) are the expression of UTEC in the territory. They are located in different points of the interior of the country, based on the survey of trainging needs in the different regions. They are the poles that manage the activities of the region and act to build a dialogue with the enviroment, through a storng decentralizing vocation.
