Arizona State University recently adopted a set of guiding design aspirations to thrust ASU into the future as a prominent innovation and entrepreneurship institution. These aspirations, in conjunction with programming and new facilities geared to engaged every student more fully in an interconnected community of innovators, are called the New American University at ASU. Highlighting entrepreneurship, ASU has many venture catalyst opportunities including the Edson Ventures program at the Skysong campus, the Fulton Ventures program at the Tempe campus, and several Changemaker Central workspaces and programs across four campuses. Additional programming is added each year to increase ASU's capacity to foster new student startups. In 2012 Skysong's Edson Ventures program accepted 20 student startups. In 2013, Skysong introduced the Great Little Companies Network to more than double the number of startups going through Skysong each year. All of these programs provide financial support, mentorship, and inclusion in a large network of industry partners.

In addition to structured and financially backed venture catalyst programming, ASU offers several majors, minors, certificates and classes on innovation and entrepreneurship throughout all academic disciplines. On the Tempe campus, the most offerings for innovation and entrepreneurship stem from Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and the W.P Carey School of Business. On the Polytechnic campus, the College of Technology and Innovation expands upon and combines similar programming as the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and the the W.P Carey School of Business

Past Edson Ventures student startups include:

G3Box - a company which designs and produces mobile maternity clinics in shipping containers - this project started through a freshman level introduction to Engineering course called Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS).

FlashFood Recovery - An app that allows for the speedy recovery and redistribution of food which would normally go to waste.

== Faculty innovation and entrepreneurship ==

Faculty innovation and entrepreneurship on ASU's Tempe campus is highly encouraged and well supported. Faculty members with experience as successful entrepreneurs are involved with the innovation and entrepreneurial education of students, passing along their skills and insights.

ASU recently received the [http://entrepreneurship.asu.edu/asus-entrepreneurship-and-innovation-group-wins-prestigious-award/ Most Promising Technology Based Economic Initiative] from the State Science and Technology Institute. This recognition focuses on the resources and programming that the [http://entrepreneurship.asu.edu Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group (EIG)] has made available to the ASU community. Through EIG and Arizona Technology Enterprises, ASU offers mentorships, legal council regarding Intellectual Property management, venture catalyst funding (up to $100,000), and grant writing support.

== University technology transfer function ==

== Overview
==

Arizona State University has a slew of impressive innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities with which students may engage themselves. With over 7 majors, across 4 different schools, several certficates, and multiple campuses and satalite research and innovation centers geared towards pushing students towards entrepreneurship, ASU has made it a priority to harness the ideas and talents of its students. The central hub for entrepreneurship at Arizona State University is located online through the [http://entrepreneurship.asu.edu Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development]. This office spans the resources available on the ASU Tempe, Polytechnic, and Skysong campuses (those most involved with entrepreneurship and technological innovation) as well as other satalite research institutions affiliated with ASU. Information contained on this website includes:

*Research at ASU
*Technology transfer services and programs
*The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group
*Additional services and support for student and faculty entrepreneurs

With the new focus of ASU's entrepreneurship programming, the Skysong campus houses the [http://studentventures.asu.edu Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative], a program which produces approximately 20 student-led startups each year. Additional programming, including the Great Little Company Network, have been added to more than double the capacity of Skysong to produce student-led ventures. Skysong is posited as a hub where industry connections, and other ASU networks are leveraged to produce well founded student ventures.

Additionally, new focus is being directed towards increasing makerspace and providing access to advanced tools and resources to facilitate venture and product development. A new and very large project, which is still under construction, is the [http://magazine.asu.edu/december-2012/articles/university-news/asu-chandler-innovation-center-host-techshop Chandler Innovation Center,] based about 40 minutes away from the Tempe campus.

Though there appears to be a wealth of opportunities and resources available to students at ASU, there are some significant limiting factors to the usefulness and effectiveness of these facilities and resources. These limiting factors include:

*Many of the ~80 courses which are geared towards entrepreneurship are upper division classes which require a specific major designation (and are limited to students within to that major) instead of being broadscope and inclusive. The nature of entrepreneurship itself is neglected in this administrative barrier.
*Many students do not have the necessary transportation to reach many of these large - almost superstructure type - facilities which are located very far off an already very large campus.
*Many student ventures are competing for too few spots and available funding. Disenfranchisement of students occurs when there are over 500 startups competing for 50 spots.

The following two strategies will address the physical and psycological barriers which confront students seeking help with their entrepreneurial and innovative ideas. These strategies focuse on the accessibility of resources and how they can be improved to reach more students.

== Strategy #1: Decentralized Access
==

Following are an array of strategies that will fully address Gap #1 over a 2-3 year period:

Tactic #1: Peer-led Makerspace

*Description - A peer lead makerspace on campus which provides students access to design, creation, and prototyping spaces. This space should be large enough to encourage multidisciplinary interaction among all vital parts of a successful student-led startup. The space will be open to all majors, and the allocation of space to different student projects and teams will be decided and facilitated by a student filled board of directors.
*Team Leader:: Mary Wilcox
*Milestones:
**Scout available/vacant or underutilized spaces on campus 11/13
**Request space from current overseer
**Open discourse with Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development 12/13
**Propose plan for space                                                                                           01/14
**Initiate student involvement in beta testing of space 02/14
**Soft launch                                                                                                                 04/14
**Full launch

Tactic #2: Relaxing Administrative Barriers

*Description - Allowing students from one discipline to cross over into entrepreneurship related courses offered by a school that houses different majors is key to unlocking the cross disciplinary discourse necessary to branch out and create new ventures. Perhaps a Graphic Design student with an interest in modeling would like to take a class on engineering entrepreneurship, or a Web Design student is looking for a class to learn skills necessary to partner with other students to create a campus wide network - these students would be better served by having access to entrepreneurship classes in which they will connect with other like-minded students while learning the necessary skills to be successful entrepreneurs.
*Team Leader:: TBD
*Milestones:
**Initiate discourse with Administration regarding I&E courses 12/13 (for 08/14)

Tactic #3: [Name of tactic]

*Description [250 words on why this strategy will solve this gap on your campus]
*Team Leader:: [Either your name, TBD or create a title assigned to the person who volunteers]
*Milestones: [A set of bullets that characterize the work that would likely need to be executed, along with mm/yy]

== Strategy #2: ________
==

== Overview
==

== Overview
==

Mkwilcox:

= Create a new club or organization =

Peer to peer student organizations are powerful tools to connect with like-minded, highly motivated individuals. Student led clubs and organizations are excellent launching points for innovative ideas due to the supportive nature of Universities. Often, universities will have workshops and detailed instructions on how to create a student organization, which makes the process little more than a short to-do list of forms. Jared Karp is a brilliant example of a student generating and leading a peer-to-peer movement by taking adbantage of his university's student organization support structures. Karp was able to found a student organization through his university, University of California, Berkeley, and receive startup funding as a student organization to proliferate his idea of a design and innovation space.

=== Intro  ===

----

Jared Karp, a 4th year mechanical engineering student, founded the [http://dec.berkeley.edu Design Engineering Collaborative] at University of California, Berkeley. The student organization's initial goal was to secure a dedicated design and innovation space, which would provide a learning and collaborative platform for students to participate in innovative design and engineering.

=== Need and Goal ===

----

Jared, after taking a tour of [http://www.ideo.com IDEO], a creative design and innovation consulting firm, personally felt that his engineering program lacked avenues to develop and express creativity. Feeling inspired to merge a highly technical academic environment with a peer led initiative to tap into his university's most creative individuals, he began looking for a physical space to do so.

=== Academic permission  ===

----

With each university having its own rules for student club or organization creation, it is best to do preliminary research on the host university's website. Often, universities appreciate the value in peer-led organizations and will have easy to follow pathways for students with no experience to launch their ideas. Seach university websites for "New student organization," and continue to research the procedures established by that specific university.

In the creation of Karp's organization, he followed the advice above and found that, in order to have Berkeley's support in the pursuit of his vision, he would have to:

*Fill out a few forms
*Find three other dedicated individuals as signatories
*Gain the support of a faculty advisor
*Complete a few workshops

Karp accomplished these tasks by passionately communicating his idea for the student organization and the design space he wanted to facilitate.

=== Support ===

----

For Karp, support came from one quirky and progressive faculty advisor who connected with Jared's idea and an initial group of 9 of Karp's close friends. Karp started his organization by inviting people with whom he already had close relationships. He selected friends who demonstrated reliability and an inclination for the creativity that he wanted to unleash. He spred his organization through these initial 9 members, asking each one to bring one other person to share his idea with. Effectively, Karp doubled and and quadruppled the size of his student organization through this manner.

=== Cost ===

----

In Karp's experience, no startup funding was necessary to found the organization. In founding the organization through his university's channels, Karp was provided access to funding. His initial funding amount was $600.

=== Leadership ===

----

Karp began preparing to transition his organization to it's new leadership well before his expected graduation date. He is currently in his last year at Berkeley, and is confident that DEC will continue under eager and dedicated new leadership. Karp began fostering the new leadership of his organization by encouraging freshman students and mentoring them. He invited younger students who demonstrated an understanding of the organization and a lot of passion to become more involved and to take ownership of the organization. The student whom is most active in the organization and who is set to take over when Karp graduates isn't an engineer - she is passionate about the mission of the Desing Engineering Collaborative.

=== Launch ===

----

Karp insists on "go big" for launching a new student organization. He explains that the way to attract students is with big moves, professional website designs, and a strong leadership team. If an event flops, nothing is lost. If a big event is a success, congratulations.

=== Lessons learned and tips for others ===

----

Karp's advice was to, "never take your foot off the gas," and to embolden yourself to take the first steps. Expressing passion will get other people excited about helping and guiding good ideas.
